Yaroslavl State Medical University and Life in Yaroslavl: MBBS Fee, FMGE, Weather and Travel for Indian Students
Yaroslavl is an old Volga city of about 577,000 people, 250 km north-east of Moscow and about three hours from it by train. Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU) was founded in 1944. Its 2025-26 price order gives the English-language track at 350,000 roubles a year, about ₹4.0 lakh, but almost no Indian graduate appears in the FMGE reports. This page explains both facts and what to ask before you pay.
In short: Yaroslavl State Medical University is a public university founded in 1944. Its price order No. 22/03-15 of 23 May 2025 gives the English-medium track for foreign students at 350,000 roubles a year, 2,100,000 roubles over six years, about ₹4.0 lakh a year and ₹23.8 lakh in total, for the 2025-26 intake. Only 19 of its graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, and 2 passed, so the sample is too small to judge. Yaroslavl is three hours by train from Moscow and cold in winter.
Medical universities in Yaroslavl, Russia
Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU), also searched as Yaroslavl Medical University or Yaroslavl State Medical Academy, is a federal public university under the Russian Ministry of Health. Russian Wikipedia gives 15 August 1944 as its founding date. It was a medical institute until 1994, an academy from 1994 to 2014 and has been a university since. The address is Revolutsionnaya Street 5, Yaroslavl 150000. It is the only medical university in the city on our list.
Fee from the price order. The university's order No. 22/03-15 of 23 May 2025, Annex 3, sets the price of training "on the intermediary language (English)" for 1st-course entrants of 2025-26 at 350,000 roubles a year and 2,100,000 roubles for the six years, flat. At the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 that is about ₹4.0 lakh a year and ₹23.8 lakh over the course. The Russian-language General Medicine track, priced for all payers in Annex 2, is 215,211 roubles a year. A 2026-27 order for first-course entrants exists on the university's site, but we could not open it, so the 2026 intake fee is not confirmed. Two agent sources give 350,000 roubles (selectyouruniversity.com) and 395,000 roubles with a hostel at 100,000 roubles (rmcedu.com); those are not official. The order applies to new entrants, not to continuing students.
Language. "Intermediary language (English)" is the Russian term for teaching through English as a bridge. It does not tell you that every subject in every year is taught in English. The NMC rules need at least 54 months in English, so ask YSMU in writing how many months of the six years are in English and in which language the clinical rotations and the internship run. See NMC rules.
FMGE. NBEMS reports show very small batches: 5 candidates in 2022 (0 passed), 4 in 2023 (1), 5 in 2024 (1), 3 in June 2025 (0) and 2 in December 2025 (0). In 2022–2025 that is 2 passes out of 19. With so few candidates the result says little about teaching quality, but it tells you something else: there are very few Indian graduates from Yaroslavl, so you cannot learn from many seniors, and a new student would be among a small group. YSMU is not in our FMGE ranking, which needs 300 candidates.

Yaroslavl weather for Kerala students
Yaroslavl is one of the colder cities in our list. Wikipedia's English page gives a mean of −12.0 °C in January and 17.9 °C in July, but these are 1961–1990 normals. A table on the Russian Wikipedia, whose period is not stated, gives −9.4 °C and 20.4 °C. Either way, winter has deep frost, snow cover for months and short daylight, and summer is mild.
- Winter clothing: a long insulated coat, waterproof boots with a thick sole, thermal underwear, a woollen hat, gloves and a scarf. Buy on arrival, with advice from seniors.
- Indoor heating: buildings are heated centrally, so dress in layers.
- Time: Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
Our winter packing list has the details.
How to reach Yaroslavl from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow via Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi. Yaroslavl has an airport, Tunoshna (Golden Ring International Airport, IAR), but we found no Moscow route, so do not plan on flying from Moscow. The practical way is the train from Moscow: about 3 to 3.5 hours by express electric train (an aggregator gives 3 hours 23 minutes). Yaroslavl is about 250 km from Moscow in a straight line.
Ask the international office whether it sends a representative to the Moscow airport and which station the group will use. Allow a buffer of one day between your flight and the train so that a delay does not break the plan.

Indian students and food in Yaroslavl
We found no count of Indian or Malayali students at YSMU, and the FMGE tables suggest a small group. We have no verified list of Indian shops or restaurants in the city. Plan to cook for yourself unless the hostel offers meals, and ask YSMU to introduce you to current Indian students before you pay. Check the Indian food in Russia page for the general approach.
Is Yaroslavl safe for Indian students?
Yaroslavl is not in a border or North Caucasus region and is not named in the Indian Embassy's August 2024 precaution notice for Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk. We found no published attack on Indian students there. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia because of the war with Ukraine, drone attacks and airport closures, and these can reach regions far from the border. India's Ministry of External Affairs also warns Indians not to accept offers that lead to service in the Russian armed forces.
Racist attacks on foreign students are rare but have happened: in February 2026 a teenager injured four Indian students in a hostel at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa. In a small group of Indian students, hostel security and looking after each other matter more. Ask what controls the entrance, avoid walking alone late at night, carry copies of your passport and registration, and save the Embassy of India in Moscow's contacts in your phone.
