Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Sechenov University (I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University) is a long-established public medical university in Moscow, founded in 1758, and it appears in the QS World University Rankings at 851-900 in 2026. It is also expensive: its 2025/26 price list gives 1,250,000 roubles (about ₹14.2 lakh) for the first year and 9,377,000 roubles (about ₹1.06 crore) for six years. Here are the fees year by year, the hostel, and its FMGE results, which have been below the Russian average in most sessions.

In short: Sechenov University is a public medical university in Moscow founded in 1758. The official price list for 2025/26 gives 1,250,000 roubles (about ₹14.2 lakh) for the first year, rising to 1,756,000 in year six, 9,377,000 roubles (about ₹1.06 crore) in total. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at about 21.5% (49 of 228), below the Russian average of about 25%. The university lists General Medicine among its English-taught programmes, but the price list does not say whether its fee is for the English or the Russian track, so ask.

Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, called Sechenov University, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University or, without full stops, IM Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (MSMU), is a federal state autonomous institution of higher education: a public university under the Ministry of Health. It was founded in 1758. From 1990 to 2010 it was called the Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov, which is why many older pages still use that name. The main address is Trubetskaya street 8, building 2, Moscow. Teaching buildings and clinics are spread across Moscow, so ask the university which buildings your classes and hostel will be in.

The university's English admissions page lists General Medicine (Specialist, Medical doctor) as a six-year, full-time programme under "English-taught Programs 2025/2026". The QS 2025 profile shows 4,083 international students out of 16,365. We found no published number of students from India or from Kerala. The sections below cover the fees, hostel, the QS ranking and the FMGE record, and where the page cannot answer because the university does not say.

Is Sechenov University the same as the Moscow Medical Academy?

Yes. Agents and older websites call it "Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy", "I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical University" or "the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov". They all mean this university in Moscow. Do not confuse it with other Moscow universities that take Indian students, such as RUDN University and Pirogov Medical University, which have different fees and their own pages on this site.

Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University fees for Indian students

The university publishes its tuition in roubles in an order of 30 May 2025 (No. 0840/R) on the price of study for foreign citizens enrolled in the first year in 2025/2026. For General Medicine (31.05.01) the order gives 1,250,000 roubles for the first year and a higher figure for each later year. The official price list is a scanned image. It is the list for all foreign first-year students and it does not itself label the English and Russian tracks, though the English programme page points to the same fee page. So the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University fees below are the official figures for General Medicine, but we cannot confirm from the document that they are the English-medium fees. Ask the admissions office to name, in writing, the fee for your group.

Sechenov University fee structure 2025-26

Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year)INR
Tuition, 6 years (university list for this intake)₹106.1 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

Unlike most universities, Sechenov publishes the fee for every year of the course for the students it enrols, and the fee rises each year:

Year of studyRoublesIn rupees (approx.)
Year 11,250,000₹14.2 lakh
Year 21,500,000₹17.0 lakh
Year 31,560,000₹17.7 lakh
Year 41,623,000₹18.4 lakh
Year 51,688,000₹19.1 lakh
Year 61,756,000₹19.9 lakh
Total, six years9,377,000₹1.06 crore
Tuition for students enrolled in 2025/26, at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 (1 rouble = ₹1.132). Hostel, food, insurance, visa and flights are extra.

So the total MBBS fee at Sechenov for Indian students on this list is about ₹1.06 crore over six years in tuition alone. Plan with a reserve of 10–20% for the rouble-rupee rate and for any change in the 2026/27 list, which we have not seen. The list is for students enrolled in 2025/26. Ask for the list that applies to your intake year and for the contract's rule on whether the fee is fixed in roubles for all six years.

An earlier price sheet on the university's site, for 2022/23, gave 698,000 roubles for the first year of English-taught General Medicine and 4,753,000 roubles for six years. That sheet also listed a cheaper "blended learning" variant. We could not verify whether that variant still exists. The first-year fee in the current list is about 80% higher than the 2022/23 figure, so ask directly what the current options are, and what is the difference between them.

Compare Sechenov with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. Its tuition is much higher than at most state medical universities outside Moscow; Bashkir State Medical University, for example, charges about ₹5.5 lakh a year.

Living cost in Moscow

Moscow is the most expensive Russian city for a student. A student's monthly budget is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, the metro and other local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. We have no verified monthly figure, so we give none. Ask senior Indian students at Sechenov what they actually spend, with and without a hostel place.

Sechenov University hostel and hostel fees

The university's page on dormitories for foreign citizens gives the following. Rooms are corridor-type or blocks. A place costs 7,500 roubles a month in a corridor room and 8,500 roubles a month in a renovated corridor or block room, which is about ₹8,500 to ₹9,600 a month at today's rate. The page also mentions a deposit of five months. We read this page in an archived copy from March 2025, and it covers one dormitory, on Tashkentskaya street. It is based on a rector's order of 31 August 2020. Check that it is still valid and what the deposit is exactly.

The important point is availability. The same page says that in 2021 only students funded by the state quota were housed in university dormitories and that other foreign students may get places if any are available. So a hostel place is not certain. Ask the international office, in writing, whether a place is offered to you in the first year, how much it costs, how many students share a room, and how far the dormitory is from your classes. If there is no place, ask for help with a private flat and its typical rent in Moscow.

Families also ask about a girls hostel at Sechenov University and its fees. We found no separate fee or building for women. Ask how female students are placed, whether rooms are shared by gender, and what security there is at the entrance.

NEET cut-off and eligibility for Sechenov University

Sechenov does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. For NEET-UG 2026 (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026, with the result on 16 July 2026) the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC; in 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

One detail needs care. The university's admissions information says that an entrance exam in Russian is required for undergraduate programmes even on the English route, and that Russian is needed for daily life. We have not seen the exam format, and it is different from the biology test or interview that some other universities use for English-medium applicants. Ask Sechenov what the entrance exam is for an Indian applicant to the English route, in which language it is set, when and where it is held, and whether there is a sample paper. We have no published acceptance rate. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

Sechenov University ranking: QS world ranking and recognition

Families search for the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University world ranking and the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy world ranking. QS World University Rankings 2026 lists Sechenov University in the 851–900 band. We found no other international ranking we could verify. It is a ranking of whole universities, and it says little about the quality of a six-year MBBS programme for an Indian student. We have not checked other rankings. Three things matter more:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask Sechenov for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. We could not query the WDOMS, because its search page was behind a bot check. Check the listing yourself.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

On English-medium study: the official English admissions page lists General Medicine under English-taught programmes for 2025/2026, six years, full-time. It notes that some other programmes are taught in Russian. Because the price list does not label the language and the entrance exam is in Russian, ask for a letter saying that all six years, including hospital rotations, are taught in English.

Sechenov University FMGE passing percentage

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. Sechenov graduates did better than the Russian average only in the first two years of the table. In 2022, 30.2% passed (16 of 53) against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 21.0% (13 of 62) against 19.4%. Then the results fell below the average: 22.2% in 2024 (12 of 54) against 29.5%; 7.4% in June 2025 (2 of 27) against 18.1%; and 18.8% in December 2025 (6 of 32) against 30.9%. The earlier years were weaker still, 6.7% in 2020 and 4.5% in 2021.

2022531630.2%
20212214.5%
20203026.7%
Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

Adding the four years gives 49 passes from 228 candidates, about 21.5%, against about 25% for all Russian universities combined. Sechenov had fewer than 300 candidates in 2022–2025, so it is not in our ranking. The numbers do not explain why. A university with a high fee and a famous name does not automatically produce better FMGE results, so do not treat the price or the QS band as a promise of a pass. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare Sechenov with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.

Safety in Moscow for Indian students

Moscow is the capital and a very large city with a metro system, many universities and the Indian Embassy. The Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions should take precautions and relocate temporarily; Moscow was not in that advisory. We know of no published incident report about Sechenov University or its Indian students, and we have not researched crime statistics. Russia is at war with Ukraine, so conditions can change. What we suggest for any family:

  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel and again before each return after holidays.
  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone.
  • Ask Sechenov what security the dormitory has: guards, entry control and cameras.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Moscow for Kerala students

Moscow is the largest city in Russia, with the most flights, the best transport and the highest costs. Time is two and a half hours behind India. Winter is long and cold, with snow, and a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear are essential in the first year. We found no published number of students from India or Kerala at Sechenov. Moscow has Indian restaurants and Indian grocery shops, though most students cook in the dormitory to save money. Before you pay a fee, ask the university or your counsellor to put you in touch with two or three current Indian students, and ask them about the hostel, food, the cost of a flat and the Russian language.

Illustration: Moscow is large, well connected and costly; ask senior students about real monthly spending.

Language needs attention. The university's FAQ says Russian is needed for daily life, and clinical training in the senior years means talking to Russian-speaking patients. Students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better.

Moscow: 0 km from Moscow in a straight line; local time is 2.5 h behind India.

Sechenov University is in Moscow itself, so the distance to Moscow is zero: you arrive in the city where you will study. Moscow has three main international airports, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, and the transfer to the university or the hostel is by taxi, train or metro depending on the airport. Ask the international office whether it can arrange a pick-up.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi. Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. See the universities page for the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no Sechenov scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. On the dormitory page, quota-funded foreigners were the ones housed in 2021. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask Sechenov for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. This page covers General Medicine only. The university has other programmes, and some of them are taught in Russian, according to its admissions page. Ask which clinical bases your group will use.

Sechenov University compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting Sechenov usually compare it with the other Moscow universities and with a lower-cost option. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Sechenov UniversityMoscow₹14.2 lakh21.5% (49 of 228, not ranked)
RUDN UniversityMoscow₹11.4 lakhnot ranked (under 300 candidates)
Pirogov Russian National Research Medical UniversityMoscow₹11.3 lakhnot ranked (under 300 candidates)
Bashkir State Medical UniversityUfa₹5.5 lakh27.9%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Sechenov's figure is the first year of the 2025/26 list. The Sechenov rate is our own sum of the NBEMS figures.

The first-year fee at Sechenov is about ₹2.8–2.9 lakh a year higher than at RUDN and Pirogov, and about ₹8.7 lakh higher than at Bashkir, while Bashkir's combined FMGE rate is higher. The fee at Sechenov buys a famous name and a Moscow location, and its QS band, but not a better FMGE record. For families who need Moscow, compare all three Moscow universities on the written contract. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

Sechenov awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. With a six-year tuition of about ₹1.06 crore, a family should also compare the cost with Kerala college fees and with the lower fees in other Russian cities before deciding.
