MBBS in Omsk, Russia: Universities, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students
Omsk is a Western Siberian city of about 1.1 million people, 2,240 km east of Moscow, and home to Omsk State Medical University. The university's 2025/26 price order gives 330,000 roubles for the first year (about ₹3.7 lakh), January averages −16.9 °C, and only 9 of its graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, with none passing. This page tells a Kerala family what that means before they choose Omsk.
In short: Omsk, Russia, has one medical university for foreign students, Omsk State Medical University, founded in 1920. Its price order for 2025/26 lists 330,000 roubles for the first year (about ₹3.7 lakh), and the university's own English page shows 363,000 roubles (about ₹4.1 lakh), so ask which applies to you. Omsk is 2,240 km from Moscow, 3.4 hours by air, and the January mean is −16.9 °C. Only 9 Indian graduates sat FMGE from here in 2022–2025 and none passed, which is too few to judge but still worth knowing.
Medical universities in Omsk, Russia
There is one medical university in Omsk for our purposes: Omsk State Medical University (OSMU). It was founded in 1920 as the Western Siberian State Medical Institute (WDOMS gives 1921 for the start of teaching) and later carried the names Omsk State Medical Institute and Omsk State Medical Academy. Many Indian searches still use "Omsk Medical Academy" or "Omsk State Medical Academy"; it is the same institution. It is a state university under the Russian Ministry of Health, and the World Directory of Medical Schools lists it.
Fee. The university's order No. 318-o of 23 April 2025 sets the prices for foreign students from far-abroad countries in General Medicine (31.05.01): 330,000 roubles for the first course, then 302,160, 239,880, 239,880, 239,880 and 239,880 for courses two to six. At the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026 that is about ₹3.7 lakh for the first year. Treat the second-to-sixth-year prices as what current students on those courses pay in 2025/26, not as a fixed path for a new student, and do not add them into a six-year total. The order has no separate English line; the English-language page of the university shows 363,000 roubles (about ₹4.1 lakh) for 2026-27 and says the same sum applied in 2025/26. A newer order, No. 262-o of 23 April 2026, exists but we could not read it. Ask the international office for the price of your intake in writing. The university gives 200 paid places and no budget places for foreigners for 2026.
Language. OSMU says its General Medicine programme for far-abroad applicants is taught in English, with entrance tests in chemistry and biology in English and Russian studied as a foreign language. That is the university's own statement. Its pages do not describe the language of the hospital training in the senior years, and the NMC rules need at least 54 months in English, so get the language of every year in the contract. Our agent source lists the hostel at about USD 631 a year (about ₹60,000), rooms of two to three students; the official hostel charge depends on the building and is set by a university order we could not read.
FMGE. This is where Omsk is different. NBEMS shows 1 candidate in 2022, 4 in 2023, 2 in 2024, 1 in June 2025 and 1 in December 2025 from OSMU, 9 in all, and none passed. With so few, the result says little about teaching quality. It mostly says that Omsk is new to Indian students: the university's own news item says its first far-abroad students, from India, Lebanon and Serbia, arrived (the item is undated). The first large Indian batches will reach FMGE only after six years. Compare this with the Russian average of about 25% on the FMGE pass rate page.

Omsk weather for Kerala students
Omsk has a continental climate. The 1991–2020 normals give a January mean of −16.9 °C and a July mean of 19.4 °C. A mean hides the cold spells, which in a Siberian January are much colder than the average, so plan for the worst days and not the mean. Summers are warm and short. For a student from Kerala the first winter is the biggest change of the whole course.

- Coat: a long down jacket rated for deep cold, bought in Omsk after arrival if you can, because local shops sell the right grade; ask senior students for a good shop.
- Feet and hands: insulated boots with grip, wool socks, a warm hat that covers the ears, and proper gloves.
- Inside: thermal underwear for the walk to the lecture hall. Buildings are well heated.
Read the winter packing list before you fly, and arrive for an August or September intake, not in the middle of winter.
How to reach Omsk from Kerala
Omsk Central Airport (OMS) is operating. There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia, so the route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight of about 3.4 hours to Omsk. The Moscow–Omsk train takes about 35–38 hours, which most families use only as a back-up. Omsk is 2,240 km from Moscow, local time is Moscow plus 3 hours, and that is 0.5 hours ahead of India. We have not checked whether any airline connects Omsk to the Gulf or Delhi, so ask the university which route its pickup is planned around.
Because the domestic leg is long, book a ticket with one protected connection and keep your admission letter and visa papers in the hand luggage. The admission process page explains the documents and the NORKA Roots attestation.
Cost of living in Omsk
We found no official monthly figure for living costs in Omsk, so we do not quote one. What we can say: tuition at about ₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year is in the middle of Russian fees, the hostel is a small cost compared with tuition, and food depends on whether a student cooks. Add the first-year winter clothes, medical insurance, a mobile plan, study material and the migration registration fee that the university handles. Ask three senior students in Omsk what they spend in a normal month and what in a month with travel home. Our fees page shows the tuition side of the budget. Keep a reserve of 10–20% for fee increases and the rouble–rupee rate, since the rate was ₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026.
Indian students and food in Omsk
We found no published count of Indian students in Omsk and no source on Indian restaurants or shops there. The university's news pages describe the first Indian students as recent arrivals, so the Indian community is likely small compared with older centres such as Kazan or Ulyanovsk; that is an inference, not a statistic. Practical points:
- Most students cook in hostel kitchens. Rice, lentils, spices and vegetables are bought from Russian supermarkets and markets, and senior students share which shops stock what.
- Ask the international office for contacts of current Indian students, preferably from Kerala, before you pay.
- Learn basic Russian from the first year; patients in hospital speak Russian.

Is Omsk safe for Indian students?
Omsk is in Western Siberia, about 2,200 km from Moscow and far from the border regions of Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk named in the Indian Embassy's August 2024 advice. It is not in the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students in Omsk. The main risks are everyday ones: ice on pavements, cold, and the need to follow local rules. Check the advisory at mea.gov.in before you travel and before each return, because the situation can change, and never accept any work offer that involves the military.
