MBBS Admission in Russia from Kerala: Step-by-Step Process

Admission to a Russian medical university takes about three to four months from application to arrival, most of it waiting for the invitation and the visa. This guide goes through eligibility, documents and each step for a student applying from Kerala.

In short: qualify NEET, choose an English-medium university, apostille your documents, get the admission letter and the invitation from the university, then the student visa. Most first-year English groups start between September and November.

Russian universities usually admit foreign students on documents, sometimes with an interview or a short test in biology and chemistry. A higher NEET score does not lower the fee, but students with stronger scores tend to cope better with the course and with FMGE. Your NEET score card is checked again when you apply for FMGE, so keep the original and your category certificate safe.

Some agents promise admission "without NEET". A degree obtained that way will not let you practise in India. The NMC also warns that no institution can promise admission outside the prescribed process.

Attestation and apostille from Kerala

India and Russia are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Indian educational documents are legalised for Russia with an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs. Students in Kerala usually go through NORKA Roots, the Kerala government agency that collects documents for state verification and forwards them for the MEA apostille. NORKA's published fee for the apostille itself has been ₹50 per document, plus its own service charges; check the current list on norkaroots.org before you go. Our NORKA attestation guide explains the online booking, documents and fees step by step. Start this as soon as you have the Class 12 certificate, because state verification can take weeks.

Step by step

  1. Shortlist two or three universities

Compare fees, English-medium status and FMGE results. Ask each university in writing whether your group is taught in English for all six years and how the 12-month internship is arranged, as the NMC rules require.

  2. Apply

Send scans of the passport, mark sheets and NEET score card. The university checks them and may hold an online interview or test. If accepted, you receive an admission letter and the contract terms.

  3. Pay the first fee if required

Some universities ask for the first year's or semester's fee before the invitation, others after arrival. Pay only to the university's official bank account and keep the receipt.

  4. Invitation letter

The university applies to the Russian migration authorities for an official study invitation in your name. Expect several weeks. Check that your name and passport number match exactly.

  5. Student visa

With the invitation, passport, application form, photo and medical certificates, apply for the student visa. The Consulate General of Russia in Chennai is the nearest Russian consular office to Kerala; applications in India are also handled through visa centres. Fees and processing times change, so check them on the consulate's or visa centre's website when you apply.

  6. Travel

There is no direct flight from Kerala. Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi to Moscow, then on to the university city. Carry originals of all documents and some cash in roubles or dollars for the first days. The Embassy of India has noted that Russian immigration may carry out extra checks on Indian passport holders, so allow time at the airport.

  7. Arrival and registration

The university registers you with the migration authorities within days of arrival; give them your passport and migration card promptly. A medical check and insurance follow. Your first-year visa is usually converted into a multiple-entry visa for the rest of the year.
