North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, often searched as North Western State Medical University, North Western State Medical University named after II Mechnikov, NWSMU or SZGMU, is a federal state budgetary institution under the Ministry of Health, so it is a public university. By the university's own text it was founded on 12 October 2011 when the Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy named after Mechnikov merged with the Saint Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies; it says its predecessors go back about 125 years. The address on its English contacts page is Kirochnaya street 41, Saint Petersburg 191015.
The English "Facts and Figures" page gives more than 4,500 students, more than 400 foreign students and 64 partner universities in 27 countries. Wikipedia lists 5,000 students without a date. The university's news mentions India-Russia cooperation, but we found no count of Indian students and none for Kerala.

North Western State Medical University fees for Indian students
The university's English fee page lists two separate General Medicine lines for foreign citizens: "General Medicine for foreign citizens (English Medium Instruction)" at 440,000 roubles a year, and Russian-language General Medicine at 348,000 roubles. An Indian student in an English group pays the first. At today's rate 440,000 roubles is about ₹5.0 lakh a year.
The year matters. The latest table on the page is labelled 2024/25, and the page snapshot we read was taken on 19 May 2026 and still showed that table; we did not find a 2025/26 or 2026/27 table. So the figure is the last one the university has published, not a quotation for your intake. Ask the international office for the current price in writing.
North Western State Medical University fee structure 2024/25 (latest published)
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years | ₹29.9 lakh |
| Hostel, 6 years | ₹28.4 lakh |
| Tuition and hostel, 6 years | ₹58.2 lakh |
So in rupees, the NWSMU fee structure works out to roughly ₹5.0 lakh a year in tuition, or about ₹30 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. Add the hostel from the table and the total is about ₹32 lakh before food, insurance, visa and flights. Russian universities usually raise fees every year, so plan with a reserve of 10–20% and for the rouble-rupee rate. Ask whether the fee in the contract is fixed for the whole course.
| Cost item | What we know for NWSMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, first year (English medium) | 440,000 RUB (official fee page, table 2024/25) |
| Tuition, Russian-language track | 348,000 RUB (same table) |
| Hostel | 2,900 RUB a month; 17,400 RUB per semester; 34,800 RUB a year (official hostel page) |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask what it covers |
| Food and daily costs | Saint Petersburg is dearer than most Russian cities; no verified figure |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow or direct to Saint Petersburg via a Gulf hub or Delhi; about 1.5 hours from Moscow by air |
Compare NWSMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. It is in the middle of our list for tuition, but it is in the more expensive group for living costs.
Living cost in Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg is a city of about 5.6 million people, and it is generally dearer than most places where Indian students study. A monthly budget is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport and the metro, study material and winter clothing. We have no verified monthly figure, so we do not give one. Ask senior Indian students at NWSMU for their real spend; rent is not a factor if you take the hostel, but food and eating out add up.
NWSMU hostel and hostel fees
Here the university gives clear numbers. According to its official hostel page (snapshot of January 2026), foreign fee-paying students pay 2,900 roubles a month, which is 17,400 roubles per semester or 34,800 roubles a year, about ₹39,000. Applicants who come for the entrance procedure pay 150 roubles a day. The hostel is at Piskarevsky prospect 47/45. Rooms are arranged in units of 8–9 rooms, with 2–3 persons per room.
Ask the international office how far the Piskarevsky hostel is from the main building at Kirochnaya street and how long the daily trip takes by metro and bus. Families also ask about a girls hostel at the North Western State Medical University. The hostel page we read does not explain how rooms are allocated by gender; ask how female students are placed, who controls the entrance and what the rules are in the evening.
NEET cut-off and eligibility for NWSMU
The university does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score in the sources we found. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
For the English-medium programme, the English site lists entrance tests in English, Chemistry and Biology. We do not know how the tests are held for applicants abroad, and there is no published acceptance rate. Ask for the programme of the tests and the date. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

North-Western State Medical University ranking and recognition
Families search for the North Western State Medical University ranking and its world ranking. We found no global ranking for its medical programme and no national rating we could verify, so we quote none. Our own FMGE-based ranking does not list it either: it had fewer than 300 candidates over 2022–2025, so it is not ranked. Three things matter more than a ranking:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. We could not read the WDOMS entry. Search the directory yourself.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its graduates actually do.
On English medium, this is one of the clearer cases. The English site has a dedicated "Specialist's program in General Medicine (English Medium Instruction – EMI)", 31.05.01, six years, and the fee table treats it as a separate line from the Russian-language course. We did not check the curriculum itself for a statement that the clinical years are also in English, so ask for it in writing, including for hospital practice.
North Western State Medical University FMGE passing percentage
NBEMS publishes FMGE results by institute. The numbers for NWSMU are very low in every session: in 2020, 5.1% passed (6 of 118) against a Russian average of 16.0%; in 2021, 9.1% (9 of 99) against 24.8%; in 2022, none of 79 against 26.0%; in 2023, none of 73 against 19.4%; in 2024, 3.2% (2 of 63) against 29.5%; in June 2025, none of 24 against 18.1%; and in December 2025, 3.1% (1 of 32) against 30.9%.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 32 | 1 | 3.1% |
| June 2025 | 24 | 0 | 0.0% |
| 2024 | 63 | 2 | 3.2% |
| 2023 | 73 | 0 | 0.0% |
| 2022 | 79 | 0 | 0.0% |
| 2021 | 99 | 9 | 9.1% |
| 2020 | 118 | 6 | 5.1% |
Over 2022–2025, 3 of 271 candidates passed, about 1.1%, against about 25% for all Russian universities. With fewer than 300 candidates it is not ranked in our ranking, but the gap is too wide to be chance. One caution: NBEMS lists candidates by institute, not by programme, so we cannot tell how many of these candidates studied in the English-medium programme, in the Russian-language one, or in earlier years. Ask the university for the FMGE record of its own English-medium graduates, with NBEMS score cards. If it cannot show one, assume the figures above apply to you. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare all universities on the FMGE pass rate page.
Safety in Saint Petersburg for Indian students
Saint Petersburg is in the north-west, about 630 km from Moscow, far from the Ukrainian border and from the North Caucasus. The Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions take precautions and relocate temporarily; Saint Petersburg is not named. We found no published incident involving NWSMU students. Advisories can change, so check mea.gov.in before you travel. Practical points for a family:
- Ask about security and entry control at the Piskarevsky hostel and who is on duty at night.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone.
- Check that the insurance covers emergency treatment and return to India.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Saint Petersburg for Kerala students
Saint Petersburg had 5,601,911 people at the 2021 census. The January mean is about −5.0 °C and the July mean about 19.2 °C (Pulkovo airport, 2011–2020); an alternative station gives −5.8 °C and 17.8 °C. That is milder than the Urals or Siberia, but you still need a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear. In summer the White Nights mean the sky never gets fully dark.
The metro, which opened in 1955, makes the daily commute from hostel to university practical. We have no verified information on Indian groceries, Indian restaurants or a Malayali community, so we do not describe them. A city of this size has larger shops and more choice than a regional town, but ask for the contact of a current Indian student, ideally from Kerala, before you pay.
Where NWSMU is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
The main building is at Kirochnaya street 41, Saint Petersburg. The distance from Saint Petersburg to Moscow is about 630 km in a straight line: about 1.5 hours by air, or 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours by the Sapsan high-speed train. The nearest airport is Pulkovo (LED), and it is operating. Saint Petersburg is on Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi to Moscow or Saint Petersburg. See the universities page for the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no NWSMU scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. We did not read the NWSMU curriculum. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the university for its own before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
Basic sciences come first, then clinical subjects, then hospital practice. Patients speak Russian, so students who learn the language in the first two years cope better on the wards. The only programme we can confirm for this page is General Medicine.
NWSMU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting NWSMU usually compare it with other Saint Petersburg universities and with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| North-Western State Medical University | Saint Petersburg | ₹5.0 lakh | 1.1% (271 candidates, not ranked) |
| Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University | Saint Petersburg | ₹5.6 lakh | not ranked (<300 candidates) |
| Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University | Saint Petersburg | ₹7.6 lakh | not ranked (<300 candidates) |
| Mari State University | Yoshkar-Ola | ₹4.8 lakh (agent figure) | 28.2% |
Within Saint Petersburg, NWSMU is the cheapest of the three at the English-medium price, but the city's other two have FMGE samples too small to rank. Mari State University is cheaper and has a combined FMGE rate of 28.2%, against 1.1% for NWSMU. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
The university awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. NWSMU's FMGE numbers mean this step needs the most attention: ask what preparation the university gives for FMGE, and budget for coaching from the fourth year.
