MBBS in Orenburg, Russia: University, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students
Orenburg, in the southern Urals close to the border with Kazakhstan, has one university on this site that teaches medicine to foreign students: Orenburg State Medical University (OrSMU). Its 2026/27 price order gives the foreign-student line at 422,380 roubles a year, about ₹4.8 lakh. Its graduates passed FMGE at 38.6% in 2022 to 2025, the highest of the 24 universities with at least 300 candidates. This page gives the fee, the FMGE record, the one open question about English, the cold, the route and prices.
In short: Orenburg is a city of 543,654 people (2021 census), 1,230 km from Moscow, with an operating airport about 2.2 hours from Moscow by air. Orenburg State Medical University is first of 24 universities in our FMGE ranking, with 564 of 1,460 candidates passing in 2022 to 2025 (38.6%). The 2026/27 price order gives 422,380 roubles for the first year on the foreign-student line, about ₹4.8 lakh, but the university does not state English as the language of the programme. Get that in writing, because the NMC requires English.
Medical university in Orenburg, Russia
Orenburg State Medical University is the only medical university in the city that we cover. It was founded in 1944 and its address is Sovetskaya str. 6, Orenburg. Fees below are converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026.
Orenburg State Medical University published a price order for 2026/27 new intake with a separate line for General Medicine "using an intermediary language", which is how Russian universities describe the foreign-student track. The first year costs 422,380 roubles (about ₹4.8 lakh), and the order shows lower prices for later years: 390,960, 334,840, 296,340, 275,380 and 233,020 roubles, 1,952,920 roubles in all (about ₹22.1 lakh). Treat the later years as printed prices, not a promise, and ask in the contract whether they hold for your intake. The Russian-medium line is lower at 338,220 roubles (about ₹3.8 lakh). The order does not name the language of the intermediary track, and the university's old English site lists no English-medium programme. In practice this is the English track, but you need the university to say so in writing.
The FMGE record is the strongest we have. 39.3% passed in 2022 (101 of 257), 30.8% in 2023 (89 of 289), 43.4% in 2024 (194 of 447), 25.3% in June 2025 (40 of 158) and 45.3% in December 2025 (140 of 309). Over 2022 to 2025, 564 of 1,460 passed (38.6%), against about 25% for Russia as a whole. Orenburg was above the Russian average in every one of those sessions, including June 2025 when the Russian average was 18.1%. The numbers of candidates are large, so this is not a lucky small group. The FMGE pass rate page lists all universities.
The hostel question has no published answer. The English site names three hostels, built in 1961, 1964 and 1981, with no prices. Ask how many places are reserved for foreign students, which hostel you will live in, and what it costs per month. The university's English site also carried a message of condolence to Indian students after the 2023 Odisha train accident, which suggests an Indian presence, but we found no count.

Orenburg weather for Kerala students
The January mean in Orenburg is −11.8 °C and the July mean is 22.5 °C (1991 to 2020). This is a continental climate: cold winters like Ufa's and a summer that is warmer than Moscow's. The steppe is open to the wind, so the cold feels stronger, and snow lies from November to March. For a Kerala student the surprise is the swing between seasons: more than 34 degrees between the January and July means.
Buy the winter jacket, boots with grip, thermal layers and gloves in Orenburg after arrival. See the winter packing list for what to take from Kerala. The warm summer helps with the transition: you arrive in late summer to mild weather and have a month or two to prepare.
How to reach Orenburg from Kerala
Orenburg Airport (Tsentralny, REN) is operating and is about 2.2 hours by air from Moscow. The train from Moscow takes about 25 to 26 hours. From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia: fly from Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Kozhikode (CCJ) to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then to Moscow and on to Orenburg. Allow a full day for the second leg and a buffer for airport restrictions, which have affected Russian airports in 2026.
Orenburg is two hours ahead of Moscow, so local time is 30 minutes behind India. It is close to the border with Kazakhstan, not Ukraine. The nearest Russian consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission and NORKA attestation for the document steps.
Cost of living in Orenburg
We found no usable Numbeo price data for Orenburg, and no official student budget, so we do not give a monthly figure. Tuition is lower than in Kazan or Ufa and Orenburg is a smaller city, 543,654 people, so food, transport and rent are likely lower than in Moscow or Saint Petersburg; "likely" is the honest word here. Ask three senior Indian students what they spend in a normal month, including food, mobile plan and the winter clothing in year one.
Budget separately for medical insurance, the hostel fee and the flights from Kerala, which are the largest single items in year one. The cost of living in Russia page compares cities with the data we could verify.
Indian students and food in Orenburg
1,460 OrSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022 to 2025, and 309 sat in December 2025 alone, so Indian students are a regular and large group at the university. We found no published count of students from Kerala and no verified Indian restaurants. Ask the university or us to connect you with current students and ask where they buy rice, spices and vegetables, and whether the hostel kitchens allow rice cookers. The Indian food in Russia page lists what we could confirm.
Is Orenburg safe for Indian students?
Orenburg is a regional capital near Kazakhstan, not on the border with Ukraine and not in the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at OrSMU. Check the advisory at mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival, keep copies of your documents with your parents and ask about hostel security. Never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.

Orenburg compared with Ufa and Kazan
Orenburg has the best FMGE record of the three and the lowest first-year fee, about ₹4.8 lakh against ₹5.5 lakh at Ufa and ₹5.4 lakh at Kazan. It is also the smallest city and one of the farthest from Moscow, with the least information published in English. Choose it if you can get the English terms in writing and the family is comfortable with a regional city; otherwise compare all options on the cities page.
