MBBS in Volgograd, Russia: University, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students

Volgograd, on the lower Volga, 910 km south-east of Moscow, has one university on this site that teaches medicine to foreign students: Volgograd State Medical University (VolgSMU). We could not confirm a foreign-student fee, and the university says Russian is its main language of teaching, with English offered to some groups. Over 2022 to 2025, 2,209 of its graduates sat FMGE and 17.0% passed. Winters are among the mildest in this group of cities. This page gives what we could verify and what to ask.

In short: Volgograd is a city of 1,028,036 people (2021 census) with a working international airport, about two hours by air from Moscow. VolgSMU is one of the larger sources of Indian FMGE candidates (2,209 in 2022 to 2025), but only 17.0% passed, below the Russian average of about 25%. We could not confirm its foreign-student tuition, and the university says English is "an alternative for students from Asia, Africa, Latin America" while Russian is the main language. The January mean is −5.7 °C and July is hot at 24.8 °C. The airport has been restricted during drone alerts.

Medical university in Volgograd, Russia

Volgograd State Medical University (VolgSMU) is a public university under the Ministry of Health, founded in 1935 as the Stalingrad Medical Institute; the address is Pavshikh Bortsov Square 1. It is the only medical university in Volgograd that we cover. Wikipedia gives about 5,000 Russian students and 900 international students, without a date.

Fee. We could not confirm a foreign-student tuition. The 2025/26 fee order is on the university website, but its readable table is for Russian citizens, and two 2026 orders (No. 150-KO of 23 January 2026 and No. 255-KO of 6 February 2026) are listed but were not available to us. So we give no figure and we advise against trusting an agent figure without the university's price list. Ask VolgSMU, or ask us, for the foreign-student price list for your intake, and for the hostel fee, which we also could not find.

Language. This is the key question. The dean's office page for foreign students says foreigners study General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, that Russian is the main language of teaching and that English is an alternative for students from Asia, Africa and Latin America. It does not say which programmes have an English track or whether English covers all six years. The NMC requires the course to be in English, so do not pay until VolgSMU confirms an English-medium General Medicine group, for all six years including the clinical rotations, in writing.

FMGE. 21.3% passed in 2022 (117 of 549), 13.2% in 2023 (80 of 607), 19.3% in 2024 (113 of 586), 11.4% in June 2025 (26 of 228) and 16.7% in December 2025 (40 of 239). Over 2022 to 2025, 376 of 2,209 passed (17.0%), 20th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking, against about 25% for Russia overall. In every one of those sessions VolgSMU was below the Russian average. See the FMGE pass rate page, and compare with Smolensk, Kazan and Orenburg, where results have been better.

Check the airport carefully before booking. Caucasian Knot and other outlets reported Rosaviatsia restrictions that suspended flights at Volgograd airport during drone alerts in October and December 2025 and January 2026, with delays and diversions. Keep a buffer, avoid a non-refundable final ticket and have the train as a fallback. Volgograd keeps Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India. The consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission.

Cost of living in Volgograd

We found no usable price data for Volgograd and no official student budget, so we give no monthly figure. It is a city of more than a million people, and prices for food and transport are likely to be lower than in Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Because we have neither the tuition nor the hostel fee, the full budget cannot be built yet; ask the university for both, then ask senior Indian students for their monthly spending.
