North Ossetian State Medical Academy: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
North Ossetian State Medical Academy (SOGMA) in Vladikavkaz, also searched as North Ossetian State Medical University, lists 360,000 roubles (about ₹4.1 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine in its 2026-27 price order. Only part of the course is in English, and the city is in the North Caucasus, so the language and safety sections matter.
In short: North Ossetian State Medical Academy (SOGMA) is a state medical academy founded in 1939 in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia-Alania. Its price order No. 113/o of 28 April 2026 gives 360,000 roubles (about ₹4.1 lakh) for the first year of General Medicine in 2026-27, but the table does not separate foreigners or an English group. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at 22.4% of 550 candidates, below the Russian average of about 25%. The academy runs a programme taught only partly in English, which cannot be treated as full English for the NMC.

North Ossetian State Medical Academy, known as SOGMA (СОГМА in Russian), is a federal state budgetary institution under the Russian Ministry of Health, so it is a state institution. It was founded in 1939; the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) lists an alternate name, North Ossetian Medical Institute. The address we have is Pushkinskaya street 40, Vladikavkaz; we did not verify the postal code. WDOMS has an entry for the academy.
A naming trap. Many people search for North Ossetian State Medical University or North Ossetian Medical University, and the official name is "Academy". Do not confuse it with North Ossetian State University (NOSU, founded 1920, nosu.ru) in the same city: English Wikipedia even redirects "North Ossetian State Medical Academy" to NOSU. Check that your admission letter names the Academy (SOGMA) and the sogma.ru website. We found no official count of Indian students or of students from Kerala.

North Ossetian State Medical Academy fees for Indian students
SOGMA publishes "Information on the cost of education 2026-2027", based on its order of 28 April 2026 No. 113/o. For the first year of full-time General Medicine 31.05.01 it gives 360,000 roubles, about ₹4.1 lakh at today's rate. The table does not separate foreigners or the English-partial group, so we cannot confirm that this is what an Indian student in an English group will pay. Treat it as the academy's published price for the specialty and ask for the line that applies to your group.
Agents give other figures. One quotes 300,000 roubles for 2025-26 with a hostel of 36,000 roubles a year; an aggregator table shows 360,000 roubles for tuition and 80,000 roubles for the hostel in each of six years. These do not come from the academy.
North Ossetian State Medical Academy fee structure 2026-27
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹24.5 lakh |
So in rupees, the SOGMA fee structure for 2026-27 works out to roughly ₹4.1 lakh a year in tuition, or about ₹24 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. Plan for 10–20% extra for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate; Russian universities usually change their lists each year. The academy's order covers one academic year only, so we cannot give you a fixed six-year path. Ask whether the fee in the contract is fixed.
| Cost item | What we know for SOGMA |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year | 360,000 RUB (price order No. 113/o of 28.04.2026; not split by foreigners or English) |
| Hostel | Fee set by law; agents quote 36,000 or 80,000 RUB a year; no official amount found |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask what it covers |
| Food | Not verified for Vladikavkaz; most students cook in the hostel |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then about 2.9 hours by air; check Beslan airport restrictions |
Compare SOGMA with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At about ₹4.1 lakh it is in the lower middle of our list.
Living cost in Vladikavkaz
Beyond tuition and hostel, a monthly budget in Vladikavkaz is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing. The city has about 296,000 people and we have no verified monthly figure for it, so we do not give one. Ask senior Indian students for their real spend before you fix the family budget.
North Ossetian State Medical Academy hostel and hostel fees
SOGMA says foreign students are placed in the student hostel on the same basis as Russian students, and that the hostel fee is set by law and is not above 5% of the stipend. We found no rouble amount on the pages we could read. Agents quote 36,000 roubles a year (about ₹41,000) in one place and 80,000 roubles a year (about ₹91,000) in another, a gap of more than double, so ask the international office, in writing, for the monthly rate, the type of room, how many students share it, the kitchen and the distance to the clinics.
Families also ask about a girls hostel at the North Ossetian State Medical Academy. Russian residences usually allocate rooms or floors by gender, but the rules differ. Ask how female students are placed, who controls the entrance and what the evening rules are. In the North Caucasus these answers carry extra weight (see the safety section).
NEET cut-off and eligibility for SOGMA
The academy does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score in the sources we found. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
We have not confirmed whether SOGMA holds an entrance exam or interview for Indian applicants, and there is no published acceptance rate. One date matters: the academy's internal rules say the academic year for first-year foreign students on the English-language programme starts on 1 November, not 1 September. Ask for the application deadline for that intake. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

Admission process at North Ossetian State Medical Academy
Apply
Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the academy's international office, directly or through us.
Admission letter and contract
The academy checks the documents and issues an admission letter and a contract. The programme for foreigners is governed by its document on admission to programmes taught partly in English; read the contract for the share of English, the fee line and the internship.
Invitation and visa
SOGMA requests your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Vladikavkaz
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Vladikavkaz after you have checked the route and the advisory. The academy completes your migration registration after arrival.
Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
North Ossetian State Medical Academy ranking and recognition
Families search for the North Ossetian State Medical Academy ranking in Russia and its world ranking. We found no global ranking and no national rating we could verify, so we quote none. The only ranking we can give is our own, based on FMGE results (see below): SOGMA is 15th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in 2022–2025. Three things matter more than a ranking:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. SOGMA is listed in WDOMS. Open the entry yourself and read it.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
On English medium, the position is clear and not favourable. The academy's own document concerns admission to programmes "implemented partly in a foreign (English) language" for General Medicine, Paediatrics and Pharmacy, and its education page lists the language as "partly English". With only part of the course in English, it cannot be treated as the full-English course that the NMC rules require. Ask the academy in writing which subjects and years are in English, and do not sign until the answer is clear.
North Ossetian State Medical Academy FMGE passing percentage
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. SOGMA's record is mixed. In 2021 one candidate sat and did not pass. In 2022, 29.7% passed (11 of 37) against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 11.1% (11 of 99) against 19.4%; in 2024, 27.1% (51 of 188) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 19.5% passed (17 of 87) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 23.7% (33 of 139) against 30.9%.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 139 | 33 | 23.7% |
| June 2025 | 87 | 17 | 19.5% |
| 2024 | 188 | 51 | 27.1% |
| 2023 | 99 | 11 | 11.1% |
| 2022 | 37 | 11 | 29.7% |
| 2021 | 1 | 0 | 0.0% |
Over 2022–2025 combined, SOGMA passed 22.4% of 550 candidates, against about 25% for all Russian universities, and ranks 15th of 24 in our ranking. It was above the Russian average in two sessions and below it in three. The result is a little below average, with a sample that is now large enough to be meaningful. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare all universities on the FMGE pass rate page.
Safety in Vladikavkaz: North Caucasus, flights and the advisory
Check before you decide. Vladikavkaz is the capital of North Ossetia-Alania, in the North Caucasus, about 1,500 km from Moscow in a straight line. The Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions take precautions and relocate temporarily. That advisory names other regions; we know of no advisory that names North Ossetia, but advisories change. Read the current text at mea.gov.in and on the Embassy website before you decide and before every trip.
We found no published report of harm to SOGMA students and no reported incident involving Indian students there. According to Wikipedia, Beslan Airport, the airport for Vladikavkaz, is operating but has had repeated short flight restrictions from the aviation authority Rosaviatsia, for example on 21 January and 30 March 2026. A student who travels at such a moment can be delayed. What we suggest for any family considering SOGMA:
- Ask what security the hostel has: guards, entry control, cameras, rules for visitors.
- Ask how many Indian students are in Vladikavkaz now and talk to one, preferably from Kerala.
- Check that the insurance covers emergency treatment, evacuation and return to India.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone. Parents should keep copies of the passport, visa and admission letter.
- Do not book a non-refundable ticket until the route works.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.
If the family is not comfortable with the risk, choose a university in a region without an advisory; our universities page lists many.

Life in Vladikavkaz for Kerala students
Vladikavkaz had 295,830 people at the 2021 census. By the same census, Ossetians are 69.7% of the population and Russians 22.0%. The climate is mild for Russia: the January mean is about −1.7 °C and the July mean about 21.2 °C. You still need a proper winter jacket and boots, but not the Siberian clothing that other cities demand.
We have no verified information on Indian groceries, Indian restaurants or a Malayali community in Vladikavkaz, so we do not describe them. Students from India usually cook in the hostel kitchen. Ask the international office for the contact of a current Indian student, ideally from Kerala, before you pay.
Where SOGMA is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
The academy is in Vladikavkaz, on Pushkinskaya street. The distance from Vladikavkaz to Moscow is about 1,500 km in a straight line: about 2.9 hours by air, or about 35 hours by train (a travel-guide figure). The nearest airport is Beslan (OGZ), which is operating but subject to restrictions. Vladikavkaz is on Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Beslan. See the universities page for the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no SOGMA scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. We did not read the SOGMA curriculum. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the academy for its own before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
Basic sciences come first, then clinical subjects, then hospital practice. Because only part of the programme is in English, a student here will need working Russian earlier than at a university with full English. The academy's English-partial document lists General Medicine, Paediatrics and Pharmacy; we checked only General Medicine for this page.
SOGMA compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting SOGMA usually compare it with other universities at about ₹4 lakh. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Ossetian State Medical Academy | Vladikavkaz | ₹4.1 lakh | 22.4% |
| Tambov State University | Tambov | ₹4.0 lakh (agent figure) | 27.4% |
| Tver State Medical University | Tver | ₹4.9 lakh (2026/27 order) | 17.2% |
| Northern State Medical University | Arkhangelsk | ₹4.0 lakh | 22.5% |
SOGMA's FMGE rate is almost the same as Northern's and between Tambov's and Tver's. What separates it is the partly-English teaching and the region: none of the other three is in the North Caucasus. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
The academy awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. A combined FMGE rate of 22.4% means more than three in four candidates did not pass, so prepare from the first year and treat the partly-English teaching as a risk to your FMGE preparation, since FMGE is set in English.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 2026-27 price order published: 360,000 RUB (about ₹4.1 lakh) | The order does not split foreigners or the English group |
| State academy under the Ministry of Health, listed in WDOMS | Only partly in English; not a full-English course for NMC purposes |
| FMGE sample of 550 candidates, so the record is reliable | 22.4% combined, below the Russian average, 15th of 24 |
| Mild winter by Russian standards | North Caucasus: advisory and Beslan flight restrictions must be checked each time |
| Fee in the lower middle of our list | Hostel amount not found; English-programme year starts 1 November; no Indian student count |

North Ossetian State Medical Academy: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MBBS fee at North Ossetian State Medical Academy for Indian students?
The academy's 2026-27 price order (No. 113/o of 28 April 2026) gives 360,000 roubles for the first year of General Medicine, about ₹4.1 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. The order covers one academic year only, so there is no fixed six-year total; if the fee never rose it would be about ₹24 lakh, and you should plan for 10–20% more. The table does not separate foreigners or the English group, so confirm the fee for your group in writing. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.
What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at North Ossetian State Medical Academy?
The academy says foreigners are placed in the student hostel on the same basis as Russian students, with a fee set by law and not above 5% of the stipend. We found no rouble amount; agents quote 36,000 to 80,000 roubles a year. Ask for the rate, room type and security in writing.
What NEET score is required for admission to North Ossetian State Medical Academy?
You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: for the 2026 intake that is 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (in 2025 it was 144 and 113; the marks rose in 2026 after the exam was re-held). We found no higher cut-off published by the academy. The English-language year for first-year foreign students starts on 1 November.
Does MBBS at North Ossetian State Medical Academy meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?
The academy teaches foreign students on a programme "partly in English", so it is not a full-English course. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university. Ask for a written list of which subjects and years are in English before you apply.
Are there students from Kerala at North Ossetian State Medical Academy, and is Indian food available in Vladikavkaz?
We found no official count of Indian or Malayali students and no verified information on Indian groceries in Vladikavkaz. Students usually cook in the hostel kitchen. Ask the international office to connect you with a current Indian student before you pay.
