Mari State University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Mari State University (MarSU) in Yoshkar-Ola is a classical university whose Medical Institute teaches General Medicine to foreign students. Its Indian graduates passed FMGE at a combined 28.2% over 2022–2025, above the Russian average of about 25%, but we found no official fee list, so the fees below are agent figures that you must confirm.
In short: Mari State University is a state university in Yoshkar-Ola whose Medical Institute teaches MBBS-equivalent General Medicine. We found no official price list: agents quote about USD 5,000 a year (about ₹4.8 lakh) or USD 5,500 with the hostel included, so get the current fee from the university. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 28.2% of 2,586 candidates, seventh of the 24 universities in our ranking and above the Russian average of about 25%. No official source we found states English for all six years, so ask for it in writing.

Mari State University (MarSU) is a classical university: it teaches many subjects, and medicine is taught in its Medical Institute. This matters when you search, because the name on the admission letter should be Mari State University with the Medical Institute named in the programme. It is a state university, a federal state budgetary institution of higher education, in Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of the Mari El Republic in the Volga region. The address is Lenin Square 1. The official website is marsu.ru, with an English version at marsu.ru/en/.

We use 1972 as the year when the university was established, which is the year given in Russian Wikipedia; English Wikipedia and one agent page say 1949, so ask the university which date it uses. In 2008 the Mari State Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya was absorbed into it; this was a merger, not a rename. We found no official count of Indian students. The FMGE tables below show that a large number of Indian graduates sit the exam every year (930 candidates in 2024), but that is not a student count. Ask the international office how many Indian students and how many from Kerala study there now.

Mari State University fees for Indian students
Here we have to be careful. We could not find an official MarSU price list for foreign medical students, and the agent figures disagree. selectyouruniversity gives tuition of USD 5,000 a year. rmcedu gives USD 5,500 a year for years 1 to 6, with tuition and hostel together and not split, USD 33,000 in total. Neither figure comes from the university. Agents quote different figures, so the student must get the official current fee list from the university's international office before paying anything or planning a budget.
MarSU fee structure 2026-27
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years (agent figure) | ₹28.5 lakh |
For planning only: USD 5,000 a year is roughly ₹4.8 lakh at today's exchange rate, or about ₹29 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. The rmcedu figure of USD 5,500 a year with the hostel is roughly ₹5.2 lakh a year, or about ₹31 lakh over six years. The first agent figure is for tuition alone and the second includes accommodation, so the two cannot be compared directly. Russian universities usually set fees in roubles and raise them from time to time, so ask in which currency the contract is written, keep a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the exchange rate, and ask whether tuition is paid per year or per semester.
| Cost item | What we know for MarSU |
|---|---|
| Tuition | No official price found; agents quote USD 5,000 a year |
| Tuition with hostel | One agent quotes USD 5,500 a year combined, years 1 to 6 |
| Hostel | No separate figure found; ask the international office |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask whether it is in the contract |
| Food | Most students cook in hostel kitchens; ask senior students for their real spend |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Yoshkar-Ola |
Compare MarSU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. On the agent figure it sits at the higher end of the universities we compare it with below, so the question is whether the extra fee buys anything. Families from Kerala also compare Russian fees with what a Kerala college would cost on their NEET rank; ask us for both numbers side by side.
Living cost in Yoshkar-Ola
Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel kitchen), a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. We have no verified monthly figure for Yoshkar-Ola and will not invent one. It is a smaller city than Moscow or Kazan, so ask senior Indian students for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget.
Hostel and hostel fees
We found no verified information on the MarSU hostel: no fee, no room type and no rule on who lives where. The only related figure is the rmcedu price of USD 5,500 a year that bundles tuition and hostel together. At Russian state universities foreign students usually live in student residences in shared rooms with common kitchens, but do not assume it, and ask the international office in writing for:
- the hostel fee per year and how it is paid;
- whether a first-year foreign student is sure to get a place in a residence or must find a flat;
- how far the residence is from the Medical Institute;
- how rooms are allocated for girls (the girls hostel question is the one parents ask most), what security there is at the entrance, and how well the rooms are heated in winter.
NEET cut-off and eligibility
MarSU does not publish a NEET cut-off of its own that we could find. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
We found no published entrance exam or acceptance rate for foreign applicants. Ask whether there is an entrance test or interview and what it covers. Students who meet the eligibility criteria and apply on time are usually admitted at Russian state universities, but the real filter is FMGE six years later, so a student with a weak NEET score should think hard about the exam ahead. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at Mari State University
Apply online
Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international office, directly or through us.
Admission letter and contract
The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, its currency, the language of instruction and the internship, and check that the Medical Institute and General Medicine are named.
Invitation and visa
The university arranges your study invitation. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Yoshkar-Ola
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then travel on to Yoshkar-Ola. Ask the international office how it meets new students and who completes the migration registration.
We do not have the intake date for MarSU, so ask for it in writing. Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Ranking and recognition
Families often search for the Mari State University ranking. We found no ranking for MarSU, and we have not found its Medical Institute in the main global rankings. Russian national ratings change their methods often and say little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask MarSU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. We could not confirm the listing of the university in WDOMS. Check it yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
FMGE passing percentage of Mari State University
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. MarSU graduates have beaten the Russian average in every session since 2022. In 2022, 31.1% passed (41 of 132) against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 21.0% (109 of 520) against 19.4%; in 2024, 31.4% (292 of 930) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 19.7% passed (72 of 365) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 33.8% (216 of 639) against 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, MarSU passed 28.2% of 2,586 candidates, seventh among the 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 639 | 216 | 33.8% |
| June 2025 | 365 | 72 | 19.7% |
| 2024 | 930 | 292 | 31.4% |
| 2023 | 520 | 109 | 21.0% |
| 2022 | 132 | 41 | 31.1% |
The gap above the average is between 1.6 and 5 percentage points in each session, and the numbers of candidates are large, so this is a steadier result than for a university with a few dozen candidates. It also means that about seven in ten candidates still failed on the first attempt, as at most Russian universities. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare MarSU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.
Safety in Yoshkar-Ola for Indian students
Yoshkar-Ola, 640 km from Moscow in the Volga region, is not one of the border regions and not in the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at MarSU. Practical safety is about the usual care of a student living abroad, and a few points are worth asking about:
- Ask what security the residence has: guards, entry control, cameras.
- Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival.
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel; Russia-related advisories change.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Yoshkar-Ola for Kerala students
Yoshkar-Ola is the capital of the Mari El Republic, a regional city in the Volga region. We have no city-specific climate note or verified information on Indian food, Indian shops or the number of Kerala students there. The Volga region has cold winters, so plan for proper winter clothing in the first year and ask senior students where and when to buy it.
Ask the international office to connect you with current Indian students, and ask them: is there a Malayali group, do students cook in the hostel kitchen, where do they buy rice and spices, what do the first months cost. Our counsellors speak Malayalam and can arrange this call from the Kakkanad office. Given that hundreds of MarSU graduates sit FMGE each year, a student from Kerala is unlikely to be the first, but that is an inference, not a count.
Where Mari State University is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
Mari State University is in Yoshkar-Ola, in the Mari El Republic. The distance from Yoshkar-Ola to Moscow is about 640 km in a straight line, and the city is in the Moscow time zone. We do not have a verified name of the nearest airport or a transfer plan from the university, so ask the international office how students usually arrive and where it meets them.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight or a train to the city. Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. Yoshkar-Ola time is two and a half hours behind India. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no MarSU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the Medical Institute for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The course we describe here is General Medicine; we have not verified other programmes for foreigners.
MarSU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting MarSU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses the yearly tuition in rupees and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mari State University | Yoshkar-Ola | ₹4.8 lakh (agent figure) | 28.2% |
| Belgorod State National Research University | Belgorod | ₹4.6 lakh | 12.1% |
| Penza State University | Penza | ₹4.4 lakh | 30.2% |
| Dagestan State Medical University | Makhachkala | ₹4.8 lakh (price order, English, 2026-27) | 11.7% |
Of the four, MarSU has the highest fee together with Dagestan (₹4.8 lakh each; MarSU's is an agent figure), and its FMGE result is far above Belgorod and Dagestan and slightly below Penza, which costs less. Belgorod and Makhachkala are also regions where the safety situation needs a separate look; see their pages. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
MarSU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India.

Get the current official fee list from the university before you pay anything. Hostel, food, insurance and flights may be extra.
What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Mari State University?
We have no verified information on the MarSU hostel. Ask the international office in writing for the hostel fee, whether a place in the first year is certain, how rooms are allocated for girls and what security the residence has.
What NEET score is required for admission to Mari State University?
You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: for the 2026 intake that is 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (in 2025 it was 144 and 113; the marks rose in 2026 after the exam was re-held). No official statement on the language of instruction was found; agents say English, which we could not verify. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university. Ask MarSU for written confirmation of each condition.
Are there students from Kerala at Mari State University, and is Indian food available in Yoshkar-Ola?
We have no verified count of Indian students or of students from Kerala, and no verified information on Indian food in Yoshkar-Ola. The large numbers of FMGE candidates suggest that many Indian students have studied there. Ask the international office to put you in touch with current Indian students; we can also arrange a Malayalam-language call.
