MBBS in Yekaterinburg, Russia: Universities, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students

Yekaterinburg, also spelt Ekaterinburg, is the Urals' largest city, with 1,544,376 people and a metro that opened in 1991. Its Ural State Medical University lists 300,000 roubles a year for foreign students on the intermediary-language track (about ₹3.4 lakh), but runs a bilingual course in which English is used in the first years and Russian later. For an Indian student that language split is the main thing to check.

In short: Yekaterinburg, Russia, has one medical university in our list, Ural State Medical University (USMU), founded in 1930. The 2025/26 price order gives 300,000 roubles a year for foreign students on the intermediary-language row, about ₹3.4 lakh. The university calls its programme "bilingual": English in the early years, Russian later, and it says students need Russian for work with patients. That may not meet the NMC rule of 54 months in English. The city is 1,420 km from Moscow, 2.3 hours by air, with a January mean of −12.6 °C.

Medical universities in Yekaterinburg, Russia

Ural State Medical University is at Repina St. 3. It was founded by decree on 10 July 1930 and opened on 1 March 1931 as the Sverdlovsk State Medical Institute (Yekaterinburg was called Sverdlovsk until 1991), became the Ural State Medical Academy and received university status in 2013. It is a state university under the Ministry of Health, and the World Directory of Medical Schools lists it. Most Indian searches say "Yekaterinburg medical university"; this is the one.

Fee. Order No. 237(a)-r of 23 May 2025, approved by the Academic Council on the same day, sets the 2025/26 prices for new students. Annex 2 for foreign citizens lists General Medicine at 270,000 roubles for CIS citizens and 300,000 for other foreigners, and section 2.1, "specialitet for foreign citizens with the use of an intermediary language", shows 300,000 as a single value, about ₹3.4 lakh at the rate of 15 October 2026. Dentistry is 340,000. The row is labelled in a way we could not fully match to the 31.05.01 General Medicine code, so confirm that the line you are quoted is the General Medicine one. We found no 2026/27 order in the April 2026 snapshot of the university's site, so ask for the figure for your intake. The order covers a new intake; students on later courses are under a separate order we did not read.

Language. USMU's English site calls its track "bilingual". The page says English is used for the first 2 years of study and also says that the first 3 years of study are in Russian, so the switch point is unclear. It states that students must be proficient in Russian for practical training with patients, and that entrance tests cover chemistry, biology, English and Russian. A programme that moves to Russian after the early years does not look like the 54 months in English that the NMC rules need, so ask for the number of hours in English in writing and read the NMC rules before you pay.

Hostel. The student-hotels page lists the Crystal Hotel on Korolenko St. for foreign students, with dormitory-style rooms at 6,900 to 12,900 roubles a month including utilities, internet and cleaning, and a 50% deposit. That is about ₹7,800 to ₹14,600 a month, far above the 600–1,000 roubles a month that Petrozavodsk and Krasnoyarsk publish, so compare it carefully. An agent quotes 12,000 to 60,000 roubles a year; we treat that as unverified. Ask which room type the lowest price is for.

FMGE. NBEMS reports for 2020–2025 have no rows under USMU's name. We cannot compare it with the Russian average of about 25%. The university signed an agreement on recruiting students from India, according to its own news page, but gave no student count. See the FMGE pass rate page for universities that have results.

Yekaterinburg weather for Kerala students

Yekaterinburg sits on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains. Our figures (1991–2020 normals) give a January mean of −12.6 °C and a July mean of 18.9 °C. That is milder than Novosibirsk or Tomsk, but still deep winter by Kerala standards, and cold spells fall well below the mean. The time zone is Moscow plus 2 hours, which is 0.5 hours behind India, so evening calls to Kerala are easy.

Cost of living in Yekaterinburg

We found no official monthly cost for Yekaterinburg. The numbers we have are the hostel range above and the tuition. Add food, a phone plan, local transport (the metro opened in April 1991 and is in operation), medical insurance and winter clothes. A big city with a metro tends to cost more than a small one, but we have no verified figure, so ask three or four senior students what they spend in a normal month. Compare tuition with other cities on the fees page, and keep a reserve of 10–20% for rises and the rouble–rupee rate (₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026).

Indian students and food in Yekaterinburg

We found no count of Indian students at USMU and no verified source on Indian restaurants or shops in the city. With 1.5 million people, Yekaterinburg has large supermarkets and markets, and it is a historic city: the Church on the Blood, built where the last tsar's family died in 1918, is its best-known landmark. For daily life, students cook in hostel or hotel-dorm kitchens and shop for rice and spices as senior students advise. Ask USMU for contacts of Kerala students on the course and for photos of the Crystal Hotel rooms. See Indian food in Russia.

Is Yekaterinburg safe for Indian students?

Yekaterinburg is in the Urals, about 1,400 km from Moscow, and not in a border region or the North Caucasus. The Indian Embassy's August 2024 advice named Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at USMU. Ask the university about medical care, insurance and vaccinations before you go. Check mea.gov.in before each trip and refuse any work offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
