Medical universities in Petrozavodsk, Russia

Many Indian searches use the name "Petrozavodsk State Medical University", about 1,000 a month. That name does not exist; the medical course is at Petrozavodsk State University, Lenina Ave. 33, in its Medical Institute. PetrSU was decided on 10 June 1940 and opened on 7 September 1940 as the Karelo-Finnish State University, and carried the name of O.V. Kuusinen from 1964 to 1991. The medical faculty opened in 1960. It is a state university under the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, not the Ministry of Health. We did not find a WDOMS record for Petrozavodsk, which is not proof of absence, so check it.

Fee. The university's Russian-language programme page for General Medicine gives 315,000 roubles a year for foreign citizens and 275,000 for Russian citizens, with payment in full or in two instalments (1 September and 1 February). At the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 that is about ₹3.6 lakh. The page does not separate the English-medium track, so we cannot say that this is the English price. The official Study in Russia portal lists PetrSU's General Medicine at 200,000 roubles with Russian as the language, which looks like the Russian-language line. One agent quotes a six-year total of 2,028,000 roubles. Ask the international office for the English-track price in writing before comparing with other cities.

Language. The university's English pages list "General Medicine English Medium" among the specialist programmes available for 2026/27, and state that Russian and English are the languages of instruction for all programmes. They do not say that all six years are in English. The NMC rule needs at least 54 months in English, so ask for the hours in each language by year. See the NMC rules.

Hostel. The accommodation page lists 11 dormitories, 2–3 students to a room, at 600 roubles a month (about ₹680); an exchange-student page quotes 500–1,000 roubles a month. Confirm the current rate and whether foreign students pay the same. At this price the hostel is among the cheapest we have seen, so check the room, kitchen and heating.

FMGE. NBEMS shows 1 candidate in 2022, 1 in 2023, 1 in 2024 and 1 in June 2025 from PetrSU: 4 in all, none passed. That is too few to judge anything. An official 2022 news item, "Indian Students Study Medicine at PetrSU", shows that the university has had Indian medical students for some years, but we did not read a count. Compare with the Russian average of about 25% on the FMGE pass rate page, and ask the university for the exam results of its recent Indian graduates.
