Medical Colleges in Wayanad: MBBS Seats, Fees and Last Ranks for 2026
Wayanad district has two MBBS colleges in the 2026 Kerala counselling: the new Government Medical College, Wayanad at Mananthavady and the private Dr. Moopen's Medical College at Meppadi, which many people still search for as DM WIMS. This page gives each college's status, seats, fee, last ranks in the first two 2026 rounds and hospital base, then compares both with MBBS in Russia for a family that lives in Wayanad.
In short: Wayanad has two MBBS colleges. Government Medical College, Wayanad (Mananthavady) took its first batch in October 2025, has 50 seats and charges ₹23,150 a year in tuition. Dr. Moopen's Medical College, Meppadi (formerly DM WIMS) is a self-financing college with 150 seats in the CEE prospectus and a 2025-26 general-seat tuition of ₹9,31,118 a year. In round 2 of 2026 its last open state-merit rank was 9,813. The government college showed no open state-merit allotment in the first two rounds; its seats went to community and EWS candidates at ranks between 947 and 18,338.

MBBS colleges in Wayanad district
People searching for "medical colleges in Wayanad" usually want one of two things: a government seat at a low fee, or the private college near Meppadi. The CEE Kerala prospectus for KEAM 2026 lists exactly two MBBS colleges in the district. Wayanad has no railway line and no airport, so families should check the distance to the college and the hostel before they accept a seat; the section on Russia below explains how students travel.
| College | Place | Type | Seats 2026-27 | Tuition per year | Last SM rank, round 1 | Round 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Government Medical College, Wayanad | Mananthavady | Government | 50 | ₹23,150 | – | – |
| Dr. Moopen's Medical College (formerly DM WIMS) | Meppadi | Self-financing | 150 | ₹9,31,118 | 7,738 | 9,813 |
Some websites list Dr. Moopen's with 250 seats for 2026. The CEE prospectus and the NMC list for 2025-26 show 150. Our Kerala colleges table and one secondary report mention a later order of 4 September 2026 that added 100 seats; we have not seen that order, so ask CEE or the college for the final matrix before you plan around 250.
Government Medical College, Wayanad (Mananthavady)
Status. This is the newest government medical college in Kerala. The NMC gave permission for 50 MBBS seats in early September 2025 (the Health Minister announced it on 2 September 2025), and the NMC's seat list shows the college as established in 2025 with 50 seats for 2025-26 and none before. The college is affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences. The first batch started online classes on 3 October 2025 and was inaugurated on 18 October 2025, when Kerala became the first state with a government medical college in every district, according to the Health Minister. In the first batch 7 of the 50 seats were All India Quota seats and 43 were Kerala seats; 41 students had joined by mid-October 2025.
Hospital and staff. The teaching hospital is the former district hospital at Mananthavady, upgraded to a medical college hospital in 2021. Onmanorama's report of the Health Minister's announcement on 2 September 2025 lists 140 posts created (115 teaching, 25 non-teaching), a ₹45 crore multipurpose block, a ₹8.23 crore cath lab where angioplasty has begun, a ₹70 lakh skill lab, a paediatric ICU and a sickle cell unit. We found no published bed count, so ask the college for the number of teaching beds and the departments running.
Risks to know. The permanent campus is not settled. The land first identified near Kalpetta was dropped as ecologically fragile, and a plan for 28 acres at Ambukuthi near Mananthavady failed when the Forest Department opposed the transfer. On 3 July 2026 the Health Minister said the biggest obstacle was land, and a news report of the same day quoted a warning that delays in infrastructure could jeopardise the college's recognition next year. The seats of a new college are permitted year by year, so a parent should ask whether the second batch has been permitted before paying anything. The boys' hostel was still being prepared in October 2025.
Fee and ranks. Tuition is ₹23,150 a year under the government order of 19 April 2023, with a caution deposit, miscellaneous fee and van fee making ₹28,950 in total; hostel is extra. Since July 2026 tuition is charged for 54 months only. The table below shows how the college filled in 2026. The state-merit column is empty in both rounds; the allotment shown for the government college is in the community, SC, ST and EWS columns. Beside it are the figures for Dr. Moopen's, described below:
| Category | Government Wayanad, round 1 | Round 2 | Dr. Moopen's, round 1 | Round 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State merit (SM) | – | – | 7,738 | 9,813 |
| Ezhava | 1,460 | 1,660 | 8,878 | 11,142 |
| Muslim | 947 | 1,030 | 8,703 | 11,023 |
| Other Backward Hindu | 2,166 | 2,296 | 8,358 | 10,258 |
| Latin Catholic and Anglo-Indian | 2,807 | 3,537 | 11,467 | 13,078 |
| Dheevara | 5,504 | 5,504 | 8,605 | 10,834 |
| Viswakarma | 1,933 | 1,933 | 11,867 | 13,064 |
| Other Backward Christian | 3,193 | 3,193 | 10,724 | 10,724 |
| Scheduled Caste | 11,283 | 11,518 | 13,607 | 14,593 |
| Scheduled Tribe | 17,263 | 18,338 | 20,550 | 21,445 |
| Economically weaker section | 2,745 | 3,256 | 17,268 | 23,339 |
Read the government column first. Even in the community columns the college closed at low rank numbers: 1,030 for Muslim and 1,660 for Ezhava candidates in round 2, far below the private college. A Scheduled Tribe candidate reached rank 18,338 in round 2. In the 2025 third-phase table the last ranks for this college were 2,353 (Ezhava), 2,388 (Muslim), 15,494 (Scheduled Caste) and 25,421 (Scheduled Tribe), so the numbers move from year to year and last year's rank is only a guide.
Dr. Moopen's Medical College (DM WIMS), Meppadi
Name. The college was set up as DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (DM WIMS) and now uses the name Dr. Moopen's Medical College; its own website still labels the menu "Dr. Moopen's Medical College (DMWIMS)" and the old dmwims.com address forwards to drmoopensmc.ac.in. The CEE prospectus and the NMC list use "Dr. Moopen's Medical College". The address is Naseera Nagar, Meppadi P.O., Wayanad 673577, phone 04936 287000.
Seats. The NMC's seat list shows the college as established in 2013 and approved for 150 MBBS seats in each of the years 2021-22 to 2025-26. The prospectus for 2026 also lists 150, and the college's own chairman's message mentions an intake of 150 students. The college is affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences, like all MBBS colleges in the state.
Fee. The 2025-26 general-seat tuition is ₹9,31,118 a year (the highest among the self-financing colleges in our Kerala table), and the NRI-seat tuition is ₹22,74,006 a year. Over the 4.5 years of study the general-seat tuition comes to about ₹41.9 lakh and the NRI-seat tuition to about ₹1.02 crore. The 2026-27 fee has not yet been refixed: the Government of Kerala ordered on 17 July 2026 that colleges charge for the 54 months of study only, and the Fee Regulatory Committee has to set the new amounts. Ask the college for the special fee, the hostel and mess charges and the total in writing before you pay the first instalment.
Ranks. In 2026 the last open state-merit rank allotted was 7,738 in round 1 and 9,813 in round 2; in the 2025 third-phase table it was 8,599. For the NRI quota, the CEE table showed 30,844 in round 2 of 2026. The table above shows community and EWS candidates reaching 13,000 or more in some columns, so check your own column on the CEE page rather than the SM figure.
Hospital. The college has its own teaching hospital in Meppadi. College listing sites give 710 beds, but we found no official figure, so ask for the NMC-reported bed count. Ask where the hospital refers complex cases. Dr. Moopen's College of Pharmacy, Wayanad, also appears in the KEAM 2026 prospectus, with 100 B.Pharm seats.

Which Wayanad college can your rank reach?
| Your open-category state rank | What the 2026 round-2 tables suggest |
|---|---|
| Up to about 3,600 | Colleges elsewhere in Kerala were reached, for example MES, Perinthalmanna (last rank 3,648 in round 2); a Wayanad college is then a choice of location, not of need. |
| About 3,600 to 9,800 | Dr. Moopen's, Meppadi was reached by open-category students up to rank 9,813 in round 2. KMCT in Kozhikode closed at 5,930 and Malabar Medical College at 5,546. |
| Beyond about 9,800 | No open-category seat at Dr. Moopen's in round 2. Check your community, SC, ST or EWS column, and the stray-vacancy round. |
If your rank falls outside both Wayanad colleges, the Kerala counselling still has seats in other districts at higher rank numbers, so read the Kerala colleges list and our note on KEAM allotment versus MBBS abroad before you decide.
MBBS in Russia for a Wayanad family: cost and travel
For most families in Wayanad the question is not whether to prefer Russia to a government seat. A government seat at ₹23,150 a year is far cheaper than anything abroad. The question is what to do if the rank does not reach the government college and the private fee is ₹41.9 lakh in tuition alone. Here the figures stand side by side.
| Option | Tuition per year | Tuition for the course | Other costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government Medical College, Wayanad | ₹23,150 | about ₹1.3 lakh with other annual charges over 4.5 years | Hostel and food |
| Dr. Moopen's, general seat (2025-26) | ₹9,31,118 | about ₹41.9 lakh over 4.5 years | Special fee, hostel, food |
| Dr. Moopen's, NRI seat (2025-26) | ₹22,74,006 | about ₹1.02 crore over 4.5 years | Special fee, hostel, food |
| Russian state university, official price list | ₹2.4 lakh to ₹14.1 lakh first year (median ₹4.4 lakh) | about ₹14 lakh over six years at the lowest fees, if the price does not rise | Hostel, food, visa, flights; ₹28 lakh or more all-in at the lowest fees |
Russia costs less in tuition, but it brings costs and risks that Kerala does not. The graduate must pass the FMGE in India: about one in four candidates from Russian universities passed in 2022 to 2025 combined, with yearly results between 18% and 31%. The student then does a 12-month internship, lives abroad for six years and learns Russian for the wards; see MBBS fees in Kerala versus Russia for the full workings. A NEET qualifying mark is required (213 out of 720 for the general category in 2026, 144 in 2025), not a rank.
Travel from Wayanad. Wayanad has no airport. The nearest are Kozhikode (Karipur, CCJ) and Kannur (CNN); travel guides give 74 to 106 km by road from Wayanad to Karipur depending on the town, over the Thamarassery ghat road, and Kannur is the shorter drive from Mananthavady, so check on a map. No Kerala airport has a direct flight to Russia. From Karipur students fly through a Gulf hub (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Doha) to Moscow, a one-stop trip of about 13 to 17 hours, or fly to Delhi and take an Aeroflot nonstop to Moscow, about 6 hours 10 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes. Fares are highest in July to September, so book after the university confirms the arrival date.
Documents. A Russian university needs your Class 10 and Class 12 certificates apostilled, and the first step is NORKA Roots. The Kozhikode regional office on Link Road serves Wayanad (phone 0495 2304882 and 0495 2304885); our NORKA attestation guide explains the steps. We counsel Wayanad families by phone, WhatsApp and video call in Malayalam from our only office in Kakkanad, Kochi; the page for MBBS abroad consultants in Calicut shows how a visit works, and the education loan page explains bank finance for a Russian seat.
