Top Medical Colleges in Russia for Indian Students: Ranking and Comparison
Every "top 10" list of Russian medical colleges ranks by something. Ours ranks by one number that matters to an Indian student and that anyone can check: how many graduates of each university passed FMGE from 2022 to December 2025, according to the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
How we rank: combined FMGE pass rate of all graduates of a university in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 NBEMS reports and both 2025 sessions. Only universities with at least 300 candidates in that period are ranked, so that a small group cannot top the list by chance. The Russian average over the same period was about 25%.

What the top of the list has in common
Orenburg, Privolzhsky and Smolensk lead the ranking and have been above the Russian average in every NBEMS report since 2021. Orenburg passed 45% of its candidates in December 2025, Smolensk 43%. Smolensk is also one of the largest: more than 2,400 of its graduates sat FMGE in the period, so its result rests on large numbers.

Mordovia, Kazan State Medical, Penza, Mari, Bashkir and Perm follow, all above the Russian average over the period. Mari State University and Perm send some of the largest groups of Indian graduates, with more than 2,500 candidates each.
At the bottom are universities whose graduates pass at half the Russian average or less, year after year. Stavropol, for example, had more than 2,600 candidates in the period and a combined pass rate of 13%. A low fee does not make up for that.
What FMGE results do not show. A pass rate reflects both teaching and the students a university admits, and how many of them prepare seriously. It says nothing about hostels, safety or how the internship is organised. Use the ranking to shortlist, then check each university against the NMC rules.
Universities not in the ranking
Some well-known universities had fewer than 300 FMGE candidates in 2022–2025, too few for a fair rate, so they are not ranked. Sechenov University in Moscow, the oldest medical school in Russia, had about 50 Indian candidates a year, with pass rates between 7% and 30%. Several Siberian universities, such as Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk, do not appear under a recognisable name in the reports. The FMGE pass rate page lists every university year by year, including the small ones.
Government or private?
Almost every university in the ranking is a state university. Russia has very few private medical universities, and those that exist have small numbers of Indian graduates. For an Indian student the question is less "government or private" than "is the whole course in English, does it include the internship, and how do its graduates do in FMGE".
By city and climate
The top of the ranking is mostly in European Russia: Orenburg and Ufa in the southern Urals, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Penza, Saransk and Yoshkar-Ola in the Volga region, Perm in the western Urals, Smolensk west of Moscow. All have cold winters, but none is in Siberia. See the catalogue of all universities for the map.
How to compare medical colleges before applying
Shortlist from the ranking
Pick three or four universities from the top half that fit your budget.
Check the trend
Look at each university's results year by year, not only the total. A falling trend is a warning sign.
Ask about English and the internship
Get it in writing that your group is taught in English for six years and that the 12-month internship is done at the university.
Compare six-year costs
Use the fees page to compare tuition and hostel over the whole course.
Shortlist the top colleges for you
We match the ranking to your NEET score, budget and preferred climate.
Frequently asked questions
Which are the top 10 medical colleges in Russia for Indian students?
By combined FMGE pass rate from 2022 to December 2025, the top universities are Orenburg State Medical University, Privolzhsky Research Medical University, Smolensk State Medical University, Mordovia State University, Kazan State Medical University and Penza State University, followed by Mari, Bashkir, Perm and Ulyanovsk. Are government medical colleges in Russia better than private ones?
Almost all Russian medical universities that teach Indian students are state universities, so the choice rarely arises. What matters is whether the course meets the NMC rules and how the university's graduates perform in FMGE.
How many medical universities in Russia accept Indian students?
About 60 Russian institutes appear in each recent NBEMS FMGE report, which means they have Indian graduates. This site covers the 54 that Indian students choose most often.
Which Russian medical universities have the most students from Kerala?
No official source counts students by Indian state. The largest Indian groups overall, by FMGE candidates, are at universities such as Mari, Perm, Smolensk, Stavropol, Northern State and Volgograd. Ask any university how many Indian students are in your year group.
How should I compare medical colleges in Russia before applying?
Shortlist by FMGE results over several years, check that the course is in English for all six years with the internship at the university, compare the six-year cost, and consider the city and its climate.
