Medical Colleges in Thiruvananthapuram: MBBS Seats, Fees and Last Ranks for 2026
Thiruvananthapuram district has four colleges that award MBBS in the 2026 Kerala counselling: Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, SUT Academy of Medical Sciences, Sree Gokulam Medical College and Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College. This page gives each college's location, 2026-27 seats, the fee from the official order, and the last state-merit rank allotted in the first two 2026 rounds, then says what to do if your rank does not reach any of them.
In short: the four MBBS colleges in Thiruvananthapuram district together have 850 seats in 2026-27: 250 at Government Medical College (tuition ₹23,150 a year), 250 at SUT Academy, 200 at Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI and 150 at Sree Gokulam (general-seat tuition about ₹8.1 to ₹8.6 lakh a year in 2025-26). In round 2 of 2026 the last open state-merit rank allotted was 365 at Government Medical College, 3,694 at Sree Gokulam, 6,414 at Somervell and 7,084 at SUT. Students ranked beyond that in open merit usually look at other districts or at MBBS abroad.

MBBS colleges in Thiruvananthapuram district
People searching for "medical colleges in Thiruvananthapuram" usually mean one of two things: the government college in the city or the private colleges around it. The CEE Kerala prospectus for 2026 lists four MBBS colleges in the district. Three of the four are outside the city limits, in Vattappara, Venjaramoodu and Karakonam, so ask about the daily commute and hostel before you accept a seat.
| College | Place | Type | Seats 2026-27 | Tuition per year | Last SM rank, round 1 | Round 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram | Thiruvananthapuram city | Government | 250 | ₹23,150 | 290 | 365 |
| Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation | Venjaramoodu | Self-financing | 150 | ₹8,10,175 | 3,481 | 3,694 |
| Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College | Karakonam | Self-financing | 200 | ₹8,56,840 | 5,329 | 6,414 |
| SUT Academy of Medical Sciences | Vattappara | Self-financing | 250 | ₹8,15,329 | 6,233 | 7,084 |
The four add up to 850 seats, about 15% of the 5,605 MBBS seats in the 2026 state counselling. The other 4,755 are spread across the remaining thirteen districts, and the full list of medical colleges in Kerala shows them district by district.
Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram
This is the college with the lowest last ranks in the south of the state. Of its 250 seats, 37 are All India Quota seats filled by MCC, according to the prospectus (the figure is marked "subject to change"); the rest are allotted by CEE under the mandatory reservation: 50% state merit, 10% economically weaker sections, 30% backward communities, 10% Scheduled Castes and Tribes. The last open state-merit rank was 290 in round 1 and 365 in round 2, so the seat is realistic only for students with a very high NEET score. A student from a reserved community can get in at a much higher rank number, and the CEE last-rank table gives the community-wise figures. Tuition is ₹23,150 a year under the government order of 19 April 2023, with a caution deposit, miscellaneous fee and van fee making ₹28,950; hostel is extra. Since July 2026 tuition is charged for 54 months only.
Sree Gokulam Medical College, Venjaramoodu
Sree Gokulam is the self-financing college in the district with the lowest rank requirement and the lowest published fee: ₹8,10,175 a year for general seats in 2025-26, and ₹22,74,006 for NRI seats, under the 2025 government order. Of its 150 seats in 2026-27, 104 are government seats under reservation norms, 23 are NRI seats and 23 are seats open irrespective of domicile. The last open state-merit rank was 3,481 in round 1 and 3,694 in round 2. Over 4.5 years the general-seat tuition comes to about ₹36.5 lakh, the lowest of any college whose fee is in the 2025 order.
Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakonam
Somervell was approved for 200 seats for 2026-27 after 50 seats were added in September 2026 (G.O.(Ms) No. 265/2026). The matrix reserves 100 seats as community seats, 30 for NRI candidates, 30 as seats open irrespective of domicile and 40 as government seats under the reservation norms. That means an open-category student competes for far fewer than 200 seats. The 2025-26 fee is ₹8,56,840 a year for general seats and ₹22,74,006 for NRI seats. Round 2 closed at state rank 6,414 (5,329 in round 1), and the community quota has its own cut-offs in the CEE table.
SUT Academy of Medical Sciences, Vattappara
SUT has the largest intake of the three private colleges, 250 seats, of which 174 are government seats under the reservation norms, 38 are NRI seats and 38 are seats open irrespective of domicile. Its fee was fixed separately from the other colleges. By an order of 4 June 2026 the Fee Regulatory Committee allowed a 5% rise on the 2024-25 fee and fixed 2025-26 tuition at ₹8,15,329 for general seats and ₹22,74,006 for NRI seats, with a special fee of ₹81,841 in the first year and ₹59,200 in later years. The college published the order on its own website. If you are offered a seat, ask for the special fee and any hostel charges in writing, because they come on top of tuition. Round 2 closed at state rank 7,084 (6,233 in round 1).

What your rank means for these four colleges
| Your open-category state rank | What the 2026 round-2 tables suggest |
|---|---|
| Up to about 365 | Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram was reached in round 2; also the other government colleges (Kozhikode went to about 205, Kottayam to about 542). |
| About 365 to 3,700 | Sree Gokulam; elsewhere in Kerala also Jubilee, Amala, Malankara, Pushpagiri, Believers and MES. |
| About 3,700 to 6,400 | Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI, Travancore (Kollam), KMCT and Malabar (Kozhikode). |
| About 6,400 to 7,100 | SUT Academy. |
| Beyond about 7,100 | None of the four Thiruvananthapuram colleges had open-merit seats left in round 2. Colleges elsewhere still had seats: Sree Narayana Institute (Chalakka) to 7,375, Azeezia to 8,375 and Al-Azhar, Karuna, Mount Zion, P K Das and PIMS to between 8,900 and 10,800. |
These bands use the open state-merit column. A student applying under a community reservation, as a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe candidate, or under the economically weaker section quota should read the other columns in the CEE table, because those categories close at larger rank numbers.
Hospitals and colleges that are often confused with MBBS colleges
Many searches for medical colleges in Thiruvananthapuram are really about hospitals: Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), for example, draws tens of thousands of searches a month, but it does not appear among the MBBS colleges in the 2026 CEE list. The SAT Hospital is the teaching hospital attached to the Government Medical College. The district also has a Government Dental College (50 BDS seats), and the private dental colleges at Vattappara, Neyyattinkara and Varkala, which do not offer MBBS. If you are looking for an MBBS seat, the four colleges above are the complete list for this district in 2026.
Fees: what a family in Thiruvananthapuram should budget
For a government seat, tuition and the other annual charges come to ₹28,950 a year, so about ₹1.3 lakh in fees over the 4.5 years of study, plus hostel and food. For a general seat at Sree Gokulam, Somervell or SUT, the tuition alone is about ₹36.5 to ₹38.6 lakh over 4.5 years at the 2025-26 rate, plus special fee and hostel. The fee for the 2026-27 intake has not yet been refixed; the Government of Kerala ordered on 17 July 2026 that all colleges charge for the 54 months of study only, and the Fee Regulatory Committee has to set the new amounts. So ask the college for the total in writing before you pay the first instalment.
The comparison of MBBS fees in Kerala and Russia sets these totals beside the official fees of Russian state universities. At the 2025-26 rate a self-financing general seat is about ₹36 to ₹42 lakh in tuition across Kerala, and the Russian tuition for six years at universities outside Moscow is usually lower, before living costs and flights.
If your rank is beyond these colleges
Three choices remain. You can wait for the stray-vacancy round, which fills seats left after round 3, and consider repeating NEET if the score was close. You can look at a seat in a government or private college outside the district, using the Kerala colleges table. Or you can apply for MBBS abroad, which needs only the NEET qualifying score (213 out of 720 for the general category in 2026, 144 in 2025), but ends in the FMGE exam, which about one in four Russian graduates passed over 2022 to 2025.
A Thiruvananthapuram family can do most of the Russian application from home. The Thiruvananthapuram NORKA Roots regional centre at Thycaud authenticates educational certificates for the apostille (phone 0471 2329950), and the NORKA attestation guide explains the steps. Thiruvananthapuram airport has no direct flight to Russia; students normally fly through a Gulf hub or through Delhi. We counsel Thiruvananthapuram families by phone, WhatsApp and video in Malayalam, and the consultancy page for the city, MBBS abroad consultants in Trivandrum, explains how a visit to our Kakkanad office in Kochi works.
