Education Loan for MBBS in Russia: Banks, Interest Rates and Documents
Most Kerala families who send a child to Russia finance part of it with a bank loan. The amount is usually above ₹7.5 lakh, so the loan needs collateral, and interest runs from the first disbursement. This page shows how much to borrow, what the banks publish, and what to ask before you sign.
In short: a loan for six years of MBBS in Russia is almost always above ₹7.5 lakh, so banks ask for collateral, usually a house or land. Repayment starts after the course. Ask the bank in writing whether it accepts your Russian university and whether it can send money to the university's bank in Russia.
How much you need to borrow
First-year tuition at the Russian state universities we checked runs from ₹2.4 lakh to ₹14.1 lakh a year. Over six years that is about ₹14–₹85 lakh in tuition alone at today's fees and exchange rate. Banks usually also finance the hostel, living costs, travel and books, as long as the university's documents show them.
| Cost | Usually covered by a loan? | What the bank wants to see |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, six years | Yes | The university's fee structure for each year |
| Hostel | Yes | The hostel fee in the admission letter or fee structure |
| Living costs | Often, within limits | An estimate from the university or a reasonable budget |
| Flights | Often | A fare estimate or ticket |
| Medical insurance, visa | Sometimes | Receipts or official amounts |
| Agent's service fee | No | Banks pay institutions, not agents |
Fees in Russia are set in roubles or dollars and usually rise every year. A loan sanctioned on the first year's fee may fall short by the fifth. Ask the university for the fee of every year of the course, give that to the bank, and keep a margin of 10–20%.
What banks in Kerala publish
Banks rarely name Russian universities or MBBS on their study-abroad pages. The terms below are what each bank published when we checked in October 2026. Treat them as a starting point and confirm at the branch.
| Bank and scheme | What the bank publishes | Check at the branch |
|---|---|---|
| SBI Global Ed-Vantage | Loans above ₹7.5 lakh up to ₹3 crore for study abroad. Interest 9.40% a year with collateral for general institutions from 9 June 2026, with 0.50% off for girl students. Repayment up to 15 years, starting six months after the course. Processing fee 0.50%, minimum ₹10,000, maximum ₹50,000, plus GST. | The page lists courses in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and a few other countries and does not mention Russia or MBBS. Ask whether your university is accepted, and about SBI's other education loan schemes if it is not. |
| Federal Bank education loan | Up to ₹20 lakh for studies abroad. | Interest rate, margin and collateral for your amount. Rates change with the repo rate. |
| Canara Bank | Its published study-abroad scheme is for Master's degrees at selected universities. | Whether an undergraduate medical course in Russia can be financed under another Canara scheme. |
| South Indian Bank | Offers education loans for study in India and abroad. | Amount, rate and collateral; we could not read the terms on its website. |
| Kerala Gramin Bank | Small education loans; abroad loans are described for postgraduate study. | Whether MBBS abroad is covered at all. |
Rates change. Most education loans are floating and linked to the RBI repo rate or the bank's lending rate. The rate on your sanction letter is the one that counts, and it can move during the loan.

Collateral: when the bank asks for it
Indian banks follow a common pattern for education loans, which Federal Bank, for example, states for its own loans:

- Up to ₹4 lakh: no security beyond the parent as co-borrower.
- ₹4 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh: a third-party guarantee.
- Above ₹7.5 lakh: tangible collateral, usually a house, flat or land, or fixed deposits.
Six years in Russia cost more than ₹7.5 lakh at every university we checked, so in practice the family pledges property. SBI accepts collateral owned by a third party, not only by the parents. SBI's collateral-free loans up to ₹50 lakh are only for selected premier institutions abroad, and Russian universities are not among them.
For Kerala families: if the house or land is the collateral, the bank will ask for the title deed and prior deeds, a recent encumbrance certificate, the possession certificate and location sketch from the village office, and the latest land or building tax receipt. Getting these from the village office and the sub-registrar can take a few weeks, so start in June, not in September.
Margin money
Banks rarely finance 100% of a study-abroad budget. The share the family pays itself is the margin. Federal Bank's terms, for example, ask for no margin up to ₹4 lakh and 15% above it for study abroad. On a ₹30 lakh budget, a 15% margin means ₹4.5 lakh from the family, paid in step with the bank's disbursements.
Moratorium, interest and EMI: an example
Banks let you start repaying after the course. At SBI the EMI starts six months after the course ends. But interest is charged from each disbursement, and during the course it accumulates. Here is an example at SBI's published 9.40% a year, with simple interest during the course as SBI describes:
| Assumption or result | Amount |
|---|---|
| Loan, disbursed in six equal yearly parts | ₹25 lakh |
| Interest accumulated by the end of the six-month moratorium, if not paid | about ₹9.4 lakh |
| EMI over 15 years on ₹34.4 lakh | about ₹35,700 a month |
| EMI over 15 years if the family pays the interest during the course | about ₹26,000 a month |
Paying the interest month by month during the course is the cheapest choice if the family can afford it. The figures are an illustration; the bank calculates your own schedule from the sanctioned amount, the disbursement dates and the rate.
Remember the time line of a foreign medical graduate. After six years in Russia comes FMGE, which many graduates do not pass at the first attempt, and then a 12-month internship in India. Real earnings may start a year or more after graduation, so plan the EMI on the parents' income, not on the graduate's.
Paying a Russian university through an Indian bank
A loan only helps if the money reaches the university. Banks usually send each year's fee directly to the university's account by international transfer, against the fee demand. Payments to Russian banks have become harder since 2022, and some Indian banks restrict them. Before you take the sanction, ask the bank in writing:
- whether it can remit to the university's bank in Russia, and in which currency;
- how long a transfer takes, since universities set deadlines for each year's fee;
- what happens if the university changes its bank details.
Pay only to the university's own account named in the contract and the fee invoice. A bank will not pay tuition into an agent's account, and neither should you.
Documents for the loan application
- Admission letter from the university, and the fee structure for all six years.
- Student's Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET-UG score card.
- Passport, photos, Aadhaar and PAN of the student and of the co-borrower.
- Income proof of the co-borrower: salary slips and Form 16, or income tax returns of the last two or three years for business income; bank statements.
- Collateral documents, if the amount is above ₹7.5 lakh.
- For later disbursements: the visa, proof of enrolment and each year's fee demand from the university.
Step by step
Talk to two banks early
As soon as NEET results are out, visit the branch where the family banks and one other. Take the fee structure of the universities you are considering.
Get an in-principle answer
Ask whether the bank accepts the university and the course, how much it can lend, the rate, the margin and the collateral it needs.
Prepare collateral papers
Start the village office and sub-registrar documents while the admission is in progress.
Apply with the admission letter
The bank sanctions the loan on the admission letter and fee structure. Read the sanction letter for the rate, moratorium and prepayment terms.
First disbursement
The bank pays the first fee to the university, usually after the visa. Keep every receipt and fee demand for the next year's disbursement.
Interest subsidies
There is no central interest subsidy for MBBS in Russia today. The Padho Pardesh scheme, which subsidised interest for minority students abroad, was discontinued from 2022-23 and covered only Master's and doctoral study. The Central Sector Interest Subsidy scheme covers study in India only. Interest on an education loan may also reduce the parents' income tax under the old tax regime; ask a tax adviser how it applies to you.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get an education loan for MBBS in Russia from an Indian bank?
Yes, Indian banks lend for medical study abroad, but their study-abroad pages rarely name Russian universities. Ask the bank in writing whether your university and course are accepted, how much it can lend and whether it can send money to the university's bank in Russia.
Which banks in Kerala give education loans for MBBS abroad?
Families in Kerala usually approach SBI, Federal Bank, South Indian Bank and Canara Bank. SBI's Global Ed-Vantage covers loans above ₹7.5 lakh, and Federal Bank publishes study-abroad loans up to ₹20 lakh. Confirm the terms for Russia at the branch, because the published schemes do not mention it.
Do I need collateral for an MBBS education loan?
Almost always. Banks generally need no security up to ₹4 lakh, a third-party guarantee from ₹4 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh, and collateral such as a house or land above ₹7.5 lakh. Six years of MBBS in Russia cost more than ₹7.5 lakh at every university we checked.
What is the interest rate on an education loan for MBBS abroad?
SBI's Global Ed-Vantage was 9.40% a year with collateral from 9 June 2026, with 0.50% off for girl students. Other banks publish ranges that depend on the amount and collateral. Most rates are floating, so the rate can change during the loan.
