Kabardino-Balkarian State University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU) in Nalchik has taught Indian students in English since 2017, and agents quote about 245,500 roubles (₹2.8 lakh) for the first year. Its FMGE record is close to the Russian average, but the university has not published a fee we could read, and Nalchik is in the North Caucasus, so the safety section matters.

In short: Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU) is a state university in Nalchik, in the North Caucasus, with a medical faculty that has taught Indian students in English since 2017. Agents quote about 245,500 roubles (₹2.8 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine; we could not read the university's own price list for foreigners, so confirm the fee in writing. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 25.5% of 1,024 candidates, about equal to the Russian average of 25%. The university does not say whether all six years are in English, and Nalchik needs a careful look at the current travel advisory.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov, shortened to KBSU or KBGU, is a federal state university in Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in the foothills of the Caucasus. Wikipedia gives its founding year as 1957, while the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) says the medical school opened in 1966. It is a classical university, not a stand-alone medical institute: medicine is taught in its medical faculty, also called the Medical Academy, next to other faculties. It is a state institution, so it is not a private college. Searches for Kabardino-Balkarian State Medical University, KBSU Nalchik or KBGU all lead to the same place; check that the name on your admission letter is Kabardino-Balkarian State University.

According to the university, English-medium teaching of Indian and Egyptian students began in 2017. On 1 October 2017, 207 students from India started General Medicine in English, and another page of the English site lists 234 students from India (undated). The university also says that 630 students now study in English. These are the only figures we found; there is no published number of students from Kerala. The programme is therefore several years old, but we cannot say how large the Indian community is today.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University fees for Indian students

KBSU publishes a separate price list called "English-medium Specialist degree program for international students", and a list for "specialist programmes with English included" from 2026-27. We could not open the numbers inside these files from our side. The fee therefore comes from agents, and we label it that way. Careers360, an Indian education portal, published a table in 2025 with tuition of 245,500 roubles for the first year, about ₹2.8 lakh at today's rate, marked "subject to variation". Another agent quotes ₹3.24 lakh a year for 2025-26. The two figures differ by about ₹0.5 lakh, which is a reason to ask the university itself.

Do not mix this with other KBSU figures you may find online. An archived 2025 price list for citizens of Russia shows 239,600 roubles for General Medicine, but that is the list for Russians, not the price for an Indian student. The 2018-19 foreign-student list (165,000 roubles) is obsolete.

Tuition, 6 years (agent figure)₹16.7 lakh

So in rupees, the KBSU fee structure works out to roughly ₹2.8 lakh a year in tuition, or about ₹17 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. That is among the lowest tuition in our list, in the same range as Kursk and Stavropol. Plan with a reserve of 10–20% for fee increases and for the rouble-rupee rate, and ask the university whether the fee in your contract is fixed for the whole course. The first-year amount quoted by agents may also not include extras such as the visa, insurance and the registration fee.

Living cost in Nalchik

Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Nalchik is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. Nalchik is a city of about 247,000 people, much smaller than Moscow or Saint Petersburg. We have no verified monthly figure, so we do not give one. Ask senior Indian students at KBSU for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget.

KBSU hostel and hostel fees

An agent table lists a hostel fee of 8,500 roubles for the first year, about ₹9,600, and another agent says about ₹16,000 a year. The first figure does not say whether it is per month, per semester or per year, and neither comes from the university, so treat both as indicative. Ask the international office, in writing, for the fee, the type of room, how many students share it, the kitchen arrangements and the distance to the lecture halls and the teaching hospitals.

Families also ask about a girls hostel at Kabardino-Balkarian State University. Russian university residences usually allocate rooms or floors by gender, but the rules differ from one building to another. Ask how female students are placed, who controls the entrance and what rules apply after a certain hour. In a region with a travel advisory to check (see the safety section), these answers carry more weight than the room rent.

NEET cut-off and eligibility for KBSU

KBSU does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score in the sources we found. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

The admission pages say that English-language programmes do not need the preparatory faculty. We have not confirmed whether KBSU holds an entrance exam or interview for Indian applicants, and there is no published acceptance rate. Ask for the list of requirements and the deadline for your intake. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

Admission process at Kabardino-Balkarian State University

  1. Apply

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the KBSU international office, directly or through us.

  2. Admission letter and contract

The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter and a contract. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction in every year, the internship and the hostel.

  3. Invitation and visa

KBSU applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Nalchik

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Nalchik after you have checked the route and the advisory. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.

Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University ranking and recognition

Families search for the KBSU ranking, its world ranking and its Russia ranking. We found no global ranking for the university's medical programme in the sources we checked, and we quote none. The only ranking we can give is our own, based on FMGE results (see below): KBSU is 12th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in 2022–2025. Three things matter more than a ranking:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask KBSU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. KBSU is listed in WDOMS. Open the entry yourself and read the details, including the language of instruction, which WDOMS gives as Russian in a generic way.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

On English medium, KBSU lists General Medicine 31.05.01 as a separate six-year English-medium programme on its English site and publishes the price list "with English included". The wording does not say whether the clinical years are also in English or whether Russian is introduced for work with patients. We therefore cannot confirm full English for NMC purposes. Ask for a written statement for each year, including hospital practice.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University FMGE passing percentage

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. KBSU's earlier numbers are tiny: 2, 3 and 1 candidates in 2020, 2021 and 2022, none of whom passed. Meaningful numbers start in 2023. In 2023, 19.5% passed (33 of 169) against a Russian average of 19.4%. In 2024, 26.5% passed (105 of 396) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 20.0% passed (38 of 190) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 31.7% passed (85 of 268) against 30.9%.

Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

Over 2022–2025 combined, KBSU passed 25.5% of 1,024 candidates, against about 25% for all Russian universities, and ranks 12th of 24 in our ranking. In three of the four sessions since 2023 it was at or above the Russian average, in one it was three points below. That is an average record at a low fee, not a strong or a weak one. The sample is now large enough to take seriously. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare KBSU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.

Safety in Nalchik: North Caucasus, flights and the advisory

Check before you decide. Nalchik is the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, in the North Caucasus, about 1,430 km from Moscow in a straight line. The Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions take precautions and relocate temporarily. That advisory names other regions. We know of no advisory that names Kabardino-Balkaria, but advisories change, so read the current text at mea.gov.in and on the Embassy website before you decide and again before every trip.

We found no published report of harm to KBSU students and no incident involving Indian students in the sources we checked. What we do know from airport sources is that Nalchik International Airport is operating, but it has had short flight restrictions from the aviation authority Rosaviatsia, for example in December 2025, and on 8 May 2026 flights resumed the same day. A student who arrives or leaves at such a moment can be delayed. What we suggest for any family considering KBSU:

  • Ask the university what security the residence has: guards, entry control, cameras, rules for visitors.
  • Ask how many Indian students are in Nalchik now and let them tell you about daily life, preferably students from Kerala.
  • Check that the insurance covers emergency treatment, evacuation and return to India.
  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone. Parents should keep copies of the passport, visa and admission letter.
  • Do not book a non-refundable ticket before you know that the route works.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

The low fee is not a reason to accept a risk the family is not comfortable with. If you are in doubt, choose a university in a region without an advisory; our universities page lists many.

Life in Nalchik for Kerala students

Nalchik has about 247,000 people (2021 census) and sits in the foothills of the Caucasus. By the same census, Kabardians are 52.8% of the population, Russians 22.8% and Balkars 18.2%, so the city is multi-ethnic. The climate is milder than in the Urals or Siberia: the January mean is about −1.8 °C and the July mean about 23.0 °C. You still need a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear, but not the −30 °C clothing that Siberia demands.

We have no verified information on Indian grocery shops or a Malayali community in Nalchik, so we do not describe them. With 207 Indian students starting in one year (2017), there is a student community, though we cannot say how large it is today. Indian students in Russia commonly cook in hostel kitchens. Ask the international office to put you in touch with a current student before you pay a fee.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University is in Nalchik; the address on file is Chernyshevskogo street 173, 360004. The distance from Nalchik to Moscow is about 1,430 km in a straight line: about 3.2 hours by air or 24–26 hours by train. The nearest airport is Nalchik International Airport (NAL), which is operating but subject to short restrictions, as noted above. Nalchik is on Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Nalchik or a long train ride. See the universities page for the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no KBSU scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. We did not find the KBSU curriculum online. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask KBSU for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The basic sciences come first, then clinical subjects, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The only programme we can confirm for this page is General Medicine; the university has other faculties that we have not checked.

KBSU compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting KBSU usually compare it with other low-fee universities. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

KBSU has a better FMGE record than Kursk and Stavropol at almost the same fee, and a lower fee than Perm at a slightly lower pass rate. Kursk and Stavropol, like Nalchik, need a safety check of their own, and Perm does not. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

KBSU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. A combined FMGE rate of 25.5% still means about three in four candidates did not pass, so start preparing from the first year.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MBBS fee at Kabardino-Balkarian State University for Indian students?

Agents quote 245,500 roubles for the first year of General Medicine, about ₹2.8 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026, or about ₹17 lakh over six years if the fee did not change. We could not read the university's own price list for foreigners, so confirm the fee for your group in writing. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.

What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Kabardino-Balkarian State University?

Agents list a hostel fee of 8,500 roubles for the first year (about ₹9,600, period not clear) or about ₹16,000 a year; neither figure comes from the university. Ask the international office for the fee, room type, kitchen and security in writing.

What NEET score is required for admission to Kabardino-Balkarian State University?

You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: in 2026 that was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144 and 113 in 2025). We found no higher cut-off published by KBSU. Ask the international office about any entrance test or interview.

Does MBBS at Kabardino-Balkarian State University meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?

KBSU lists General Medicine as a six-year English-medium programme, but it does not state that all six years, including hospital practice, are in English. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university. Ask KBSU for written confirmation of each point.

Are there students from Kerala at Kabardino-Balkarian State University, and is Indian food available in Nalchik?

KBSU says 207 students from India started General Medicine in English in 2017, but we found no figure for Kerala and no verified information on Indian groceries in Nalchik. Indian students usually cook in hostel kitchens. Ask the international office to connect you with a current Malayali student before you decide.
