Best Medical Universities in the World: QS and THE 2026 Rankings, and What They Mean for Indian Students

Harvard leads the QS table for Medicine and Oxford leads the Times Higher Education table, but neither tells you where an Indian student with a NEET score can study and practise in India. This page gives the 2026 top 10 from both rankings, shows where Russian medical universities stand with their real FMGE results, and explains which numbers decide the choice.

In short: in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (Medicine) the top five are Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Johns Hopkins and Cambridge; in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 table for Clinical, pre-clinical and health they are Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Imperial College London and, tied, Johns Hopkins and Stanford. India's best in QS is AIIMS at joint 105th. Sechenov University, the best-placed Russian medical university, is in the 201–250 band in QS and 601–800 in THE. Rankings measure research and reputation. For an Indian graduate, the NMC rules and the university's FMGE record matter more.

Top 10 medical universities: QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026

QS ranked 847 institutions for Medicine in its 2026 subject edition. It scores five indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, the H-index of the faculty's research and international research network. Harvard has a perfect score in four of the five.

Eight universities appear in both top 10 lists: Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial and Yale. The two rankings disagree on the rest because they weigh reputation and teaching differently, so a student who quotes only one list is quoting a choice, not a fact. Other medical schools often asked about by Indian families: Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is 18th in QS and 29th in THE; the University of Pennsylvania is 14th in QS and 11th in THE; the National University of Singapore is 17th in QS and 13th in THE.

Where Indian medical institutions stand

For readers who ask for the "best medical college in the world" from Kerala, the Indian entries are also useful. In QS Medicine 2026 the highest Indian institution is the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at joint 105th. Manipal Academy of Higher Education is in the 201–250 band, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh in 251–300, and the University of Delhi and Banaras Hindu University in 351–400. In the THE table the Central University of Punjab and the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences are in the 251–300 band. Different institutions take part in different rankings, so the lists are not interchangeable.

Where Russian medical universities stand

Few Russian universities appear in either top table, and none appears in the top 200. Here is how those that Indian students choose fare, next to their FMGE results from the NBEMS report for 2025 (June and December added).

Lomonosov Moscow State University (QS 351–400, THE 301–400), Kazan Federal University (QS 651–700, THE 601–800) and Pavlov University in St Petersburg (QS 551–600) also appear. The pattern in the table is clear: the university with the best world rank among Indian students' choices, Sechenov, had a 13.6% pass rate in 2025, below the Russian average of 25.8%. The three universities with the best pass rates among the large groups (Orenburg, Mordovia, Smolensk) are not in either world ranking at all. Sechenov's fees are among the highest in Russia; the lower pass rate and smaller group should be read with care, but the point stands: a world rank tells you nothing about how well a university prepares its Indian students for FMGE. For our own ranking see top medical colleges in Russia by FMGE results, and for the individual pages Sechenov, Orenburg and Kazan State Medical University.

What rankings mean for an Indian student

They measure research and reputation

The QS indicators (reputation among academics and employers, citations, H-index and international research links) and the THE pillars (teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook) describe the whole university, mostly its research. They do not measure how a course taught to a group of Indian students in English prepares them for an Indian licensing exam.

The NMC decides whether the degree works in India

A foreign degree counts in India only if the course meets the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English plus a 12-month internship at the same university (in addition to the 54 months), a licence to practise in the country of study, one institution for the whole course and completion within 10 years. A top-10 name that cannot show these gives a degree that does not lead to FMGE; a modest university that shows them does. The rules are on our NMC rules page.

FMGE results are the number to check

FMGE is the exam every foreign graduate must pass before the Indian internship. Russia's graduates passed at 25.8% in 2025; Georgia 30.3%, Kazakhstan 24.5%, Uzbekistan 37.9% (NBEMS, June and December sessions). Results vary more between universities than between countries, as the table above shows. The FMGE pass rate page lists every Russian university we cover.

Where a ranking can matter

For a later research position, a fellowship or a postgraduate course abroad, the name of a highly ranked university can help, but that comes after the licence. If your NEET score gives you a seat in Kerala, a Kerala government college is a better deal than any foreign option for most families; compare it on the Kerala vs Russia page. If you are looking abroad, start with MBBS abroad for Kerala students, and read the fee side in MBBS in Russia fees.

Best Medical Universities in the World: Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best medical university in the world?

It depends on the ranking. Harvard is first in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Medicine; Oxford is first in the THE 2026 table for Clinical, pre-clinical and health. Eight universities appear in both top 10 lists.

What are the top 10 medical colleges in the world in 2026?

QS Medicine 2026: Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College London, UCSF, Yale and Karolinska Institutet. THE Clinical and health 2026: Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Imperial, Johns Hopkins and Stanford (tied 5th), Yale, UCL, Toronto and Berkeley.

Which Indian medical college is the highest ranked in the world?

In QS Medicine 2026 the All India Institute of Medical Sciences is the highest Indian institution, at joint 105th. In the THE table the Central University of Punjab and Saveetha Institute are in the 251–300 band. Not every Indian institution takes part in every ranking.

Where does Sechenov University rank?

Sechenov is in the 201–250 band in QS Medicine 2026 and the 601–800 band in the THE 2026 table. It had 59 candidates in the 2025 FMGE sessions and a pass rate of 13.6%, below the Russian average of 25.8%.

Does a higher world rank mean a better FMGE result?

No. Among Russian universities, the two best-ranked groups in our table passed at 13.6% and 40.0%, while three unranked universities passed at 35.5% to 38.5% in groups of several hundred. Check the NBEMS pass rate of the specific university.

Is a degree from a top-ranked foreign university valid in India?

Only if the course meets the NMC FMGL rules, and the graduate then passes FMGE and completes the Indian internship. Ranking plays no part in the NMC's conditions.
