MBBS in Russia Eligibility and Age Limit for Indian Students

To study MBBS in Russia and practise in India you need four things: a qualifying NEET-UG score, at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12 (40% for reserved categories), age 17 completed by 31 December of the admission year, and a valid passport. There is no upper age limit. This post explains each rule, who checks it and what happens if you miss one.

In short: the MBBS age limit for Indian students going to Russia is a minimum of 17 years completed on or before 31 December of the year of admission; for admission in 2026 that means born on or before 31 December 2009. There is no upper age limit and no limit on NEET attempts. You also need a qualifying NEET-UG score (valid three years), Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories). NBEMS checks the age and marks proof again when you apply for FMGE, so a shortfall found late can cost you the licence.

Some sources give 45% in PCB for general PwBD candidates; confirm for your own category.

The marks rule is on Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together, not on each subject. If you did Class 12 in the Kerala Higher Secondary board, the CBSE or the ISC, work out the percentage from your mark sheet, and keep a copy of the calculation with the original certificates.

MBBS age limit: minimum 17, no maximum

The age rule in NEET and in the NMC's rules for foreign graduates is a minimum. A candidate must complete 17 years on or before 31 December of the year in which they join. For admission in 2026 that means born on or before 31 December 2009; for 2027, on or before 31 December 2010. NEET has no upper age limit, so a candidate in their twenties or thirties who passes NEET and has the Class 12 marks is eligible to apply for MBBS abroad.

Two points are easy to miss. First, the age rule is checked against the date on which you joined the course, not the date on which you apply. A student born on 5 January 2010 is 16 on 31 December 2026 and does not meet the rule for a 2026 joining. Second, we found no maximum age for foreign students in Russian university rules, but a university can still decline an applicant for other reasons. If you are above 25, ask the university in writing whether it has any internal limit, and check how the medical fitness and visa rules apply.

Why Class 12 marks and age matter again at FMGE

Many students think that eligibility is only a matter between them and the university. It is not. When a graduate applies for FMGE, the NBEMS bulletin of October 2026 asks for proof of the following:

  • the NEET-UG score card, for candidates who joined the course on or after May 2018;
  • proof that the candidate met the age criterion of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 1997 at the time of joining;
  • proof that the candidate had the minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with the relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates;
  • the caste certificate, if a relaxation is claimed.

So a student who joins a Russian university with 48% in PCB, or who was a few months short of 17 on 31 December, may complete six years and still find that the application for FMGE is refused. Agents who say "no age limit, no marks limit for Russia" are describing the university's willingness to admit you, not India's rules. Our NMC rules page explains the other conditions that a Russian course must meet.

Questions parents ask about eligibility

My child turns 17 on 5 January 2027. Can he join in autumn 2026?

No. He is 16 on 31 December 2026, and the rule is on completed years on that date. The practical choice is to wait for the next admission cycle and use the year to improve the NEET score or prepare for the Russian language.

Does a gap year after Class 12 matter?

We found no rule in the NMC or NEET conditions against a gap year. The NEET result is valid for three years, which is why many students use a repeat year to improve their score and then apply. The university may ask for an explanation of the gap. Ask it directly.

What if the student is under 18 when joining?

The academic rules are the same. If the student is under 18 when joining, ask the university what consent from parents it needs, whether the student must have a local guardian and where the hostel is. Get the answers in writing before you pay.

Which Class 12 certificates are accepted?

Universities ask for the Class 12 certificate and mark sheet, with an apostille for Russia. For Kerala, attestation goes through NORKA Roots; see the NORKA attestation guide and the admission page for the full document list.

Eligibility checklist before you apply

  1. NEET score card

    Check that it is for a year within the three-year validity and that your name and date of birth match the passport. See the NEET cut-off for MBBS in Russia post.

  2. PCB marks

    Calculate the percentage. If it is near 50% (or 40% for reserved categories), speak to the university before applying and keep the exact calculation.

  3. Date of birth

    Count 17 years to 31 December of the joining year.

  4. Medium of instruction

    Ask for a written statement that your group is taught in English for all six years, which is also an NMC condition.

  5. Duration and fees

MBBS Age Limit and Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the age limit for MBBS in Russia?

The minimum age is 17 years completed on or before 31 December of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit in the NEET rules. For admission in 2026, the student must be born on or before 31 December 2009.

What is the eligibility for MBBS in Russia for Indian students?

A qualifying NEET-UG score, Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories), age 17 by 31 December and a valid passport. The university may also ask for an interview or a short test.

Can I study MBBS in Russia after a gap year?

Yes. We found no NMC or NEET rule against a gap year. A NEET result stays valid for three years from the date of declaration. Ask the university whether it wants a statement about the gap.

Is there an upper age limit for MBBS abroad?

The NEET rules have no upper age limit, and we found none in the NMC rules for foreign graduates. Check the individual university and the Russian visa rules in your case.

What happens if I did not have 50% in PCB in Class 12?

You do not meet the NMC's minimum marks rule, and NBEMS asks for proof of the marks when you apply for FMGE. A Russian university may admit you, but the degree may then not lead to a licence in India. Candidates in reserved categories need 40%.
