In short: Mordovia State University (MRSU) is a state national research university in Saransk, the capital of Mordovia, with its roots in a teachers' institute opened in 1931. Its price order of 1 June 2026 gives 350,300 roubles (about ₹4.0 lakh) for the first year of English-language General Medicine. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 32.0% of 1,036 candidates, against a Russian average of about 25%. The university does not say on the pages we read that all six years are in English, so get that in writing.

Mordovia State University, officially the National Research Mordovia State University named after N.P. Ogarev (MRSU), is the main university of the Republic of Mordovia. English Wikipedia dates it to 1 October 1931, when it opened as an agronomy and pedagogical institute; it became a university in October 1957 and received national research university status on 20 May 2010. It is a public institution under the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, not a private college. Medicine is taught in its Medical Institute, which sits inside a large classical university, so students share the city and campus life with future teachers, engineers and economists. That is different from a stand-alone medical university such as Kazan State Medical University.

The English wording you will see in searches is "Mordovia State University", "Mordovia State Medical University", "Mordovia medical university" or "Saransk medical university". They all lead to the same Medical Institute in Saransk. The university's own news item of 15 April 2024 says 890 Indian citizens were studying there, 885 of them in General Medicine taught in English, and that more than 250 had moved from Ukraine after 2022. The same item reports MRSU's first foreign representative office, opened on 13 April 2024 in Mahendragarh, Haryana. Student numbers for the whole university differ by source (from about 20,000 to about 28,000), so we do not quote one.

Mordovia State University fees for Indian students

MRSU sets its fees in roubles and publishes them as orders on the "Paid educational services" page of its official disclosure site. Order No. 689 of 1 June 2026 sets the 2026/27 price for first-year entrants. Annex 2 of that order is for foreign citizens and lists two lines for specialty 31.05.01 General Medicine in the Medical Institute: the Russian-language programme at 269,300 roubles and the programme "in English" at 350,300 roubles a year. The same annex gives 159,500 roubles for several humanities programmes, so medicine in English costs more than twice as much.

MRSU fee structure 2026-27

Families who search for Mordovia State Medical University fees, the fees structure or the Mordovia State University MBBS total fees usually want one table. Here it is: the six-year total in rupees at the official first-year price.

Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year)INR
Tuition, 6 years₹23.8 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

In rupees, the Mordovia State University fee for Indian students works out to about ₹4.0 lakh a year in tuition at today's exchange rate, or about ₹23.8 lakh over six years if the first-year price stayed flat. That table multiplies the first-year price by six, so read it as an upper estimate, because the university's second order (No. 688 of 1 June 2026, for second and later courses) lists lower prices for older cohorts: 346,900, 326,000, 317,900, 311,300 and 309,800 roubles for courses 2 to 6 on the English track. Those are prices for students who joined in earlier years, not a promise for a new student, so do not add them up. Plan a 10–20% reserve for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate, and ask for the price-change clause in the contract. Tuition is paid to the university's own account, per year or per semester as the contract says.

Cost itemWhat we know for MRSU
Tuition, first year, English track350,300 RUB (order No. 689, 1 June 2026)
Tuition, first year, Russian track for foreigners269,300 RUB (same order)
HostelNo official price found; ask the International Relations Office in writing
Medical insuranceCompulsory for foreign students; the university has an insurance page for international students
FoodMost students cook; Saransk is far cheaper than Moscow
FlightsKerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then a train or a regional flight to Saransk

Compare MRSU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At about ₹4.0 lakh it is below Moscow, Kazan and Ufa and close to Arkhangelsk and Barnaul. Next to Kerala it is a different scale: the Kerala self-financing MBBS fee is about ₹8.1 lakh a year, so the whole six-year MRSU tuition is roughly three years of Kerala self-financing fees. Our Kerala versus Russia fee comparison has the detail.

Living cost in Saransk

Beyond tuition and hostel, a monthly budget in Saransk covers food, a mobile plan, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. Saransk is a city of about 300,000 people and is much cheaper than Moscow or Saint Petersburg. We have no verified monthly figure for it, so ask senior Indian students at MRSU what they really spend before you fix the family budget. See also cost of living in Russia.

Hostel and hostel fees at Mordovia State University

MRSU houses students in university residences. A search result quotes 14 dormitories for more than 4,700 students, but that is a third-party figure. The university's admissions FAQ says foreign applicants can stay temporarily in campus dormitories if they have a medical certificate and an authorisation letter from the International Relations Office. We could not find an official hostel price for 2026. Agents quote anything from about $500 to $900 a year, and they disagree, so do not rely on them. Ask for the hostel fee, the deposit and what is included (bedding, utilities, internet) in writing before you pay the first instalment.

Families also ask about a girls hostel at Mordovia State University. Russian residences are normally mixed buildings, with rooms for two to four students of the same sex. Ask which building the Indian first-years go to, whether girls are placed together, who is on duty at the entrance and whether there are cameras and access cards. After the February 2026 attack on students in a residence in Ufa, this is a fair question to put to any university (see the safety section).

NEET cut-off and eligibility

MRSU does not publish a NEET cut-off of its own. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE or practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC; in 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113. The 3 May 2026 exam was cancelled after a paper leak and held again on 21 June 2026, with the result on 16 July 2026.
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

The university's international admissions page does not mention NEET. It lists the legalised school diploma with its mark sheet, the passport, and Russian translations certified by the Russian embassy's consular notary. After a first review of the documents, applicants take online entrance examinations through their personal account at p.mrsu.ru. The page does not say which subjects are tested. There is no published acceptance rate. Students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later, so a student with a weak NEET score should think hard about that exam. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at Mordovia State University

  1. Apply through the personal account

Open an account at p.mrsu.ru, print and sign the application, and upload the passport and the legalised Class 12 diploma with its mark sheet, with Russian translations. We can do this with you.

  2. Online entrance examinations

After the document check the university invites you to online entrance tests. Ask which subjects are tested and which language the test is in.

  3. Agreement, advance payment and invitation

You sign the learning agreement and pay the advance. After the enrolment order the university issues a visa invitation, which it says takes 30 to 45 days. Read the agreement for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.

  4. Visa and arrival in Saransk

With the invitation you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai. On arrival you hand the passport, migration card and original documents to the International Relations Office at Bolshevistskaya Street 68.

Apply soon after the NEET result, because documents, legalisation and the visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains the documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail; see also the Russian student visa for Indians.

Ranking and recognition

Families search for the Mordovia State University ranking, its world ranking or its QS rating. English Wikipedia lists one regional result: QS Emerging Europe and Central Asia, 221–230 in 2022. We have not found MRSU in the world QS table for medicine, and national Russian ratings change their methods often. For an Indian student three things matter more than a rank:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask MRSU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. We did not check the WDOMS listing for MRSU. Look it up yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

FMGE passing percentage of Mordovia State University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. MRSU graduates did better than the Russian average in four of the five reports since 2022. In 2022, 30.1% passed against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 18.8% against 19.4%, slightly below; in 2024, 36.1% against 29.5%. In June 2025, 21.6% passed against 18.1%, and in December 2025 the result was 43.3% against 30.9%, with 120 of 277 candidates passing. Over 2022–2025 combined, MRSU passed 32.0% of 1,036 candidates, fourth of the 24 Russian universities with at least 300 candidates in 2022–2025 in our ranking. NBEMS lists the university under several spellings, such as "National Research Ogarev Mordovia State University Medical Faculty"; we added the lines together.

December 202527712043.3%

2021682333.8%
202035822.9%
Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

The table also shows 2020 and 2021 figures. The 2023 dip and the 2025 jump show how much one year can move, because each report covers a different batch of graduates. A 32% pass rate still means two out of three candidates did not pass at the first sitting. Compare MRSU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page, and read how FMGE works before you decide.

Safety in Saransk for Indian students

Saransk is in central Russia, about 510 km east of Moscow in a straight line, far from the Ukrainian border. It is not one of the regions (Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk) for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised precautions in August 2024. We found no report of an attack on Indian students in Saransk or at MRSU. That is not a promise of safety. Drone strikes have reached cities deep inside Russia, and in February 2026 a teenager attacked students in a university residence in Ufa, injuring four Indian students. What we suggest for any family considering MRSU:

  • Ask the university what security the residences have: guards, entry control, cameras, rules for visitors.
  • Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival.
  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel, and again before each flight home.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Saransk for Kerala students

Saransk is the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, with an estimated 309,000 inhabitants in 2025. It hosted matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Mordovia Arena, which left it with modern roads and a stadium, though it remains a quiet provincial city. With around 890 Indian students at the university in 2024, a student from Kerala is unlikely to be alone in the year, and senior students can tell you which shops sell rice, spices and lentils. Ask them also about the Malayali group at MRSU; we do not have a verified count.

The hard part is the winter. The mean temperature in January is about −9.6 °C and in July about 19.9 °C, so you need a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear from the first year; cold spells are colder than the mean. Our winter packing list helps.

Where MRSU is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala

Mordovia State University is in Saransk, in the Volga region of central Russia. The distance from Saransk to Moscow is about 510 km in a straight line. The nearest airport is Saransk Airport, which according to Wikipedia is served mostly by small regional carriers on weekdays from Moscow Domodedovo, and there is a daily direct train from Moscow. Check both timetables before you book, because schedules in regional Russia change.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a train or a short domestic flight to Saransk. Saransk keeps Moscow time, which is 2.5 hours behind India, so calls home are easy. For the wider picture see the universities page and the cities list.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no MRSU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee. See MBBS in Russia scholarships.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask MRSU for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The price order also lists pediatrics, pharmacy and dentistry in the Medical Institute, with separate English-language lines for dentistry and for General Medicine; we only cover General Medicine here.

MRSU compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting MRSU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition from each university's price list and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Mordovia State UniversitySaransk₹4.0 lakh32.0%
Northern State Medical UniversityArkhangelsk₹4.0 lakh22.5%
Altai State Medical UniversityBarnaul₹4.0 lakh23.7%
Penza State UniversityPenza₹4.4 lakh30.2%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 from each university's own price page; the intake year differs by page (Altai: 2025/26). Confirm current fees with each university.

At a similar fee, MRSU's combined FMGE result is higher than that of Northern and Altai and close to Penza's. Its advantage is a large Indian community and a clear English-language price line; its drawback is that the language of the whole course is not spelled out. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

MRSU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet). See FMGE versus NExT.
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Plan for a year or more between the MRSU diploma and the first salary in India. What happens after MBBS in Russia explains the steps.
