Medical universities in Cheboksary, Russia
Chuvash State University named after I.N. Ulyanov (ChuvSU) is at Moskovsky Prospekt 15, Cheboksary. It was founded in 1967 and named after Ilya Ulyanov, the father of Lenin, by a decree of 30 November 1967. Medicine is taught in its medical faculty or Medical Institute. According to Russian Wikipedia, it admitted its first 25 foreign students in 1991. It is a state university. Indian searches say "Chuvash State Medical University", about 1,300 a month, and "Chuvash State University fees"; they mean this institution, since there is no separate medical university in the city. We did not find a WDOMS record in our research, so check it.
Fee. The university's price file for foreign students (2025 intake, published without an order number or date) has a column for English: 245,000 roubles for the first year, about ₹2.8 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Six years at that price would be about 1,470,000 roubles, about ₹16.6 lakh (first year × 6, our estimate). The same file lists 218,000 roubles for study in Russian and 250,000 for a translator-service line. One consultancy's 2026 table gives tuition at 300,000 roubles a year and a hostel at 75,000 roubles; another agent lists 80,000 for the hostel. Treat the agent numbers as older or different, and the hostel prices as unverified. Ask the international office for a signed fee list for your intake, with the year-by-year prices and the hostel rate. See the fees page to compare with cities where an official price exists.
Language. Agent pages disagree: one says English, with a Russian-language programme too, and another says "English and Russian". The university has not told us in anything we could read. NMC rules need at least 54 months in English and a 12-month internship at the same university; ask in writing. See the NMC rules.
FMGE. The sample is moderate but the trend is good:
| Session | Candidates | Passed | ChuvSU | Russian average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 36 | 10 | 27.8% | 26.0% |
| 2023 | 46 | 5 | 10.9% | 19.4% |
| 2024 | 78 | 25 | 32.1% | 29.5% |
| June 2025 | 38 | 8 | 21.1% | 18.1% |
| December 2025 | 66 | 25 | 37.9% | 30.9% |
ChuvSU beat the Russian average in four of five sessions; 2023 was a poor year at 10.9% on 46 candidates. With fewer than 300 candidates it is outside our ranking by FMGE results, and small batches swing widely. Seven in ten candidates still fail in a typical session. See the FMGE pass rate page.

Cheboksary weather for Kerala students
Cheboksary stands on the Volga. Our figures (1991–2020 normals) give a January mean of −10.0 °C and a July mean of 19.7 °C. That is a long winter by Kerala standards, though milder than Siberia, and cold spells fall well below the mean. The time zone is Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.

A student needs a down jacket, insulated boots with grip, a hat, gloves and thermal underwear. Ask senior students where to buy them. The winter packing list has the checklist.
How to reach Cheboksary from Kerala
Cheboksary International Airport (CSY) is operating, which makes the city easy to reach. There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia, so fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then about 1.4 hours to Cheboksary. The overnight train from Moscow takes about 12.4 hours. The city is 600 km from Moscow in a straight line. Cheboksary airport is also the nearest working airport for Yoshkar-Ola, whose own airport has been closed since September 2023. Ask the university who meets first-year students. See the admission process and NORKA attestation pages.
Cost of living in Cheboksary
We found no official monthly cost for Cheboksary, and the hostel prices of 75,000 and 80,000 roubles a year (about ₹85,000 and ₹90,000) are agent numbers that we could not confirm. Budget for tuition, hostel, medical insurance, food, a phone plan, transport and winter clothes, and ask three senior students for their real monthly spend. Keep a reserve of 10–20% for fee changes and the rouble–rupee rate (₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026).
Indian students and food in Cheboksary
We found no official count of Indian students. The FMGE rows show 264 ChuvSU graduates in 2022–2025, with 78 in 2024 alone, so the Indian group is growing but modest. Cheboksary is the capital of Chuvashia, a republic with its own Chuvash language and culture alongside Russian. Students cook in hostel kitchens. Ask where rice, spices and Indian vegetables are sold, and ask the university or us for contacts of Kerala students. See Indian food in Russia and student life for Malayalis.
Is Cheboksary safe for Indian students?
Chuvashia is not one of the border regions (Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk) for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians take precautions and relocate temporarily, and it is not in the North Caucasus. We found no incident involving Indian students at ChuvSU. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the embassy after arrival and refuse any work offer connected with the military.
