Kursk State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) is a public medical university founded in 1935 in Kursk, a region on the border with Ukraine. Its 2025-26 price list gives 240,000 roubles for the first year, about ₹2.7 lakh, but it is a general list for all students and not clearly the English track. In August 2024 the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised Indians in the Kursk region to take precautions, so read the safety section before you decide.
In short: Kursk State Medical University is a public medical university founded in 1935 in a Russian region that borders Ukraine. The 2025-26 price list gives 240,000 roubles for the first year of General Medicine (about ₹2.7 lakh), but it is a list for all students, not clearly the English-medium fee. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at 21.6% of 1,706 candidates, below the Russian average of about 25%. The university does not state English for all six years in the sources we found. In August 2024 the Indian Embassy advised Indians in the Kursk region to take precautions; check mea.gov.in before any decision.

Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) is a federal state budgetary institution of higher education: a public university under the Ministry of Health. Wikipedia gives its founding year as 1935. It is in Kursk, and the address on the official site is K. Marksa street 3, Kursk 305041. Searches for Kursk Medical University, KSMU Kursk, Kursk State University or Kursk University Russia usually lead to the same place, but check the full name on your admission letter: it should read Kursk State Medical University.

The university has an International Medical Institute and a programme for "export of educational services". According to an official page, 46 countries were represented among its students in 2020. We found no published number of Indian students or of students from Kerala, and we found no official page that states the language of instruction for General Medicine. That second point matters for NMC rules and is covered below. Published information on this university is thinner than for most, and the region it is in makes the safety section the most important one.

Border region. Kursk is a region on the border with Ukraine, about 460 km from Moscow in a straight line. In August 2024 the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions to take precautions and to relocate temporarily. The advisory followed the Ukrainian cross-border offensive into the Kursk region that began on 6 August 2024. Russia said in April 2025 that it had pushed Ukrainian forces out of the region, but the region, like other border areas, has continued to face drone attacks. We know of no published report of KSMU students being harmed. Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in and on the Indian Embassy in Moscow website before you decide, and again before each trip.
We cannot tell you that Kursk is safe, and we cannot tell you that it is unsafe. We can tell you what the facts are and what to ask.
- The advisory is aimed at exactly this region. It names Kursk. Whether it has been withdrawn, repeated or changed is something only the MEA and the Embassy can tell you. Read the latest text yourself, not a summary from an agent.
- The course must stay in one place. The NMC rules require in-person clinical training and the whole course in one institution, finished within 10 years. If students are moved to another city or taught online for a long period, the degree may fail to meet the NMC conditions. Ask the university in writing what it does if the situation worsens, and whether the clinical training can be moved without breaking the rules.
- Ask about practical arrangements. How many Indian students are in Kursk now? Are classes held in person? Which shelter and warning arrangements do the hostel and the university have? Who is the contact person for parents at the university, and how does the university tell families about an emergency?
- Check insurance. Medical insurance is compulsory for foreign students. Ask whether the policy covers emergency treatment, evacuation and return to India, and whether it excludes events connected with military action.
- Check the route. Ask the university which airport and which train route its international students now use to reach Kursk. Do not book a non-refundable ticket before you know that the route works.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone. Parents should keep copies of the passport, visa and admission letter.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.
The low fee is not a reason to accept a risk that the family is not comfortable with. If you are in doubt, you can choose a university in a region without an advisory; our universities page lists many others. Questions about Kursk also appear on forums and social media, with answers from people who may not be there now. A parent's decision should rest on the Embassy and on written answers from the university.

Kursk State Medical University fees for Indian students
KSMU publishes a price list in roubles. The one we found is "Price list of tuition fees for the 2025-2026 academic year", approved by the academic council on 23 June 2025 and effective from 1 September 2025. It gives tuition for General Medicine (31.05.01) of 240,000 roubles in the first year. It is a general price list for all fee-paying students. It is not a separate list for foreigners or for an English-medium group, so the real fee for an Indian student in an English group may differ. We could not find an official fee page for the English track. Treat the figure as the university's published price list, not as a quotation for your admission.
KSMU fee structure 2025-26
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹16.3 lakh |
The table above multiplies the first-year fee by six. The same list gives lower prices for the second to sixth years (236,720, 202,390 and 172,680 roubles), but those are the 2025-26 prices for students who were admitted in earlier years, at the fees of their own intake. They do not show what a student admitted now will pay in later years, so do not add them up as a six-year cost. Ask KSMU whether the fee in your contract is fixed for the whole course or indexed every year.
So the KSMU fee structure for 2025-26, in rupees, is about ₹2.7 lakh in the first year and about ₹16 lakh over six years at today's fee. Russian universities usually change the list each year, and an English track may be priced differently, so plan with a reserve of 10–20% and ask for the fee of your group in writing. The Kursk State Medical University fees for Indian students and for international students should be stated in the admission contract, not only on a general list.
| Cost item | What we know for KSMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year | 240,000 RUB (official general price list, 2025-26) |
| Hostel | Not found; ask the international office |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask what it covers (see safety) |
| Food and daily costs | Depend on how much you cook; not verified for Kursk |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then onward to Kursk; confirm the route first |
Compare KSMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. The fee is among the lower ones in our list, in the same range as Stavropol and Kabardino-Balkarian State University. See the comparison below.
Living cost in Kursk
Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. We have no verified monthly figures for Kursk, so we give no amount. Ask senior Indian students at KSMU for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget, and ask whether prices there have changed recently.
KSMU hostel and hostel fees
We found no hostel fee and no official hostel description for foreign students at KSMU. We therefore cannot say what a Kursk State Medical University hostel costs, how many students share a room or whether foreign students are placed in the university's own dormitories. Ask the international office, in writing, for the fee, the room type, the kitchen arrangements, the distance to the classes and the security, and whether the place is kept for all six years. Ask also what shelter and warning arrangements the hostel has (see the safety section).
Families also ask about a girls hostel at KSMU. Russian university residences usually allocate rooms or floors by gender, but the rules differ. Ask how female students are placed and what security there is at the entrance.
NEET cut-off and eligibility for KSMU
KSMU does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score in the sources we found. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
The university has an applicant section for international students on its site, but we could not read the Kursk State Medical University entry requirements from it. We have not confirmed whether it holds an entrance exam or an interview, and we have no acceptance rate. Ask for the list of requirements, the application form and the deadline for your intake. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

Invitation and visa
KSMU applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Kursk
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then onward to Kursk after you have confirmed the route and checked the MEA advisory. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.
Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Kursk State Medical University ranking and recognition
Families search for the Kursk State Medical University world ranking, QS world ranking and Russia ranking. We have not confirmed a QS or other world ranking for KSMU, so we do not quote one. The only ranking we can give is our own, based on FMGE results (see below): KSMU is 16th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in 2022–2025. A ranking says little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask KSMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. We have not confirmed KSMU's WDOMS listing. Check it yourself.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
On English-medium study, KSMU does not state English for all six years in any official page we found. We know that the university has an International Medical Institute that teaches foreign students, but not in which language. Get a written statement that your group is taught in English for the full course, including the clinical years, before you pay anything.
Kursk State Medical University FMGE passing percentage
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. KSMU has many candidates, so its record is a fair picture. Its graduates were above the Russian average in 2020 and June 2025 and below it in the other five sessions. In 2020, 18.4% passed (58 of 315) against a Russian average of 16.0%; in 2021, 23.4% (68 of 291) against 24.8%; in 2022, 24.7% (83 of 336) against 26.0%; in 2023, 16.5% (61 of 370) against 19.4%; in 2024, 22.3% (109 of 489) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 20.2% passed (50 of 247) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 25.0% (66 of 264) against 30.9%.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 264 | 66 | 25.0% |
| June 2025 | 247 | 50 | 20.2% |
| 2024 | 489 | 109 | 22.3% |
| 2023 | 370 | 61 | 16.5% |
| 2022 | 336 | 83 | 24.7% |
| 2021 | 291 | 68 | 23.4% |
| 2020 | 315 | 58 | 18.4% |
Over 2022–2025 combined, 21.6% of 1,706 candidates passed, against about 25% for all Russian universities. That places KSMU 16th among the 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking. This is not a bad result for a low fee, but it is below average, and the lower fee does not remove the need to prepare for FMGE from the first year. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare KSMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.

Life in Kursk for Kerala students
Kursk is a regional city in central-southern European Russia, about 460 km from Moscow in a straight line. Moscow time applies, which is two and a half hours behind India. We have no verified information on climate, Indian food or an Indian community in Kursk, so we do not describe them. The Russian winter is long and cold in most of the country, so plan for a proper jacket, boots and thermal wear in the first year.
Before you pay a fee, ask the university or your counsellor to put you in touch with current Indian students at KSMU, preferably from Kerala, and ask them about the hostel, food, costs, the lessons in English and what daily life is like in the current situation. Students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better in hospitals.
Where KSMU is: Kursk, distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
The Kursk State Medical University location is Kursk, at K. Marksa street 3 according to the official site; the distance from Kursk to Moscow is about 460 km in a straight line. The map above shows the city. We did not verify which airport or railway station serves Kursk today, and in border regions the schedules of flights and trains can be changed at short notice. Ask the university which route its international students use now, and check the timetable and the advisory before you buy a ticket.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then onward by the route that the university confirms. Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. See the universities page for the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no KSMU scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. We did not find the KSMU syllabus online. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask KSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients. The only course we can confirm for this page is General Medicine; the university has other programmes that we have not checked.
KSMU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting KSMU usually compare it with other low-fee universities. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kursk State Medical University | Kursk | ₹2.7 lakh (general list) | 21.6% |
| Stavropol State Medical University | Stavropol | ₹2.7 lakh | 13.0% |
| Kabardino-Balkarian State University | Nalchik | ₹2.8 lakh (agent figure) | 25.5% |
| Perm State Medical University | Perm | ₹4.1 lakh (order, English, 2025-26) | 27.7% |
At a similar fee, Kabardino-Balkarian has had better FMGE results than KSMU, and Stavropol has had a lower one; Perm costs about ₹1.4 lakh a year more on its 2025-26 order and has had better results too. Two of the others (Stavropol and Nalchik) are in the North Caucasus, which needs its own safety check; Perm is not on the border or in the Caucasus. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
KSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. KSMU's combined FMGE rate of 21.6% means that about four of five candidates did not pass at the first attempt, so start preparing early and budget for coaching.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Published tuition of about ₹2.7 lakh a year, among the lower ones in our list | The price list is general, not an English-track list; the real fee may differ |
| Public university under the Ministry of Health, with an International Medical Institute | English for all six years is not stated in the sources we found |
| Large FMGE sample (1,706 candidates), so the record is reliable | Combined FMGE of 21.6%, below the Russian average, 16th of 24 |
| About 460 km from Moscow, close by Russian standards | Border region with an Embassy precaution advisory of August 2024 |
| Moscow time, two and a half hours behind India | Hostel fee and Indian student numbers not found; the route to Kursk must be confirmed |

Kursk State Medical University: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MBBS fee at Kursk State Medical University for Indian students?
The university's price list for 2025-26 gives 240,000 roubles for the first year of General Medicine, about ₹2.7 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026, or about ₹16 lakh over six years at that fee. It is a general list for all students, not clearly the English-medium fee, so confirm the fee for your group in writing. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.
What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Kursk State Medical University?
We found no hostel fee and no official hostel description for foreign students at KSMU. Ask the international office in writing for the fee, the room type and the security, and ask what shelter and warning arrangements exist, given that Kursk is a border region.
What NEET score is required for admission to Kursk State Medical University?
You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: for the 2026 intake that is 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (in 2025 it was 144 and 113; the marks rose in 2026 after the exam was re-held). We did not find a higher cut-off published by KSMU. Ask the international office for the entry requirements and any entrance test.
Does MBBS at Kursk State Medical University meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?
We could not find an official page that states English for all six years of General Medicine at KSMU. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study, in-person clinical training and a 12-month internship at the same university. Ask KSMU for written confirmation that your group meets each of these conditions.
Is it safe to study at Kursk State Medical University given the situation in the Kursk region?
Kursk is a border region. In August 2024, after Ukrainian forces crossed into the Kursk region, the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions to take precautions and relocate temporarily. Russia said in April 2025 that the incursion had been pushed back, but drone attacks on border regions continue. Check mea.gov.in, ask the university about shelter, insurance and what happens to your course if it is moved, and decide only after you have written answers.
