Medical universities in Yoshkar-Ola, Russia
Mari State University is at Lenin Square 1, Yoshkar-Ola. It is a state university whose Medical Institute teaches General Medicine. Russian Wikipedia gives 1972 as the founding year, and English Wikipedia and an agent say 1949, so ask which the university uses. In 2008 it absorbed the Mari State Pedagogical Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya. Indian searches for "Mari State University" run to about 2,400 a month.
FMGE. This is the case for Yoshkar-Ola, and the sample is big enough to trust. MarSU has beaten the Russian average in every session since 2022:
| Session | Candidates | Passed | MarSU | Russian average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 132 | 41 | 31.1% | 26.0% |
| 2023 | 520 | 109 | 21.0% | 19.4% |
| 2024 | 930 | 292 | 31.4% | 29.5% |
| June 2025 | 365 | 72 | 19.7% | 18.1% |
| December 2025 | 639 | 216 | 33.8% | 30.9% |
The margin over the Russian average is between 1.6 and 5.1 points, so MarSU is better than average but not outstanding, and seven in ten candidates still fail in a typical session. A high number of candidates also means that the Indian group at MarSU is large. The student count is still unknown: candidates sitting FMGE are graduates of earlier years.
Fee. We found no official price list. Agent pages quote USD 5,000 a year for tuition (about ₹4.8 lakh at the rate of 15 October 2026) and USD 5,500 a year (about ₹5.2 lakh) with tuition and hostel combined, for all six years. Both are unverified, and a Russian state university sets its price in roubles. Ask the international office for a signed price list in roubles for your intake, the year-by-year fees and what is included. See the fees page for comparison.
Language. One agent says "studies and lectures will be in English only", and another says MBBS in English without being clear. The university has not told us either way, so we cannot confirm English for all six years. NMC rules need at least 54 months in English and a 12-month internship at the same university; ask in writing. See the NMC rules.

Yoshkar-Ola weather for Kerala students
Yoshkar-Ola is in the Volga region. Our figures (1991–2020 normals) give a January mean of −10.5 °C and a July mean of 19.3 °C. That is milder than Siberia, but still a long winter by Kerala standards, and cold spells fall well below the mean. The time zone is Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.

For the first winter, buy a down jacket, insulated boots with grip, a hat, gloves and thermal underwear. Senior students will say where to shop. See the winter packing list.
How to reach Yoshkar-Ola from Kerala
The airport is closed. Yoshkar-Ola Airport (JOK) has had all flights halted since 29 September 2023 for runway reconstruction. The regional head said on 1 July 2026 that regular service should resume by the end of 2027; a new terminal is already built. Until then, do not book a ticket to Yoshkar-Ola. The nearest working airports are Cheboksary (CSY), about 67 km in a straight line, and Kazan (KZN), about 120 km in a straight line. Road distances are longer, and we have not checked buses or taxis, so ask the university how it collects first-year students.
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then either a flight to Cheboksary or Kazan with a road transfer, or the overnight train from Moscow's Kazansky terminal, which takes about 14–16 hours (one direct train). The city is 640 km from Moscow in a straight line. For documents, see the admission process and NORKA attestation. Compare with Cheboksary, Kazan and Ulyanovsk, which are in the same region and have working airports.
Cost of living in Yoshkar-Ola
We found no official monthly cost for Yoshkar-Ola and no hostel price from the university. Budget for tuition, hostel, medical insurance, food, a phone plan, transport and winter clothes, and ask three senior students for their real monthly spend. Add the transfer from Cheboksary or Kazan on each trip home. Keep a reserve of 10–20% for fee changes and the rouble–rupee rate (₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026).
Indian students and food in Yoshkar-Ola
The FMGE numbers show that Indian graduates of MarSU are numerous: 930 sat the exam in 2024 alone. We found no official student count and no verified source on Indian shops or restaurants in Yoshkar-Ola. A city of 281,248 people has supermarkets, but ask where rice, spices and Indian vegetables are sold. Students cook in hostel kitchens. Because the Indian group is large, finding a senior Malayali student should be easy: ask the university or us for contacts. See Indian food in Russia and student life for Malayalis.
Is Yoshkar-Ola safe for Indian students?
Mari El is in the Volga region, not in a border region or the North Caucasus. The Indian Embassy's August 2024 advice named Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk. We know of no published incident involving Indian students in Yoshkar-Ola. Everyday risks are ice and cold, and the closed airport means longer, more tiring trips, so plan the road transfer in daylight. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the embassy after arrival and refuse any work offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
