Northern State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Northern State Medical University (NSMU) in Arkhangelsk is a public medical university on the White Sea, about 990 km from Moscow. Its English fees page gives 350,000 roubles (about ₹4.0 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine in 2026-27. Below are the fee structure in rupees, the hostel, the NEET requirement, FMGE results year by year, and an honest look at winter, daylight and travel in the far north.

In short: NSMU is a state medical university opened in 1932 in Arkhangelsk, in the Russian North. Its English fees page gives 350,000 roubles (about ₹4.0 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine in 2026-27. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 22.5%, below the Russian average of about 25%. The fees page calls the programme "taught in English", but we found no statement that English continues for all six years, so ask for that in writing.

Northern State Medical University is a medical college in Arkhangelsk, Russia, on the coast of the White Sea. It opened in 1932 as the Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute, became the Arkhangelsk State Medical Academy in 1994 and was an academy until 2000. Dates in different sources vary slightly (an order of October 1931, opening in 1932), and the World Directory of Medical Schools lists 1932. It is a federal state institution under the Russian Ministry of Health, so it is a public university, not a private college.

The official address is Troitsky Avenue 51, Arkhangelsk. The English version of the university website is at nsmu.ru/en/. The WDOMS directory lists the university, with Russian and English as languages of instruction. We found no official figure for how many Indian students study at NSMU, and no figure for students from Kerala. That is worth asking directly: a large Indian group makes the first winter much easier, and a small one does not.

Northern State Medical University fees for Indian students

NSMU sets its tuition in roubles. The official English page on degree programme fees lists "General Medicine for International Students, taught in English", full-time, six years, at 350,000 roubles a year for first-year students in 2026-27. That page covers only the first-year intake of 2026-27, so it does not tell you what the fee will be in years two to six. We read the page as a search-engine excerpt, because the university website did not open from our side, so ask the university to send the current price list as a PDF before you pay anything.

Tuition, 6 years₹23.8 lakh

In rupees, the Northern State Medical University fee structure for 2026 works out to about ₹4.0 lakh a year in tuition at today's exchange rate, or about ₹24 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. Russian universities usually raise fees over time and the rouble moves against the rupee, so keep a reserve of 10–20%. A Kerala family should set this against the total cost of the Kerala college seat they actually hold an offer for, not against a general figure.

You may see other numbers. Agent websites quote 340,000 roubles and 320,000 roubles a year for NSMU, and older pages show a fees structure for 2022 that is no longer valid. These are agent figures and are not sourced to the university. Use the university's own price list, and treat agent tables as a rough guide only.

Living cost in Arkhangelsk

Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Arkhangelsk is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and, in the first year, proper winter clothing. In a city this cold, clothing is a real cost: a coat, boots, gloves, hat and thermal layers bought in Kerala rarely work, so most students buy them after arrival or at least check the specification with seniors. We have no verified monthly figure for Arkhangelsk and will not invent one. Ask current Indian students at NSMU for their real monthly spend, including heating-season electricity if the hostel charges for it.

Hostel and hostel fees

The NSMU website has an "Accommodation" page, which we could not read. We found no official hostel price. Two agent sources disagree: one quotes 40,000 roubles a year (about ₹0.45 lakh), another quotes 12,000 roubles for the first year (about ₹14,000) and says the hostel is optional in later years. The gap is large enough that neither figure should be used for budgeting. Ask the international office for the hostel fee, the room type, how many students share a room, and whether the fee is charged yearly or monthly.

Families often ask about the hostel at Northern State Medical University and whether there is a separate girls hostel. We have no verified answer. Russian university residences are usually mixed buildings with separate rooms or floors, so ask how rooms are allocated, whether female students are placed together, what the entrance security is, and how the building is heated in winter. Ask for photos of the actual rooms and kitchen. The photos on agent sites are often generic.

NEET cut-off and eligibility

We found no NEET cut-off set by NSMU above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE or practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

We found no published acceptance rate and no entrance exam rules for NSMU. Ask the international office whether foreign applicants sit an interview or a test in biology and chemistry. A student with a weak NEET score should think about the exam six years ahead: the real filter is FMGE, and NSMU's graduates have passed it at a rate below the Russian average. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at NSMU

  1. Apply online

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international office, directly or through us.

  2. Admission letter and contract

The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction in every year, and the internship.

  3. Invitation and visa

NSMU applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Arkhangelsk

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then go on to Arkhangelsk by a domestic flight or train. Ask the university who meets new students on arrival and completes the migration registration.

Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. We do not have NSMU's intake dates, so ask for them in writing. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail. Kerala families can start the apostille early, since the documents are needed for any Russian university.

Ranking and recognition

Families search for the Northern State Medical University ranking and its world ranking. We found no national or world ranking for NSMU that we can source, so we do not quote one. Rankings also say little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask NSMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. NSMU has a WDOMS record. Open it yourself and check the name, the city and the languages shown; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do. On our own ranking by FMGE results, NSMU is 14th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates.

FMGE passing percentage of Northern State Medical University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. NSMU graduates have been below the Russian average in every report since 2022. In 2022, 24.0% passed against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 18.8% against 19.4%; in 2024, 25.8% against 29.5%. In June 2025, 17.1% passed against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 24.6% against 30.9%. The gap is small in some years and wider in others. Over 2022–2025 combined, NSMU passed 22.5% of 2,654 candidates, against about 25% for Russia. In 2021 it did a little better than average (26.0% against 24.8%), and in 2020 it did not (11.4% against 16.0%).

What this means: a student at NSMU should expect to prepare for FMGE seriously from the third or fourth year, with Indian-pattern subjects, and not leave it to the last semester. The numbers do not say why results are lower; the pass rate depends on the student's own preparation, on the English teaching and on the clinical training. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare NSMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page and in the ranking by FMGE results.

Safety in Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk is in the far north of European Russia, a long way from the western and southern border regions that the Indian Embassy in Moscow named in its August 2024 advice (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk). We know of no published incident involving students at NSMU. Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before booking travel, because it can change.

In practice, the main safety questions in Arkhangelsk are about cold and darkness, not crime:

  • Frostbite and falls on ice are the common winter injuries. Dress for the coldest day, not the average one.
  • Walking alone late on dark, icy evenings is a bigger risk in December than in September. Ask seniors which routes and hours to avoid.
  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its contact details in your phone. Ask NSMU which consular office covers the region.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Arkhangelsk for Kerala students

Arkhangelsk lies on the White Sea coast at about 64.5° north, roughly two degrees of latitude south of the Arctic Circle. It is a long way from Kerala in every sense: the distances to other big cities are large, and the city is far quieter than Moscow or Saint Petersburg. We have no verified information about Indian groceries or Indian restaurants in Arkhangelsk. Most Indian students in Russian cities cook in hostel kitchens, so ask NSMU seniors where rice, spices and lentils are bought and what they cost.

Winter, frost and daylight

Frost of −30 to −40 °C is the main question for northern and Ural cities. Arkhangelsk is far enough north that winter days are very short and summer evenings stay light for a long time, which is hard to imagine from Kerala. Many students find the dark months tiring in the first year. Plan for this:

  • Clothing: a proper winter coat, insulated boots, gloves, hat and thermal layers. Buy after arrival if seniors advise so, but budget for it.
  • Indoor life: buildings are heated and warm. The cold is a problem between the hostel, the bus stop and the classroom.
  • Health: ask about vitamin D and how the university handles seasonal tiredness or low mood. Do not wait until it becomes serious.
  • First semester: arriving in September gives you time to adjust before the deep cold arrives.

Arkhangelsk: 990 km from Moscow in a straight line; local time is 2.5 h behind India.

The Northern State Medical University location is Troitsky Avenue 51 in Arkhangelsk, on the White Sea in the Russian North. The distance from Arkhangelsk to Moscow is about 990 km in a straight line. The city is in the Moscow time zone, 2.5 hours behind India, so evening calls home are easy.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight or train to Arkhangelsk. We have not verified the Moscow–Arkhangelsk timetable, the nearest airport arrangements or current fares, so book the domestic leg only after the admission letter and check it with NSMU. Remember that winter weather can delay northern flights, so do not schedule exams or visa dates tightly around a trip. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no NSMU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask NSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. Agent pages describe the medium at NSMU as "English and Russian"; this is the most important question to put to the university.

NSMU compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting NSMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Northern State Medical UniversityArkhangelsk₹4.0 lakh22.5%
Tver State Medical UniversityTver₹4.9 lakh (2026/27 order)17.2%
Tambov State UniversityTambov₹4.0 lakh (agent figure)27.4%
North Ossetian State Medical AcademyVladikavkaz₹4.1 lakh22.4%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Tambov's fee is an agent figure and Tver's is from its 2026/27 order; confirm current fees with each university.

At a similar fee (Tver now costs about ₹0.9 lakh more), NSMU is ahead of Tver and level with North Ossetian, while Tambov has had a higher FMGE pass rate. None of the four is far above the Russian average of about 25%. Note that Vladikavkaz is in the North Caucasus, where safety needs a closer look (see its own page). See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

NSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the NSMU diploma and the first salary in India. Because NSMU's FMGE results have been below the Russian average, build FMGE preparation into your plan from the start, and keep money aside in case a second attempt is needed.

Pros and cons for a student from Kerala

Northern State Medical University: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MBBS fee at Northern State Medical University for Indian students?

The university's English fees page gives 350,000 roubles for the first year of General Medicine in 2026-27, about ₹4.0 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Over six years that is roughly ₹24 lakh in tuition if the fee did not change; fees usually rise, so keep a reserve. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.

What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Northern State Medical University?

We found no official hostel price. Agents quote anything from 12,000 to 40,000 roubles a year, so neither number is safe to budget with. Ask the international office for the hostel fee, room type, security and heating in writing before you pay.

What NEET score is required for admission to Northern State Medical University?

You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: for the 2026 intake that is 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (in 2025 it was 144 and 113; the marks rose in 2026 after the exam was re-held). We found no higher cut-off set by NSMU; ask whether it holds an entrance test or interview for foreign applicants.

Does MBBS at Northern State Medical University meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?

The fees page lists the programme as "taught in English", and WDOMS lists Russian and English. We found no statement on whether English continues for all six years. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university, so get written confirmation of each point.

Are there students from Kerala at Northern State Medical University, and is Indian food available in Arkhangelsk?

We found no official figure for Indian students or for students from Kerala at NSMU. We also have no verified information on Indian groceries or restaurants in Arkhangelsk. Ask the university for contact with current Indian students, and ask us to connect you with a Malayalam-speaking counsellor.
