Altai State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Altai State Medical University (ASMU) in Barnaul, Siberia, is a state medical university founded in 1954 with an English-medium General Medicine track introduced in 2023. The university's own 2025 admission table gives 357,300 roubles for the first year on the English-language line (about ₹4.0 lakh), about ₹24 lakh for six years if the price stays flat. Agents quote ₹3.4 to ₹4.3 lakh. Here are the fees we can support, the FMGE results year by year, the hostel, the NEET requirement and the Siberian winter.
In short: Altai State Medical University is a state university in Barnaul, founded in 1954 under the Russian Ministry of Health. The university's 2025 admission table for foreign students gives 357,300 roubles for the first year on the intermediary-language (English) line, about ₹4.0 lakh, and about ₹24 lakh for six years if the price stays flat (first year × 6, our estimate). The Russian-language line for foreigners is 282,700 roubles. Agents quote 301,775 to 380,000, older or different figures. The table shows no order number, so confirm the fee for your intake. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 23.7%, a little below the Russian average of about 25%. The university lists an English-medium track, but we found no written statement that all six years, including clinical practice, are in English: get that in writing.

Altai State Medical University is the main medical school of Altai Krai in southern Siberia. It was founded on 7 August 1954 by a decree of the RSFSR Council of Ministers as Altai State Medical Institute, was named after the Lenin Komsomol from 1978 and became a university in 1994. It is a federal state institution under the Ministry of Health, not a private college. The address is Lenin Avenue 40 in Barnaul. Do not confuse it with Altai State University (asu.ru), which is a different institution.
The Faculty of Foreign Students lists two separate six-year General Medicine programmes: an English-medium one and a bilingual one. The dean's message says the English-medium track was introduced in 2023, so it is young. We found no official count of students from India. The Russian Wikipedia infobox gives 350 foreign students for 2015, which is not specific to India and is old. For a Kerala family this matters: you will probably be among a small group, and you should ask the university how many Indian students are in the English-medium group now.

Altai State Medical University fees for Indian students
The Altai State Medical University fees are set in roubles. The university's admission page for foreign students (asmu.ru) carries a table for the 2025 admission campaign, although the page heading still shows an old year (2021/22), so we treat the table as 2025/26. For General Medicine (31.05.01) it shows two lines: 357,300 roubles a year when the intermediary language (English) is used, and 282,700 roubles a year for foreigners studying in Russian. The table gives no order number or date. The older 245,000 roubles on the Faculty of Foreign Students page belongs to the 2020 admission period and is outdated.
ASMU fee structure 2025 (admission table, English line)
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹24.3 lakh |
The table above multiplies the first-year English-line price of 357,300 roubles by six, which gives about 2,143,800 roubles, or about ₹24 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate. That is a planning estimate: the university table gives a first-year price, not a six-year path. Agents quote different numbers that you will meet on other sites. A Careers360 list from 2025 shows 301,775 roubles a year (about ₹3.4 lakh), one agent table for 2026 shows 380,000 roubles of tuition (about ₹4.3 lakh) and 2,820,000 roubles for six years including hostel (about ₹32 lakh), and another gives US$4,110 a year (about ₹3.9 lakh). Treat those as older or different figures, not as the price. Ask ASMU for the price list for the English-medium track for your intake year, and ask whether the fee is fixed for six years or revised every year. Russian state universities often index fees yearly, so keep a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate.
| Cost item | What we know for ASMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year, English line | 357,300 RUB, about ₹4.0 lakh (university admission table, 2025 campaign; no order number shown) |
| Tuition, six years, English line | About 2,143,800 RUB, about ₹24 lakh (our estimate: first year × 6) |
| Tuition, first year, Russian-language line for foreigners | 282,700 RUB, about ₹3.2 lakh (same table; not an English-medium option) |
| Agent figures | 301,775 RUB (Careers360, 2025); 380,000 RUB (agent table, 2026); older or different |
| Hostel | Agents quote 80,000–90,000 RUB a year; the university has not published a figure we could read |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask which policy and what it costs |
| Winter clothing | Essential in Barnaul from the first year |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow, then about 4.2 hours by air to Barnaul |
Compare ASMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. Its English-line fee is below Kazan, Ufa and Nizhny Novgorod, but above the cheaper agent figure of ₹3.4 lakh, which should not be your budget.
Living cost in Barnaul
Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Barnaul is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel kitchen), a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and heavy winter clothing in the first year. We have no verified figure for Barnaul prices, so ask senior students at ASMU for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget. Barnaul is a city of 630,877 people (2021 census), much smaller than Moscow, which usually means lower rents and food prices than in the capital.
Hostel and hostel fees
Foreign students at Russian state universities are normally housed in the university's student residences, in shared rooms with common kitchens. Agents quote the Altai State Medical University hostel at 80,000 roubles a year (about ₹0.9 lakh) on one page and 90,000 roubles on another. These are agent figures; the admission table we read gives tuition only, and we found no hostel price from ASMU itself. Ask the international office for the fee in writing together with the tuition, and ask whether it is charged per month or per year, because other universities quote monthly rates.
Parents often ask about the girls hostel. We found no ASMU statement on it. Ask how rooms are allocated, whether female students are housed together, what the entrance security is, and how far the hostel is from the teaching buildings and hospitals, because in a Siberian winter distance matters.
NEET cut-off and eligibility
ASMU does not set a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
We found no published entrance exam for foreign applicants at ASMU. Some universities hold an interview or a test in biology and chemistry; ask whether ASMU does. There is no published acceptance rate. Students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted, so the real filter is FMGE six years later. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at ASMU
Apply and send documents
Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international office, directly or through us.
Admission letter and contract
The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction (English-medium or bilingual track) and the internship.
Invitation and visa
The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Barnaul
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Barnaul. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.
Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Ranking and recognition
Families search for the ASMU ranking in Russia or its world ranking. The university has no ranking position that we could verify. Secondary sources mention a place in a RAEX list in 2015 and bands in two newer international pilot rankings, but they are not official, they are not specific to medicine and they say little about teaching for an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask ASMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. We could not confirm ASMU's WDOMS listing, so check it yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
FMGE passing percentage of Altai State Medical University
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. ASMU's graduates passed above the Russian average in 2022 and 2023 and below it in 2024 and December 2025. In 2022, 34.3% passed (37 of 108) against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 22.1% against 19.4%; in 2024, 22.3% against 29.5%. In June 2025, 17.8% passed against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 24.8% against 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, 23.7% of 807 candidates passed, thirteenth among the 24 Russian universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking, and slightly under the Russian combined figure of about 25%.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 133 | 33 | 24.8% |
| June 2025 | 107 | 19 | 17.8% |
| 2024 | 251 | 56 | 22.3% |
| 2023 | 208 | 46 | 22.1% |
| 2022 | 108 | 37 | 34.3% |
The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare ASMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page. Note that ASMU's English-medium track began in 2023, so the 2022 result comes from graduates of earlier groups, and the latest sessions are the ones that tell more about today's teaching.
Safety in Barnaul for Indian students
Barnaul is in southern Siberia, about 2,900 km east of Moscow in a straight line. It is far from the Ukrainian border and is not one of the regions where the Indian Embassy advised precautions in August 2024 (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk). We found no safety incident at ASMU or in Barnaul. Kazakhstan lies to the south, and the Altai Mountains are the main tourist area. What we suggest for any family:
- Ask the university about hostel security: guards, entry control and cameras.
- Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival.
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.
The practical risk in Barnaul is the cold. Hypothermia and slipping on ice are the usual winter problems, so dress properly and do not walk long distances at night in sub-zero weather.

Life in Barnaul for Kerala students
Barnaul is a city of about 630,000 people on the Ob River, the capital of Altai Krai and the closest large city to the Altai Mountains. Long-term averages are −16.2 °C in January and 19.9 °C in July. The main question for a student from Kerala is the frost: cold spells of −30 °C and below are normal in a Siberian winter. A proper winter jacket, boots, thermal wear, gloves and a hat are needed from the first day. Summers are warm.

We found no verified information on Malayali students at ASMU or on Indian restaurants and groceries in Barnaul. Most Indian students in smaller Russian cities cook in the hostel kitchen and buy spices from home or from Indian shops that open where the community is large. Ask the university to connect you with current Indian students, and ask us: we can often put you in touch with families whose children are already in Russia.
Where ASMU is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
Altai State Medical University is in Barnaul, Altai Krai. The distance from Barnaul to Moscow is about 2,930 km in a straight line, about 4.2 hours by air. Trains from Moscow take 49 to 62 hours (sources differ, and the direct train runs only a few days a week), so most students fly. The nearest airport is Barnaul Gherman Titov International Airport (BAX), which is operating.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Barnaul. Barnaul time is 1.5 hours ahead of India, which makes calls home possible in the morning and evening. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no ASMU scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask ASMU for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training involves Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The programmes we found for foreign students at ASMU are General Medicine in English and a bilingual General Medicine track.
ASMU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting ASMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altai State Medical University | Barnaul | ₹4.0 lakh (university table, English line, 2025) | 23.7% |
| Perm State Medical University | Perm | ₹4.1 lakh (price order, English track, 2025-26) | 27.7% |
| Voronezh State Medical University | Voronezh | ₹4.9 lakh (price list 2026-27, English elements) | 19.1% |
| Tver State Medical University | Tver | ₹4.9 lakh (2026/27 order, English-use) | 17.2% |
ASMU's English-line fee is close to Perm's and about ₹0.9 lakh a year below Voronezh and Tver, and its FMGE result is higher than Voronezh's and Tver's but lower than Perm's. Its drawbacks are the remote location, the distance from Kerala and the fact that the fee table carries no order number.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
ASMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. For Kerala families, documents such as the degree certificate are attested by the MEA and, in Kerala, through NORKA Roots.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| University admission table: about ₹4.0 lakh for the first year on the English line, about ₹24 lakh over six years as an estimate | The table shows no order number; agents still quote ₹3.4 to ₹4.3 lakh, which confuses families |
| State medical university under the Ministry of Health, founded in 1954 | English track began in 2023; English for all six years not confirmed |
| FMGE results above the Russian average in 2022 and 2023 | Below the average in 2024 and December 2025; 23.7% combined |
| Far from the Ukrainian border | Remote Siberian city; flights from Kerala take a full day or more |
| Barnaul airport operating, 4.2 hours from Moscow | Very cold winters; hostel fee is only an agent figure |

The Russian-language line is 282,700 roubles. Agents quote 301,775 or 380,000 roubles, which are older or different figures. Ask ASMU to confirm the fee for your intake and keep a reserve for yearly increases.
What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Altai State Medical University?
Foreign students are normally housed in university residences with shared rooms and common kitchens. Agents quote 80,000 to 90,000 roubles a year for the hostel, but the university has not published a figure we could verify. Ask for the fee and the girls hostel arrangements in writing.

You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: in 2026 that was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144 and 113 in 2025). We found no higher ASMU cut-off, and no published entrance exam; ask whether an interview is held.
Does MBBS at Altai State Medical University meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?
ASMU lists an English-medium General Medicine track, introduced in 2023, and a separate bilingual track. We found no written statement that clinical years are fully in English. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university, so ask ASMU to confirm each point in writing.
Are there students from Kerala at Altai State Medical University, and is Indian food available in Barnaul?
We found no official count of Indian students at ASMU and no verified information on Indian groceries in Barnaul. Most Indian students cook in the hostel kitchen. Ask the university how many Indian students are in the English-medium group, and we can help you reach families whose children are already there.
