How Many Years Is MBBS in Russia? Course Duration and Internship

MBBS in Russia takes six years of full-time study, 72 months, with the clinical internship required by the NMC included in those years. To practise in India you then pass FMGE and do a 12-month internship, so a student who joins in autumn 2027 would normally be a registered doctor in India around 2035. This post shows the whole timeline, the NMC minimums and what can make it longer.

In short: the Russian General Medicine course (specialty 31.05.01) is 6 years, 72 months, 360 credits. The NMC requires at least 54 months of study in English plus, in addition to those 54 months, a 12-month internship at the same university: 66 months in all, which the Russian six years (72 months) must cover. After that the Indian steps are FMGE and a 12-month supervised internship in India. Counting a normal gap for FMGE preparation, plan 7 to 8 years from joining to full registration. The Indian MBBS is 4.5 years plus a one-year internship, so 5.5 years.

How long is the MBBS course in Russia?

The standard length of the Russian medical degree is six years. The federal standard for specialty 31.05.01, "General Medicine", sets a nominal duration of six years of full-time study and 360 credits (zachetnye edinitsy). Every university we cover follows it. The qualification awarded is "General Practitioner" (Russian "vrach-lechebnik") in the specialist degree. Our MBBS full form post explains how this degree maps to MBBS.

The six years are not the same as the "5 years plus 1 year internship" that some brochures use. For India, what matters is the total on the diploma and the transcript: six years, with at least 54 months of study and, on top of that, 12 months of internship at the same university. If a university tells you that your internship will be done elsewhere, say, in India or in another country, the degree will not meet the NMC rule.

What the NMC says about duration

Rule (FMGL 2021)Minimum
Course of study54 months, in English
Internship abroad12 months, in addition to the 54 months, in the same institution that awards the degree
TotalAt least 66 months; the Russian six years (72 months) cover it
Time limitThe whole course must be completed within 10 years of joining
Internship in IndiaAt least 12 months of supervised internship after the screening test
Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, Regulation 4 and Schedule I, as set out in the NMC FAQ of 2026 (nmc.org.in). The gazette text is legally authoritative.

The 10-year limit is the one most students forget. If a student fails a year and repeats it, or takes academic leave, the clock keeps running. The NMC FAQ of 8 June 2026 adds that graduates admitted abroad after 2019 must clear the foreign graduate exam within 10 years of admission. See the full list of conditions on the NMC rules page.

A normal Russian academic year

Russian universities teach in two semesters a year, and the academic year normally begins in September. As an example, the RUDN University calendar for the 2026 intake allocates 52 weeks to each of the six years, 33 to 35 weeks of teaching, 3 to 5 weeks of exam sessions and 7 or 8 weeks of holiday a year in years 1–5 (2 in winter and 5 or 6 in summer), and 10 weeks of holiday in year 6. Over the whole course that is 203 weeks of study and practice, 25 weeks of exams and 22 weeks of production practice in hospitals, plus 2 weeks for the state examination. This is one university's plan, so ask for yours.

Many Kerala students go home only in the summer break, because the winter break is short. Put at least one return flight a year in the family budget. The fees page and the cost of living section of each city page help with that.

MBBS in Russia timeline: from joining to registration

This is an example for a student who joins a Russian university in the autumn of 2027, qualifies in NEET before that and passes FMGE on the first attempt. It is an estimate, not a promise.

What can make it longer

  • A failed year. Russian universities repeat subjects. A student who fails an exam repeatedly can be asked to repeat the year, depending on the university's rules.
  • FMGE attempts. About one in four Russian graduates passed FMGE in 2022–2025. Many need more than one attempt, and each failed session costs months. Preparing from the third year is the best way to avoid it. See FMGE pass rate by university.
  • The licence in Russia. The NMC requires that the graduate is eligible for a licence to practise in the country of study. In Russia, graduates of medical programmes go through a state accreditation of specialists. Ask the university how foreign graduates complete this step and how long it takes.
  • Documents. Delays in attestation or in the internship papers can add months. The NMC internship rules post explains what the Indian council asks for.

MBBS in Russia vs India: duration compared

An Indian MBBS student spends 4.5 years in the course and one year in the compulsory rotating internship, and can be registered after 5.5 years. A student from Russia needs one more year of study abroad, then FMGE preparation, then a year of internship in India. The gap is two to three years. Whether that is worth the fee difference is the subject of our MBBS in Russia vs India post. The time also counts in money: Kerala government has ordered that tuition in Kerala medical colleges be charged only for the 54 months of study, not for the internship year (G.O. of 17 July 2026), while a Russian student pays tuition for all six years.
