Palakkad Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Walayar: MBBS Fees, Cut Off, Seats

PIMS at Walayar, on the Palakkad–Coimbatore road, closed last among Kerala self-financing colleges in the 2026 state allotments: the final state-merit seats went to KEAM ranks 9,716 and 10,842. For many families it is the last Kerala option before they look outside the state. Here is the 2026 picture, with the fee caveat you need to know.

In short: Palakkad Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Walayar, has 150 MBBS seats approved for 2026-27, with up to 15% NRI and 15% all-India seats. Its last state-merit allotments in 2026 were KEAM rank 9,716 (round 1) and 10,842 (round 2), the highest closing ranks in Kerala. PIMS is not among the 12 colleges in the 2025 fee order; secondary listings quote general fees close to ₹8.6 lakh a year, which you must confirm with CEE Kerala. At ₹8–9 lakh a year the course costs ₹36–42 lakh in tuition; Russia costs ₹16–32 lakh for six years.

PIMS Walayar cut off in 2026

PIMS closed at the far end of the Kerala list. In the first CEE allotment of 2026 the last state-merit seat went to KEAM rank 9,716, and in the second to 10,842. It shares that band with Al-Azhar in Thodupuzha, Karuna in Palakkad, Mount Zion in Adoor, P K Das in Ottapalam and Kerala Medical College in Mangode, all of which reached ranks between about 8,900 and 10,800. Because PIMS is one of the last colleges to fill, it is also one of the first where seats reappear in round 3 and the stray-vacancy round when students higher up leave for other states or courses.

That makes PIMS the college where a rank between 9,000 and 12,000 is most uncertain. If your rank is in that band, put PIMS in your options, but prepare a second plan at the same time; the later rounds run into October, and Russian universities start the academic year in September–November, with visa and attestation taking several weeks.

PIMS fees: what is and is not confirmed

The Fee Regulatory Committee order for 2025-26 lists 12 Kerala colleges, at ₹8,10,175 to ₹9,31,118 a year for a general seat and ₹22,74,006 for an NRI seat. PIMS is not in it. Admission listings give different figures for PIMS, from a "total fee" of about ₹45 lakh to annual NRI fees of ₹21–23 lakh, without saying which year or period each covers. We do not repeat a single number as fact: ask the college for the fee notified for 2026-27, and check that it is consistent with the CEE prospectus and the 54-month rule (from July 2026 Kerala colleges may charge only for the 54 months of study).

For planning, assume a general seat in the same range as the other self-financing colleges, about ₹8–9 lakh a year, which is ₹36–42 lakh for 54 months before hostel and special fees, and an NRI seat around ₹1 crore.

Why choose a Russian university over PIMS

This is the comparison most families ask us for, point by point, with the figures from the official orders.

No rank race

NEET qualifying mark

Even PIMS, the last college to fill, stopped at rank 10,842 in 2026. A Russian state university admits on the NEET-UG qualifying mark and 50% in Class 12 physics, chemistry and biology (40% for reserved categories). No state rank list, no waiting for rounds.

Lower total tuition

₹16–32 lakh

Six years of tuition at a Russian state university, against ₹36.5–41.9 lakh for a Kerala self-financing seat over 54 months. The difference usually covers hostel and flights for the whole course.

Price fixed before you fly

In your contract

The fee for foreign students is set in the university's price order and written into your contract year by year. In Kerala the Fee Regulatory Committee refixes fees, and hostel and special fees come on top.

Transparent payment

Invoice from the university

Fees go to the university's bank account against its invoice. There is no capitation, no management-seat payment and no booking amount to a middleman.

No lost year

Admission into autumn

Many Russian universities accept Indian students into October and November. A student who misses the last KEAM round can still start medicine in the same academic year.

Choose by results

54 universities

You pick from 54 English-medium universities on our list and see each one's FMGE results; the best pass more than one candidate in three. In Kerala, at a late rank, you take the seat that is left.

What Russia does not give you: home food, a Kerala hospital during the course, and a licence without the exam. Every graduate of a foreign university must pass FMGE (later NExT) and do a year of internship in India. Choose a university with strong FMGE results and plan the exam from the first year.

Seats, quotas and admission

The Health and Family Welfare Department approved 150 MBBS seats at PIMS for 2026-27, with an NRI quota of up to 15% and an all-India share of 15%. State-merit seats come through CEE Kerala: NEET-UG, the KEAM application with the medical course, the NEET score upload in August, the rank list, option registration and allotment. The all-India seats are also allotted by CEE to candidates irrespective of domicile, which is why students from Tamil Nadu and other states appear at Walayar.

Walayar is at the Tamil Nadu border, about 25 km from Palakkad town and close to Coimbatore. Coimbatore airport (CJB) and Kochi (COK) are the usual airports for a family flying in.

PIMS or a Russian university: the honest comparison

For a student at rank 10,000 the question is not "Kerala or abroad" in general. It is this: a self-financing seat that may or may not come in a late round, at ₹36–42 lakh in tuition, against a Russian state university that will admit you with the NEET qualifying mark at ₹16–32 lakh in tuition for six years. The Russian route adds a year, FMGE, distance and winter; the Kerala route adds uncertainty about whether the seat comes at all.

Kerala figures: Government of Kerala and Fee Regulatory Committee orders as listed on our Kerala colleges page; course totals cover the 54 months of study. Russian figures: first-year fees from university price orders at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026, multiplied by six as if the fee never rose. FMGE: NBEMS reports, all sessions 2022–2025.

Three rules decide whether a Russian degree is worth anything back home. The NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and a licence to practise in Russia; then the graduate must pass FMGE (to be replaced by NExT) and do 12 more months of internship in India. Across all Russian universities about one candidate in four passed FMGE in 2022–2025, but the spread is wide: Orenburg 38.6%, Privolzhsky 36.9%, Smolensk 35.4%, Mordovia 32.0%, while several others are under 15%. The full list is on our FMGE pass-rate page.

If you choose Russia, choose by results, not by the lowest fee: the universities in the top third of the FMGE table cost little more than the cheapest ones. Read the lowest-fee list with FMGE results, why NEET is still needed and what to do after the NEET 2026 result.

Before you pay a self-financing college

Whether you choose this college or another one, ask for five things in writing before the fee goes out. First, the full fee schedule for 2026-27, not only the tuition: hostel, mess, special fee, university and exam fees, caution deposit. Second, confirmation that no fee is charged for the internship months, as the July 2026 order requires. Third, any bond or security-deposit terms. Fourth, the refund rule if you leave after a later round. Fifth, the hostel distance and transport for clinical postings. The same five questions apply to a Russian university, where you should also ask for the contract in English and the price order for foreign students. Families who compare both on paper usually decide within a week; families who compare promises usually decide too late.

PIMS Walayar: questions students ask

What is the PIMS Palakkad cut off for MBBS?

In 2026 the last state-merit seat went to KEAM rank 9,716 in round 1 and 10,842 in round 2, the highest closing ranks among Kerala self-financing colleges that year.

What is the MBBS fee at Palakkad Institute of Medical Sciences?

PIMS is not in the 2025 government fee order, and the figures in listings disagree. Ask the college for the 2026-27 notified fee; for planning, the other self-financing colleges charge ₹8.1–9.3 lakh a year for a general seat.

How many seats does PIMS Walayar have?

150 MBBS seats approved for 2026-27, with up to 15% NRI and 15% all-India seats.

Is PIMS a government college?

No. It is a self-financing college; its state-quota seats are allotted by CEE Kerala.

Should I wait for a PIMS seat or go to Russia?

Do both in parallel. Keep PIMS in your options for the later rounds and, at the same time, secure a Russian admission letter, so that a missed seat in October does not cost you the year.
