MBBS in Russia for Kerala Students: Universities, Fees and Admission Guide
Six years of General Medicine at a Russian state university costs about ₹2.4 lakh to ₹14.1 lakh a year in tuition. Here you can compare 50 universities by fees, English-medium status and FMGE results, check the NMC rules, and get help applying from Kochi.
Why students from Kerala look at Russia
In 2025, 73,328 candidates from Kerala qualified NEET-UG, while the state's medical colleges had about 5,400 MBBS seats. Government seats go to the top ranks. A self-financing seat costs far more: Kerala Medical College, Palakkad, for example, charges ₹8.1 lakh a year on the general merit quota and ₹22.7 lakh under the NRI quota (see MBBS fees in Kerala vs Russia). Russia is one of the few options where a state university offers a six-year medical degree, in English groups, for a yearly tuition that a middle-class family can plan for, and where the degree can lead to practice in India.

It is not an easy option. The course is six years, far from home, in a cold climate and a different language outside the classroom. To practise in India a graduate must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which about a quarter of Russia graduates pass at each attempt. This site lays out the numbers so that a family can decide with open eyes.
Top medical universities in Russia for Indian students
These ten are among the largest destinations for Indian students or have FMGE results above the Russian average. Fees are the first-year tuition from the university's price list or the official Study in Russia portal, converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. The FMGE figure is the latest NBEMS session with at least 50 candidates, so that small groups do not distort it.

How much MBBS in Russia costs
Tuition at the universities we checked ranges from ₹2.4 lakh to ₹14.1 lakh a year for the first year. Most Russian universities set fees in roubles and raise them each year, so the rupee amount moves with both the fee and the exchange rate. Hostels at state universities are cheap by Indian standards, usually a few thousand roubles a month. Food, winter clothes, medical insurance, the visa and flights from Kerala come on top.
A realistic plan for six years includes tuition, hostel, food and daily costs, insurance, one return flight a year and a reserve for fee increases. The fees page breaks this down university by university.
For Kerala families: banks such as SBI, Federal Bank, South Indian Bank and Canara Bank give study-abroad education loans, though their published schemes rarely name Russia. Ask the bank early: a loan above ₹7.5 lakh needs collateral, and the bank will want the admission letter and fee structure. See the education loan guide.
Is a Russian MBBS valid in India?
Yes, if the course meets the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021. There is no list of "NMC approved" Russian universities; the NMC says it does not endorse any list. What counts is how your own course runs:
- at least 54 months of study, taught in English;
- a 12-month internship in the same university;
- the subjects of the Indian MBBS, including clinical training in person;
- eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia;
- the whole course in one institution, finished within 10 years.
After graduating you pass FMGE (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, but has no date) and do a 12-month supervised internship in India. In Kerala, registration is with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council. The NMC rules page explains each condition and what to ask the university in writing.
English for all six years. Some Russian universities teach clinical years partly in Russian. That can make the degree fail the NMC rule on medium of instruction. Get a written statement that your group is taught in English throughout.
FMGE results of Russian universities
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for each foreign university. In December 2025, 30.9% of Russia graduates passed (2,128 of 6,878); in June 2025, 18.1%. Over 2025 as a whole the figure was 25.8%. Results differ widely between universities. Orenburg State Medical University, Smolensk State Medical University and Privolzhsky Research Medical University have been above the Russian average every year since 2021. Some others have stayed far below it for years.
See every university year by year on the FMGE pass rate page.
Where the universities are
The 50 universities on this site are in 43 cities, from Kaliningrad on the Baltic to Krasnoyarsk in Siberia. Most are in European Russia and along the Volga, within about two hours' flight of Moscow; the Siberian cities are four to five hours away. Moscow and Saint Petersburg cost more to live in; cities such as Kazan, Ufa, Orenburg, Perm or Smolensk have large Indian student groups and lower living costs.

Two things matter for a student from Kerala. Winter: from November to March temperatures stay below zero almost everywhere, and in the Urals and Siberia they can fall below −30 °C. And distance from home: there is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia, so the trip goes through a Gulf hub or Delhi.
Safety. In August 2024 the Embassy of India in Moscow advised Indian nationals in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions, which border Ukraine, to take precautions and temporarily relocate outside them. The Ministry of External Affairs has also repeatedly warned Indians to stay away from any offer to join the Russian armed forces. A student should never accept a job offer from an agent that involves the military. Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before choosing a university near the border.
Eligibility: who can apply
- NEET-UG: you must qualify NEET to study medicine abroad. The result is valid for three years from its declaration. In NEET-UG 2025 the qualifying score was 144 out of 720 for the general category and 113 for SC, ST and OBC candidates.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB for the general category and 40% for reserved categories.
- Age: 17 years on or before 31 December of the admission year. There is no upper age limit.
- Passport: valid for the length of the visa. Apply early if you do not have one.
Russian universities usually admit on documents and an interview or a simple entrance test in biology and chemistry. A higher NEET score does not change the fee, but it does tell you how ready you are for FMGE later.
How admission works, step by step
Shortlist
Choose two or three universities by fee, English-medium status, FMGE results and city.
Apply
Send scanned mark sheets, NEET score card and passport. The university issues an admission letter.
Invitation
The university requests an official invitation from the Russian migration authorities. This takes several weeks.
Visa
With the invitation, apostilled documents and a medical certificate you apply for a student visa.
Travel
Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode through a hub to Moscow and on to the university city. Register with the migration authorities after arrival.
Most English-medium groups start between September and November; North Ossetian State Medical Academy, for example, starts its first-year English group on 1 November. Applications usually open in spring and the invitation-and-visa stage takes several weeks, so families who start after NEET results come out are already in a hurry.

Life in Russia for a student from Kerala
Students usually cook in hostel kitchens, and rice and Indian spices can be bought in large supermarkets and markets. In cities with many Indian students there are student associations, and Malayali students tend to find each other quickly. The hard parts are the first winter, the language outside the classroom and the distance. Students who learn basic Russian in the first year cope better in hospital rotations and in daily life.

The city pages describe climate, food, safety and the route from Kerala for each city with a medical university.

Frequently asked questions
Is MBBS in Russia a good option for students from Kerala?
It can be, for a NEET-qualified student who does not get an affordable seat in India and is ready for six years abroad. Tuition at state universities is about ₹2.4 lakh to ₹14.1 lakh a year. The risks are the FMGE exam, which about a quarter of Russia graduates pass per attempt, the climate and the language outside class. Choose a university with an English-medium programme and good FMGE results.
Is MBBS from Russia valid in India?
Yes, if the course meets the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021: at least 54 months in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, the Indian MBBS subjects and eligibility for a licence in Russia. The graduate must then pass FMGE (later NExT) and do a 12-month internship in India.
How much does it cost to study MBBS in Russia for Indian students?
First-year tuition at the universities we checked is between ₹2.4 lakh and ₹14.1 lakh a year. Add the hostel, food, insurance, visa and flights. Most fees rise every year, so plan with a margin.
Do I need to qualify NEET to study MBBS in Russia?
Yes. Indian citizens must qualify NEET-UG to get a medical degree abroad that counts in India. The result is valid for three years.
Are MBBS classes in Russian universities taught in English?
Many universities have English-medium groups for foreign students, but some switch partly to Russian in the clinical years. The NMC requires the whole course in English, so get a written statement from the university before you apply.
