Its graduates passed FMGE at 16.2% over 2022–2025, below the Russian average, on small numbers.

In short: Kuban State Medical University is a state medical university in Krasnodar, southern Russia, whose history goes back to 1920. Its 2025/26 price order gives 482,000 roubles (about ₹5.5 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine for foreign citizens in English, much more than the 275,000 roubles it quoted for a bilingual group a year earlier. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 16.2% of 210 candidates, below the Russian average of about 25%. The university describes its English route as "elements of the English language", so ask what that means for all six years.

Kuban State Medical University (KubSMU, in Russian КубГМУ) is the main medical school of the Kuban, the Krasnodar region in the south of Russia. Its own history says a state university with a medical faculty opened in 1920, the faculty became the independent Kuban Medical Institute in 1921, the institute became a medical academy in 1994 and was accredited as a university in 2005. It celebrated its centenary in 2020. It is a public institution under the Russian Ministry of Health, not a private college, and it has its own clinic, a simulation centre and about 200 clinical bases in the city and the region, according to its presentation.

The university is also searched as "Krasnodar Medical University", "Krasnodar State Medical University" and "Kuban University". All of these lead to the same institution on Mitrofana Sedina Street in Krasnodar. In its 2023 English presentation it says 8,367 students of all forms study there, of whom 763 are international students and residents from 54 countries; 505 foreign students were on General Medicine. It does not give a figure for students from India, so we do not quote one, and we cannot tell you how large the Indian or Malayali group is.

Kuban State Medical University fees for Indian students

KubSMU publishes its fees as orders on the "Paid educational services" page of its disclosure site. Order No. 253-F of 14 May 2025, in force from 1 September 2025, sets the 2025/26 price in a table with a column for each course. For specialty 31.05.01 General Medicine the table has three lines: 350,000 roubles for the first year for Russian citizens, 415,000 for foreign citizens, and 482,000 for "foreign citizens, English". For a new Indian student on the English track the line that matters is 482,000 roubles a year. We read this order from an archive copy of the university's page taken on 17 July 2025, because the site could not be opened from our location; the 2026/27 order was not available to us.

The jump deserves a question. In its English presentation (2023/24 intake, "tuition fees to date") KubSMU quoted 275,000 roubles a year for the bilingual General Medicine group and 230,000 for the Russian-language group. The 2025/26 order lists 482,000 for new English-track entrants. We cannot tell whether that is a price rise, a change of programme or both. Ask the international department which group you would join, what it costs for all six years, and whether the price is fixed in the contract.

KubSMU fee structure 2026-27

Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year)INR
Tuition, 6 years₹32.7 lakh
Hostel, 6 years₹1.0 lakh
Tuition and hostel, 6 years₹33.7 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

In rupees, the Kuban State Medical University fee works out to about ₹5.5 lakh a year in tuition at today's exchange rate, or about ₹32.7 lakh over six years if the first-year price stayed flat; with the hostel from the presentation it is about ₹33.7 lakh. That table multiplies the first-year price by six, so it is an upper estimate. The same order lists lower prices for students who joined in earlier years: 287,300, 272,900, 271,800, 257,400 and 244,400 roubles for courses 2 to 6 on the English line. These are prices for older cohorts, not a plan for a new student, so do not add them up. The figures above are for 2025/26; we could not confirm the 2026/27 price, so treat ₹5.5 lakh as the latest official figure, not a final one. Plan for a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate.

Compare KubSMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At about ₹5.5 lakh it is in the same band as Kazan State Medical and Bashkir State Medical, and well above the universities at ₹2–3 lakh. Next to Kerala it is cheaper: the Kerala self-financing MBBS fee is about ₹8.1 lakh a year. Our Kerala versus Russia fee comparison has the detail.

Living cost in Krasnodar

Beyond tuition and hostel, a monthly budget in Krasnodar covers food, a mobile plan, local transport, study material and clothes. Krasnodar is a city of about 1.1 million people and is cheaper than Moscow, though dearer than smaller university towns. We have no verified monthly figure, so ask senior students at KubSMU what they spend before you fix the family budget. See also cost of living in Russia.

Hostel and hostel fees at Kuban State Medical University

This is the part of the university's own material that is clearest. The 2023 presentation says the university has four student hostels for 1,977 people and that all foreign students live in two of them: Hostel No. 1 on Kolkhoznaya Street 82 (464 places, corridor type, with the washrooms in the corridor) and Hostel No. 4 on 40 let Pobedy Street 85/1 (512 places, sectional type, with the washroom shared by a section). Rooms hold two or three people, and foreign students live together with Russian students. The hostels have kitchens, dining rooms, laundry and ironing rooms and self-study classes, and every foreign student is given a place on a priority basis.

The same presentation gives the cost of living in a hostel as 14,000 roubles a year, about ₹15,800. That is a low figure and it is from a 2023/24 document, so ask for the current rate, the deposit and what it includes. Families often ask about the girls hostel at Kuban State Medical University and its fees. The university does not describe separate girls' buildings; ask how rooms are allocated, whether girls are placed together, and what security there is at the entrance. After the February 2026 attack on students in a residence in Ufa, this is a fair question to put to any Russian university.

NEET cut-off and eligibility

KubSMU does not publish a NEET cut-off of its own above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE or practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC; in 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113. The 3 May 2026 exam was cancelled after a paper leak and held again on 21 June 2026, with the result on 16 July 2026.
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

The presentation says that for the bilingual group the internal exam is an online test, with documents accepted until the start of October and lessons starting on 1 November (the 2024 dates). The Russian-language group has an oral interview in chemistry, biology and Russian instead. Check the dates for your own intake. There is no published acceptance rate. Students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later, so a student with a weak NEET score should think hard about that exam. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at Kuban State Medical University

  1. Apply to the international department

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international department, directly or through us. Ask which group (bilingual or other) your application is for.

  2. Entrance test and contract

The university runs an internal online test for the bilingual group and then issues the contract. Read it for the fee for all six years, the language of instruction and the internship.

  3. Invitation and visa

The university requests your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Krasnodar

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Krasnodar or by train. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.

Students who need Russian first can join the preparatory department for foreigners, which runs for 11 months with elements of English. Apply soon after the NEET result, because documents, apostille and the visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail, and our student visa guide covers the visa.

Ranking and recognition

Families search for the Kuban State Medical University ranking in Russia and its world ranking. The university says in its presentation that in 2023 it headed the rating of the Southern Federal District; that is its own claim and we have not checked the underlying table. English Wikipedia lists Webometrics and uniRank positions in the 6,000s without a year, which say little about medicine. For an Indian student three things matter more than a rank:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask KubSMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. We did not check the WDOMS listing for KubSMU. Look it up yourself.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

FMGE passing percentage of Kuban State Medical University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. KubSMU graduates have been below the Russian average in most reports, on small numbers of candidates. In 2022, none of 42 passed, against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, none of 32, against 19.4%; in 2024, 15.4% (8 of 52) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 11.1% passed against 18.1%. In December 2025 the result rose to 40.4%, 23 of 57 candidates, above the Russian 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, KubSMU passed 16.2% of 210 candidates. KubSMU is not ranked among the 24 universities in our ranking: with fewer than 300 candidates in 2022–2025 there are too few for a fair rate. The figure is still below the Russian average of about 25%.

Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. With only 27 to 57 candidates a session, one batch can swing the percentage a lot, so do not read the December 2025 figure as a trend. NBEMS lists the university as "Kuban State Medical University" and, once in 2020, as "Kuban Medical Institute". Compare KubSMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page, and read how FMGE works.

Safety in Krasnodar for Indian students

Krasnodar is in southern Russia, about 1,200 km from Moscow in a straight line, on the Kuban River. It is not one of the regions (Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk) for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised precautions in August 2024. But the south of Russia is closer to the war than the Volga region: airports at Rostov and elsewhere have been closed since 24 February 2022, and Krasnodar's own airport reopened only on 11 September 2025, with daytime-only limits and frequent restrictions. We found no report of an incident involving Indian students at KubSMU. That is not a promise of safety. What we suggest for any family considering Krasnodar:

  • Ask the university what security the two foreign-student hostels have: guards, entry control, cameras, rules for visitors.
  • Check before each flight whether Krasnodar airport is open, and have a rail option for the trip home.
  • Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival; check the advisory at mea.gov.in before travel.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Krasnodar for Kerala students

Krasnodar is the largest city of the Kuban, with 1,099,344 people at the 2021 census, and is often called the capital of southern Russia. The climate is far milder than the north: the mean temperature is about 0.8 °C in January and about 24.9 °C in July, and the university says there are more than 200 sunny days a year. Winters are still cold enough for a proper jacket, and summers are hot, which Kerala students usually handle well.

The university's presentation lists a student leisure centre, a theatre studio, sports events, an international club with more than 150 members, a psychological support centre and mentors among senior students who speak English. Mentors help first-years with registration and daily life. We do not have verified details on Indian groceries or the Malayali community in Krasnodar, so ask the international department for contacts of senior Indian students.

Where KubSMU is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala

Kuban State Medical University is in central Krasnodar, at Mitrofana Sedina Street 4. The distance from Krasnodar to Moscow is about 1,200 km in a straight line; the university itself says 1,300 km south of Moscow, and it is 120 km from the Black Sea. The nearest airport is Krasnodar International Airport (Pashkovsky), which reopened on 11 September 2025 with restrictions; check whether it is operating before you book, and keep a train as the alternative.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight or a train to Krasnodar. Krasnodar keeps Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India, so calls home are easy. For the wider picture see the universities page and the cities list.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no KubSMU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee. See MBBS in Russia scholarships.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask KubSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. Besides six-year General Medicine, the university teaches dentistry and pharmacy (five years each) and residency programmes; we only cover General Medicine here.

KubSMU compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting KubSMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Kuban State Medical UniversityKrasnodar₹5.5 lakh16.2% (210 candidates)
Kazan State Medical UniversityKazan₹5.4 lakh30.5%
Bashkir State Medical UniversityUfa₹5.5 lakh27.9%
Privolzhsky Research Medical UniversityNizhny Novgorod₹5.3 lakh36.9%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 from each university's own price page; the intake year differs (Kuban: 2025/26, Kazan: page labelled 2023-24). Confirm current fees with each university.

At a similar fee, Kazan, Bashkir and Privolzhsky have had clearly better FMGE results than KubSMU, and those three have far more candidates, so their percentages are steadier. KubSMU's attractions are Krasnodar's mild climate and the clarity of its hostel arrangements. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

KubSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet). See FMGE versus NExT.
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Plan for a year or more between the KubSMU diploma and the first salary in India. What happens after MBBS in Russia explains the steps. With a 16.2% combined pass rate, a student should plan the FMGE preparation from the third year.
