Medical university in Ufa, Russia
People who search "Bashkir State Medical University in which city" want one answer: it is in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It is the only medical university in the city that we cover, so the decision for a student is not which Ufa university, but whether Ufa is the right city.
Bashkir State Medical University was founded in 1932. Its English fee page lists 31.05.01 General Medicine, specialist degree, six years, with the language of the programme shown as Russian or English. The price is 490,080 roubles a year, about ₹5.5 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026, and the same price is listed for pediatrics, dentistry and preventive medicine. The page does not name a year; the archived copy we read is from July 2026, so it is current for the 2026/27 intake. We found no hostel price on the accommodation page, so ask for it. How much of the clinical years is taught in English is not stated.
FMGE results are the reason many Kerala families look at Ufa. 38.4% passed in 2022 (58 of 151), 22.9% in 2023 (59 of 258), 30.9% in 2024 (105 of 340), 21.9% in June 2025 (28 of 128) and 25.0% in December 2025 (42 of 168). That is 292 of 1,045 over 2022 to 2025, 27.9%. Note the pattern: BSMU's numbers of candidates have grown fast, from 49 in 2020 to 340 in 2024, which suggests that the Indian group has grown quickly too. See the FMGE pass rate page for all universities.
A student who wants a second city to compare should look at Kazan, where tuition is similar and the FMGE record has been somewhat higher, and Orenburg, where tuition is a little lower and the record higher still. The fees page shows all fees in INR.

Ufa weather for Kerala students
The January mean in Ufa is −12.2 °C and the July mean is 19.8 °C (1991 to 2020). This is colder than Moscow (−6.2 °C) and Kazan (−10.0 °C), and winter is long. The first winter is the biggest adjustment for a Kerala student: the cold arrives in November, and the ground stays frozen until March. Hostels and university buildings are heated, so you feel the cold mainly on the walk to class.
Buy a down jacket, boots with grip, thermal layers, gloves and a hat in Ufa after arrival, ideally with a senior student. Do not buy an expensive jacket at home; the ones sold in Kerala are not tested for this cold. See the winter packing list.

How to reach Ufa from Kerala
Ufa International Airport (UFA) is operating and is about 2.2 hours by air from Moscow. The train from Moscow takes about 29 hours, so most students fly. From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia: fly from Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Kozhikode (CCJ) to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then to Moscow, and then to Ufa. Ask BSMU which airport it uses for the pickup of first-year students.
Ufa is two hours ahead of Moscow, so local time is only 30 minutes behind India. That makes calls home easier than from Moscow. Ufa is in a non-border region, 1,160 km from Moscow. The Russian consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission and documents for the MEA apostille and NORKA steps.
Cost of living in Ufa
Ufa is one of the cheaper university cities. Numbeo, which collects user-submitted prices, showed on 7 October 2026 (168 entries from 24 contributors) a one-way public transport ticket at 46 roubles, a monthly pass at about 1,470 roubles (about ₹1,660), a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at about 775 roubles (about ₹880) and a one-bedroom flat outside the centre at about 26,700 roubles a month (about ₹30,200). These are user estimates, not official figures, and most first-year students live in the hostel.
For Ufa we do not have a published BSMU hostel fee, so the hostel cost is the first question for the international office: how much per month, for how many months, which room type, and whether every first-year foreign student gets a room. The city has no metro; it is only planned, so students use buses and trams. Compare the numbers with other cities on the cost of living in Russia page.
Indian students and food in Ufa
No Indian student count is published, but 1,045 BSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022 to 2025, and the yearly number rose from 49 to 340 between 2020 and 2024, so Indian students are a large group today. The 2021 census shows a mixed city: Russians 48.9%, Tatars 27.0% and Bashkirs 20.4%. We could not verify Indian restaurants or Malayali groups in Ufa. Ask BSMU or us to put you in touch with current students from Kerala and ask where they buy rice, dal and spices and how the hostel kitchens work. More general advice is on Indian food in Russia.
Is Ufa safe for Indian students? The February 2026 attack
7 February 2026. According to Wikipedia, a 15-year-old attacked students in a Bashkir State Medical University student residence in Ufa. Seven people were injured, including four Indian students. No deaths were reported. Police detained the attacker, and Russian law enforcement opened a criminal case for attempted murder of two or more people, and a second case for negligence against officials.
This is a single incident that we found in one source; we could not check police or embassy statements. It does not make Ufa a high-risk city, since Bashkortostan is not a border region or in the North Caucasus, but a parent has the right to ask about it. Put these questions to BSMU in writing:
- What has changed in hostel security since February 2026: entrance guard, entry control, cameras, visitors' rules?
- Who is the university's contact person for foreign students' parents, and how fast does the university inform families about an incident?
- Does the medical insurance cover injuries and return to India?
Also register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival, check mea.gov.in before travel and never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. Read the general guide, is MBBS in Russia safe.

Who Ufa suits
Ufa suits a student who wants a mid-range fee of about ₹5.5 lakh, a university with a large Indian group and a FMGE record near the Russian average, and who can face a January mean of −12.2 °C. It suits less well a student who wants a warm climate, an Embassy nearby or the shortest route from Kerala. If you want a milder winter, compare Volgograd and Moscow; the full list is on the cities page.
