Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PRMU, also called PIMU) in Nizhny Novgorod has one of the strongest FMGE records among Russian universities: 36.9% of 667 candidates passed in 2022–2025, second in our list. The admissions page lists English-language General Medicine at 470,100 roubles for the first year, about ₹5.3 lakh. Fees, hostel, entrance test and admission are explained below.
In short: Privolzhsky Research Medical University is a public research university in Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga, with roots in a medical faculty founded in 1920. Its admissions page lists first-year tuition for English-language General Medicine at 470,100 roubles (about ₹5.3 lakh); no price order for 2026-27 could be read, and the student office says fees were changed for 2026-27. In 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 36.9% of 667 candidates, second among Russian universities in our list and well above the Russian average of about 25%. English medium is stated, but ask for the language plan of the clinical years in writing.

Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PRMU, in Russian PIMU) is a federal state budgetary institution of higher education under the Russian Ministry of Health, so it is a public university with the research status in its name. Its history goes back to a medical faculty founded in 1920 at what is now Nizhny Novgorod State University; Russian Wikipedia gives 20 March 1920. It then became the Nizhegorodsky Medical Institute (1930), the Gorky Medical Institute (1932, named after S.M. Kirov from 1940), the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (from 15 June 1994), and received its present name on 8 February 2018. Many Indian students therefore still know it as Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy.
The legal address is Minin and Pozharsky Square 10/1, Nizhny Novgorod 603005. The university's English pages for foreign applicants are at pimunn.ru/en/admissions/foreign-applicants/, and the admissions email we found is [email protected]. We could not open the site directly from our side and read it through search excerpts, so check the fee table on the live site. The university says it offers full medical specialist programmes in English, including General Medicine. It has not published a count of Indian students.

Privolzhsky Research Medical University fees for Indian students
The Privolzhsky Research Medical University tuition fees are set in roubles. The admissions page for General Medicine (pimunn.ru/priem-na-pervyy-kurs/General-medicine/) has a fee table for foreign citizens from far abroad: 439,400 roubles a year for Russian-language study and 470,100 roubles for English-language study in the first year. Russian citizens pay 351,500 roubles for the 2026 intake on the same site. The snippet we read does not label the academic year, and the student office says tuition was changed for 2026-27 through additional agreements.
We also looked for the formal price order. The university's "paid education" page lists only old orders from 2024, and we found no 2025-26 or 2026-27 price order for foreigners. So the 470,100 figure comes from the admissions table, not from an order, and you should ask the university for the current price order or the contract appendix in writing. Other figures exist, but they are less reliable: the Study in Russia portal lists English-taught General Medicine at USD 4,929 and a second option at USD 5,465 (period not stated), and a QS page lists 400,000 roubles. Indian consultancies quote about USD 5,500 for the first year. Treat the university's own table as the base and the others as signs that the number is near ₹5 lakh.
Privolzhsky University fee structure 2026-27
This is the Privolzhsky Research Medical University fees structure as far as the sources allow: one tuition line per language and per year, with no published path for years 2–6.
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹31.9 lakh |
At today's exchange rate 470,100 roubles is about ₹5.3 lakh a year, which would be about ₹32 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. Russian universities usually raise prices, so keep a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate. The university also runs a foundation (preparatory) course at 160,000 roubles for nine months from 1 September 2026, with a hostel place for full-time students; a new MBBS student with a good NEET score does not usually need it, but ask if the English entrance test is a problem.
| Cost item | What we know for Privolzhsky University |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year, English | 470,100 RUB (admissions page; no price order found) |
| Tuition, first year, Russian | 439,400 RUB (admissions page) |
| Hostel | Not found for degree students; ask the international office |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; usually arranged through the university |
| Food | Most students cook in hostel kitchens; Nizhny Novgorod is cheaper than Moscow |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then a fast train or a flight of about 1.3 hours |
Compare PRMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At about ₹5.3 lakh it sits near the middle of our list. The comparison that matters for a Kerala family is the self-financing MBBS seat in Kerala at about ₹8.1 lakh a year: PRMU's tuition is two thirds of that, before hostel, flights and FMGE preparation. See MBBS fees in Kerala vs Russia.
Living cost in Nizhny Novgorod
Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Nizhny Novgorod is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel kitchen), a mobile plan and internet, metro and local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. With a population of about 1.2 million, the city is cheaper to live in than Moscow or Saint Petersburg. We have no verified monthly figure, so ask senior Indian students for their real spend before fixing the family budget.
Hostel and hostel fees at Privolzhsky University
We found no hostel price for degree students. The official site says a hostel is provided for full-time students of the foundation course, and an agent page lists 90,000 roubles a year, but that page may refer to another university, so we do not use it. Ask the international office in writing: which dormitory is given to first-year foreign students, how many share a room, the monthly or yearly fee, any deposit, and whether a place is kept for all six years.
Families often ask about the girls hostel at Privolzhsky University and its fees. Russian residences are usually separated by rooms or floors with a pass system at the entrance. Ask how female students are placed, who is on duty at the entrance and how far the dormitory is from the teaching hospitals.
NEET cut-off and eligibility for Privolzhsky University
We found no NEET cut-off of the university's own above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
There is an entrance test. The university holds tests for far-abroad paid applicants who study through a mediator language in English, remotely, in biology and chemistry, with a minimum of 42 points. Ask for the syllabus, the number of questions, the test dates and how many points the score is out of, because the minimum means little without the maximum. There is no published acceptance rate. In practice, students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the international office, directly or through us. Say that you want the English-language General Medicine programme.
Entrance test and admission letter
Take the remote English-language test in biology and chemistry. After the result and a document check the university issues an admission letter and a contract. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.
Invitation and visa
The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Nizhny Novgorod
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Nizhny Novgorod by train or air. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.
English-medium groups at Russian universities usually start between September and November. Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Privolzhsky University ranking and recognition
Families often search for the Privolzhsky Research Medical University ranking and world ranking. The university reported on its site that it was placed in the 1001+ band of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2024 (the subject was not stated on the page we read) and that it was ranked in the 2026 edition (the position was not read). These are university announcements and we did not check them against the THE site. A ranking says little about what matters most for an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask PRMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. Two searches of the WDOMS directory did not show a PRMU or Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy record. That is unconfirmed, so check the directory yourself before you apply; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
On language: the official fee table lists separate Russian-language and English-language prices, and the university says it offers full medical specialist programmes in English. We found no statement that Russian is introduced in later years, but clinical training with patients is usually in Russian, so ask for a written plan of the language of instruction for years 4–6.
FMGE passing percentage of Privolzhsky University
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. PRMU graduates have done better than the Russian average in every report since 2020. In 2022, 52 of 129 passed (40.3%) against 26.0%. In 2023, 35 of 124 passed (28.2%) against 19.4%. In 2024, 95 of 213 passed (44.6%) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 19 of 81 passed (23.5%) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 45 of 120 (37.5%) against 30.9%. Earlier results were 28.9% in 2020 and 42.2% in 2021.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 120 | 45 | 37.5% |
| June 2025 | 81 | 19 | 23.5% |
| 2024 | 213 | 95 | 44.6% |
| 2023 | 124 | 35 | 28.2% |
| 2022 | 129 | 52 | 40.3% |
| 2021 | 116 | 49 | 42.2% |
| 2020 | 76 | 22 | 28.9% |
Over 2022–2025 combined, PRMU passed 36.9% of 667 candidates, second among the 24 Russian universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking by FMGE results, and about 12 points above the Russian combined figure of about 25%. These are the results of Indian graduates who sat the exam, and they depend on who chooses to sit it, but seven good results in a row point to a university whose course prepares students for FMGE better than most. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same exam. Compare every university on the FMGE pass rate page.
Safety in Nizhny Novgorod for Indian students
Nizhny Novgorod is on the Volga, about 400 km in a straight line from Moscow and far from the Ukrainian border. It is not among the regions for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow issued a precaution advisory in August 2024 (Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk). We found no published report of an incident involving Indian students of PRMU. As in any big city, keep your passport copy with you, avoid isolated areas at night and use official taxi apps.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and save its emergency numbers.
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before you travel; it can change.
- Ask the university about security at the dormitory and the entrance control.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Nizhny Novgorod for Kerala students
Nizhny Novgorod is a city of about 1.23 million people (2021 census), where the Oka meets the Volga. It has a metro, which opened in 1985, universities, and a lower cost of living than the capitals. We found no official count of Indian students at PRMU, so ask the international office how many Indian and Malayali students are in the English groups and whether you can speak to them before you pay.
The winter is cold but not extreme for Russia: the January mean is −8.6 °C and the July mean 19.7 °C by Wikipedia's climate tables. A good winter jacket, boots, thermal wear, gloves and a hat are essential from the first October.

Kerala students and Indian food
Students from India in a Volga city of this size typically cook in the dormitory kitchen and buy rice, lentils, spices and tea at supermarkets or online. We have no verified list of Indian restaurants in Nizhny Novgorod, so ask seniors what they use. Cooking in a group keeps the monthly cost low. See our guide to Indian food in Russia.
Where Privolzhsky University is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
Privolzhsky Research Medical University is in Nizhny Novgorod, on the Volga. The distance from Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow is about 400 km in a straight line. The Strizh train takes about 3 hours 35 to 50 minutes and the Lastochka about 4 hours; the flight takes around 1.3 hours. The nearest airport is Strigino (Nizhny Novgorod International Airport, GOJ), which is operating according to Wikipedia. The time zone is Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a fast train or a domestic flight to Nizhny Novgorod. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no PRMU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the university for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. We use only General Medicine and the foundation course as the entry routes for a new student.
Privolzhsky University compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting PRMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Privolzhsky Research Medical University | Nizhny Novgorod | ₹5.3 lakh | 36.9% (rank 2) |
| Kazan State Medical University | Kazan | ₹5.4 lakh | 30.5% (rank 5) |
| Smolensk State Medical University | Smolensk | ₹5.2 lakh (agent figure) | 35.4% (rank 3) |
| Bashkir State Medical University | Ufa | ₹5.5 lakh | 27.9% (rank 8) |
At the same fee PRMU has the highest FMGE pass rate of the four, ahead of Smolensk, Kazan and Bashkir. Its weak points are the lack of a readable price order and the missing WDOMS record. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
PRMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. Our after MBBS in Russia guide explains each step.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
