Medical Courses After 12th Without NEET (and Why MBBS Abroad Without NEET Does Not Work)

There is no way to become an MBBS doctor in India without NEET, and MBBS abroad without NEET does not give an Indian licence either. But many health careers open after Class 12 without NEET: nursing in Kerala, laboratory technology, optometry, physiotherapy, pharmacy and others. This guide lists what we could verify, what each leads to, and where NEET is still compulsory.

In short: NEET is compulsory for MBBS, BDS and the AYUSH degrees in India, and since 2018 for any Indian student who wants an MBBS from abroad to be valid in India. Courses that do not need NEET in Kerala include B.Sc. Nursing and the allied health degrees filled by the LBS Centre on Plus Two marks, and B.Pharm through the KEAM rank, though rules differ by state and year. For 2026, LBS notified nursing and allied health admission on 23 June, and its allotments were still running in October. Check the prospectus for each course.

Is MBBS possible without NEET?

No. In India, admission to MBBS, in a government or private college, comes only through NEET-UG ranks. This applies to Kerala's government and self-financing seats, to the all-India quota and to deemed universities. A student who did not qualify cannot be offered a legal MBBS seat anywhere in India.

The question usually means: can I do MBBS abroad without NEET? A foreign university may admit you without it, and some do; agents advertise "MBBS abroad without NEET". But for an Indian citizen the degree then cannot be used to practise in India.

  • The rule. The Medical Council of India's public notice of 8 March 2018 made NEET mandatory for Indians seeking a primary medical qualification abroad, and the NEET result replaced the eligibility certificate. The NMC, which succeeded the MCI, applies the same condition. The Supreme Court has upheld the requirement.
  • Checked again at FMGE. The NBEMS information bulletin for the October 2026 FMGE asks candidates whose admission was on or after May 2018 to upload the NEET-UG scorecard in place of the eligibility certificate. It also asks for proof that the student met the age and Class 12 marks conditions at the time of joining.
  • The result. Without NEET you cannot take FMGE, cannot do the internship in India and cannot register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council, so the six years abroad do not lead to a licence here.

This is the single most important point on this page, and it is where agents mislead families. We explain the NMC rules in detail on the NMC rules page.

What "without NEET" can honestly mean

Many students who ask this question mean "without a high NEET score". That is a different matter. To study MBBS abroad you need only to qualify NEET, that is, to reach the qualifying percentile. In 2026 that was 213 out of 720 for general candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (see NEET result 2026 and your options). There is no rank cut-off for a university in Russia. If your score is above the line, you do not need a high rank. If it is below it, you have not qualified, and neither India nor a foreign university can fix that for an Indian licence.

Health courses after 12th that do not need NEET in Kerala

Kerala's LBS Centre for Science and Technology runs a centralised allotment for nursing and allied health science courses, and CEE Kerala runs the KEAM allotment for pharmacy. The table shows what we could confirm. Where a source is from an earlier year, we say so.

Sources: LBS Centre (lbscentre.kerala.gov.in and lbscentre.in) notices for 2026 and 2025, including "Admission to Nursing and Allied Health Sciences 2026"; Careers360 on LBS B.Sc. Nursing 2026; Onmanorama reports on earlier LBS paramedical admissions (2020–2023, no entrance test, Plus Two marks); Careers360 and Free Press Journal on the KEAM 2026 pharmacy rank list. We could not open the 2026 LBS prospectus, so the course list and the subject requirements for allied health courses come from earlier cycles and must be checked.

Every one of these courses ends in a registration or a licence of its own, not the doctor's registration. In India the allied health professions are regulated by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, set up by an Act of 2021, and the nursing profession by the nursing council.

Is NEET required for B.Sc. Nursing in Kerala?

This is the question families ask most, because the answer differs by state. In Kerala, the LBS Centre notified "Admission to Nursing and Allied Health Sciences 2026" on 23 June 2026 and an updated prospectus on 7 July 2026, following the allied health commission's guidelines. Careers360's page on LBS B.Sc. Nursing 2026 says the rank list is prepared from the Plus Two marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and does not mention NEET. Two other pages we read gave conflicting statements about whether an entrance test is used, and a 2025 source claimed a NEET basis, which looks wrong. So our reading is: not NEET for the LBS allotment, but read the prospectus.

The same is not true elsewhere. The Director General of Medical Education and Research, Haryana, has announced that NEET-UG will be mandatory for B.Sc. Nursing from 2026-27. A Tamil Nadu college says NEET is compulsory there from 2025-26, which we could not confirm from the regulator. The Indian Army's nursing course is selected on NEET scores. If a child may study nursing outside Kerala, ask that state's admission notice.

The LBS page still showed live activity in October: a seventh allotment dated 14 October 2026, fee payment until 15 October, college joining by 16 October, and a cut-off date for all courses of 31 October 2026. A student who has not found a place should check the LBS site at once; the final rounds and the stray rounds often decide the last seats.

Courses that still need NEET

  • MBBS and BDS, in government, private and deemed colleges.
  • The AYUSH degrees such as BAMS and BHMS, which Kerala fills from the NEET rank through the same CEE counselling.
  • B.Sc. Nursing in some states and at some central institutions, as above.
  • MBBS abroad that you intend to use in India, as explained above.

How to choose when you did not qualify NEET

  1. Be clear about the goal

If the goal is to become a doctor who can prescribe and practise independently in India, NEET is the only door. If the goal is to work in healthcare, there are many other doors.

  2. Weigh a repeat year

A repeat year makes sense only if the gap to the qualifying score is small and the student can prepare well. NEET-UG 2027 dates were not announced when we looked.

  3. Check each course's own entry rule

Use the LBS and CEE prospectuses for Kerala and the state notice elsewhere. Do not rely on a college's brochure.

  4. Check recognition

Ask whether the college is recognised by the nursing council or the allied health commission and affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences, and whether the course leads to registration.

  5. Keep the abroad option honest

If the student qualified NEET but has a low rank, MBBS abroad remains open. If the student did not qualify, it does not.

What if you qualified NEET but your rank is low?

Then you have more options than the courses above, because you can use the NEET score. See the table of options by score on our NEET 2026 page, the Kerala phases on the KEAM allotment page and the fees of the Russian universities on the fees page. The next step after Russia, FMGE, is explained on the FMGE pass rate page.

Beware of anyone who says that a Russian or any other foreign university can "arrange" an Indian licence without NEET. An Indian licence follows the NMC rules, and the rules ask for NEET at admission. If a consultant makes that promise, ask for it in writing and for the NMC document that supports it.

Medical Courses Without NEET: Frequently Asked Questions

Which medical courses can I do after 12th without NEET?

In Kerala, the LBS Centre fills B.Sc. Nursing and allied health degrees such as MLT, optometry, radiology, perfusion and physiotherapy on Plus Two marks in earlier cycles, and B.Pharm goes through the KEAM rank. None of these makes you an MBBS doctor. Check the 2026 prospectus for the exact courses.

Can I do MBBS abroad without NEET?

A foreign university may admit you, but an Indian citizen needs NEET qualification to make the degree valid in India. Without it you cannot take FMGE or register as a doctor here. NEET is checked again at FMGE, where the scorecard replaces the old eligibility certificate.

Is NEET compulsory for B.Sc. Nursing in Kerala?

The sources we read say LBS Kerala ranks B.Sc. Nursing candidates on their Plus Two marks, not on NEET. Haryana has made NEET mandatory from 2026-27, and some colleges in other states and central institutions use it. Confirm in the LBS prospectus.

Is a B.Sc. Nursing degree without NEET valid?

It is valid if the college is recognised by the nursing council and the course follows its rules, and the graduate registers as a nurse. Ask for the college's recognition and university affiliation in writing.

What are the NEET qualifying marks for MBBS abroad?

In 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC. Class 12 PCB marks of 50% (40% for reserved categories) and age 17 are also required. Anything above the line works for admission abroad.

Can I become a doctor in India through a course that does not need NEET?

No. The licence to practise modern medicine in India comes from an MBBS qualified through NEET, or from an MBBS abroad that meets the NMC rules, followed by FMGE and the internship in India. Allied health and nursing degrees lead to their own professions.
