Bashkir State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU) in Ufa is one of the largest destinations for Indian medical students in Russia: the university reported about 2,700 students from India in January 2025. Here are its fees in rupees from the official price list, its FMGE results year by year, the hostel, the NEET requirement, and what happened in the February 2026 attack on its students.
In short: BSMU is a state medical university founded in 1932 in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. First-year tuition for General Medicine is 490,080 roubles (about ₹5.5 lakh) on the university's price list. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 27.9%, above the Russian average of about 25%. The university lists the language of General Medicine as "Russian / English", so ask for written confirmation that your group is taught in English for all six years.

Bashkir State Medical University is the main medical school of the Republic of Bashkortostan, in the southern Urals. It was established in 1932 as the Bashkir State Medical Institute and became a university later. The main building is located in central Ufa, and the campus is spread over several buildings, residences and teaching hospitals in the city. It is a public institution under the Russian Ministry of Health, so it is not a private college. Besides General Medicine it teaches pediatrics, dentistry and preventive medicine, and it has its own university clinic.

The university says around 5,000 foreign students from 64 countries study there, and in January 2025 it reported 2,679 students and 4 residents from India. That makes BSMU one of the biggest Indian student communities in any Russian university, which shapes daily life: Indian food is easy to find, senior students help newcomers, and a student from Kerala is unlikely to be the only Malayali in the year.

Bashkir State Medical University fees for Indian students
The BSMU tuition fees are set in roubles. The university's English-language price page lists tuition for General Medicine at 490,080 roubles a year. The same figure applies to pediatrics, dentistry and preventive medicine. The page was current for the 2026-27 intake when we checked; it does not state whether the fee is fixed for later years, and Russian universities usually raise fees every year.
BSMU fee structure 2026-27
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹33.3 lakh |
So in rupees, the BSMU fee structure for 2026 works out to roughly ₹5.5 lakh a year in tuition at today's exchange rate, or about ₹33 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. Plan with a reserve of 10–20% for fee increases and for the rouble-rupee rate. Tuition is paid to the university's own bank account, per year or per semester.
| Cost item | What we know for BSMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year | 490,080 RUB (official price list) |
| Hostel | Not published on the price page; ask the international office |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; usually arranged through the university |
| Food | Most students cook in hostel kitchens; Ufa is cheaper than Moscow |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then about two hours to Ufa |
Compare BSMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. Its tuition is close to the middle of our list: cheaper than Moscow and Kazan Federal, more expensive than several Volga and Siberian universities.
Living cost in Ufa
Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Ufa is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel kitchen), a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. Ufa is cheaper to live in than Moscow, Saint Petersburg or Kazan. Ask senior Indian students at BSMU for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget; it varies most with how often a student eats out.
Hostel and hostel fees
BSMU houses foreign students in its own student residences in Ufa. Rooms are shared, with common kitchens where most Indian students cook. The university does not publish the hostel fee on its price page, so ask for it in writing together with the tuition; at Russian state universities it is usually a small part of the budget compared with tuition.
Families often ask about the girls hostel at Bashkir State Medical University and its fees. Russian university residences are usually mixed buildings with separate rooms or floors; ask the international office how rooms are allocated, whether female students are placed together, and what security there is at the entrance. After the February 2026 attack this question matters more than before (see the safety section below).
NEET cut-off and eligibility
BSMU does not set its own NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
The university may hold an entrance exam or interview for foreign applicants, usually in biology and chemistry. There is no published acceptance rate. In practice, students who meet the eligibility criteria and apply on time are usually admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later, so a student with a weak NEET score should think hard about the exam ahead. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international office, directly or through us.
Admission letter and contract
The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.
Invitation and visa
BSMU applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Ufa
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Ufa International Airport. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.
English-medium groups at Russian universities usually start between September and November. Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Ranking and recognition
Families often search for the BSMU ranking in Russia, its QS ranking or its world rating. We have not found BSMU in the main global university rankings for medicine, and Russian national ratings change their methods often. Rankings also say little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask BSMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. Check the university's listing in the WDOMS directory yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
FMGE passing percentage of Bashkir State Medical University
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. BSMU graduates have done better than the Russian average in every report since 2022 except the last one. In 2022, 38.4% passed against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 22.9% against 19.4%; in 2024, 30.9% against 29.5%. In June 2025, 21.9% passed against 18.1%. In December 2025 the result fell to 25.0%, below the Russian 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, BSMU passed 27.9% of 1,045 candidates, eighth among the 24 Russian universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 168 | 42 | 25.0% |
| June 2025 | 128 | 28 | 21.9% |
| 2024 | 340 | 105 | 30.9% |
| 2023 | 258 | 59 | 22.9% |
| 2022 | 151 | 58 | 38.4% |
| 2021 | 47 | 14 | 29.8% |
| 2020 | 49 | 9 | 18.4% |
The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare BSMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.
Safety: the 2026 stabbing incident at Bashkir State Medical University
The February 2026 attack. On 7 February 2026 a 15-year-old with a knife attacked students in a BSMU residence on Repina Street in Ufa. Seven people were hurt, including four students from India, two police officers and the attacker. Russian media reported that no guard was on duty at the time. The Indian Embassy in Moscow said the injured Indian students were stable and recovering, and officials from the Consulate General in Kazan visited them. Investigators opened a case for attempted murder and a second case for negligence against officials who had known about the boy's behaviour. Media reports linked him to a banned neo-Nazi group; the motive was still under investigation.
The head of Bashkortostan said security at universities in the republic would be tightened after the attack. In August 2026 an Indian student of the university also suffered minor injuries in a drone attack on Ufa, according to a PTI report. Ufa is far from the Ukrainian border, but drone strikes have reached cities deep inside Russia.
We found no reports of a "mass expulsion" or of Indian students being expelled from BSMU; searches for it lead to the 2026 attack. This is the latest news we could confirm in October 2026. What we suggest for any family considering BSMU:
- Ask the university what security the residence has now: guards, entry control, cameras.
- Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow and the Consulate General in Kazan in your phone, and register with the embassy after arrival.
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Ufa for Kerala students
Ufa is a city of over a million people on the Belaya River, the capital of Bashkortostan. It is a calm, green and fairly affordable city, cheaper than Moscow or Kazan. With thousands of Indian students at BSMU, Indian groceries and food are easier to find here than in most Russian cities, and Indian festivals are celebrated by the student community.
The hard part is the winter. From November to March temperatures stay below zero, a normal January day is around −10 to −15 °C, and cold spells go below −30 °C. A good winter jacket, boots and thermal wear are essential from the first year. Summers are warm and short.

Where BSMU Ufa is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
Bashkir State Medical University is in Ufa, the city in the southern Urals. The distance from Ufa to Moscow is about 1,160 km in a straight line, roughly two hours by air or about a day by train. The nearest airport is Ufa International Airport, with many daily flights from Moscow.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Ufa. Ufa time is only half an hour behind India, which makes calls home easy. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
There is no BSMU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask BSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. Besides General Medicine, BSMU offers pediatrics, dentistry and preventive medicine.
BSMU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting BSMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bashkir State Medical University | Ufa | ₹5.5 lakh | 27.9% |
| Kazan State Medical University | Kazan | ₹5.4 lakh | 30.5% |
| Privolzhsky Research Medical University | Nizhny Novgorod | ₹5.3 lakh | 36.9% |
| Smolensk State Medical University | Smolensk | ₹5.2 lakh (agent figure) | 35.4% |
At a similar fee, Kazan State Medical, Privolzhsky and Smolensk have had better FMGE results than BSMU over the last four years. BSMU's advantages are its very large Indian community and Ufa's lower living costs. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
BSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the BSMU diploma and the first salary in India.
