MBBS in Nalchik, Russia: Kabardino-Balkarian State University, Fees, FMGE, Travel and North Caucasus Safety
Nalchik is the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, a North Caucasus republic of about 247,000 people in the city, 1,430 km from Moscow in a straight line and below the Caucasus mountains. Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU) has taught Indian students in English since 2017, and 25.5% of its FMGE candidates passed in 2023–2025. This page gives the fee position, the language question, the route from Kerala and a detailed, source-based safety review for a region that families should not treat like central Russia.
In short: Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov (KBSU) is a public university in Nalchik, founded in 1957, with a separate six-year English-medium General Medicine programme for foreign students. We found no official price for foreigners; Careers360 lists 245,500 roubles for year one (about ₹2.8 lakh). Its FMGE pass rate was 25.5% in 2022–2025 (261 of 1,024), twelfth of 24 ranked universities and level with the Russian average. Nalchik is in the North Caucasus: the airport is often restricted, drones have been reported over the republic, and Canada and the UK Foreign Office warn about the region.
Medical universities in Nalchik, Russia
Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov (KBSU, also searched as Kabardino-Balkar State University or, wrongly, Nalchik State Medical University) is a classical state university with a medical faculty. English Wikipedia gives 1957 as the founding year; the World Directory of Medical Schools says the medical school opened in 1966. The address is Chernyshevskogo Street 173, Nalchik 360004, and the WDOMS lists the university. The medical programme is part of the university, under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, not a separate medical university.
Indian students. KBSU states that English-medium teaching of Indian and Egyptian students started in 2017, that on 1 October 2017 a group of 207 students from India began General Medicine in English, and that 630 students study in English. A page on its English site that is not dated lists India at 234 foreign students. These are KBSU's own figures from different years, and they show an Indian community large enough to have seniors, but we cannot say how many are from Kerala.
Fee. We found no price order or list for foreign students that we could read. The university publishes a price list "English-medium specialist degree programme for international students" and a list for foreigners, and refers to an order of 16 May 2025 (No. 327/O) for the 2025-26 first courses, but none of these is archived. The only list we could read is for citizens of Russia, with General Medicine at 239,600 roubles a year, which is not the foreigners' price. Careers360 puts year one at 245,500 roubles (about ₹2.8 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026) with a hostel at 8,500 roubles, "subject to variation". Treat that as an outlet figure and not a university price. Ask KBSU for the signed price for your intake, the fee for each year and the hostel charge.
Language. KBSU lists General Medicine 31.05.01 as a separate six-year English-medium programme, and its price list wording is "with English included". The pages we saw do not say whether all six years are in English or whether Russian is introduced for the clinical years, and the WDOMS record lists Russian. The NMC rules need at least 54 months of English and a 12-month internship at the same university. Read the NMC rules and ask for the language of each year in writing.
FMGE. The NBEMS reports list KBSU as a significant FMGE source only from 2023: 33 of 169 passed in 2023 (19.5%), 105 of 396 in 2024 (26.5%), 38 of 190 in June 2025 (20.0%) and 85 of 268 in December 2025 (31.7%). In total 261 of 1,024, or 25.5%, passed in 2023–2025, twelfth of 24 universities in our FMGE ranking and level with the Russian average of about 25%. December 2025 beat the Russian average of 30.9% for that session. The earlier reports (2020–2022) show only one to three candidates a year under this name.

See the winter packing list.
How to reach Nalchik from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then take a domestic flight to Nalchik International Airport (NAL), about 3.2 hours. The train from Moscow takes about 24 to 26 hours. Nalchik is about 1,430 km from Moscow in a straight line.
The airport is open but is repeatedly restricted. Caucasian Knot reported restrictions on arrivals and departures at Nalchik and Vladikavkaz on 25 July 2025, a drone threat across the republics of the North Caucasus with restrictions at Nalchik and other airports in early December 2025, and Rosaviatsia restrictions again in 2026 (one lifted the same day on 8 May 2026). Delays of hours are normal, so keep a flexible ticket and a buffer night in Moscow. Ask KBSU who meets arrivals and which airport and hotel it uses.

Ask KBSU to link you with Malayali students, and ask about hostel kitchens and where they buy rice and vegetables. A vegetarian student should ask seniors how they manage in the hostel and the city. Is Nalchik safe for Indian students? A North Caucasus review
Nalchik is in the North Caucasus Federal District, a region that Western governments treat separately from central Russia. Here is what the sources say, and what we could not find.
- Indian government: we found no advisory from India's Ministry of External Affairs or the Embassy in Moscow that names Kabardino-Balkaria. The Embassy's notice of 14 August 2024 asked Indians in Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions to take precautions or relocate, and nothing wider. Check mea.gov.in and the Embassy site before each trip, because notices change.
- UK Foreign Office: it advises against all travel to Russia and says terrorists are active in the North Caucasus, mainly in Dagestan, with counter-terrorism operations at short notice that may restrict travel. Its help to British nationals in the North Caucasus is "very limited"; an Indian family should assume the same for Indian officials, whose nearest mission is in Moscow, 1,400 km away.
- Canada: its page for Russia, last updated 18 June 2026, says the security situation in many areas of the North Caucasus is unstable and unpredictable, and that military operations in Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia are carried out with little or no notice and come with travel restrictions.
- Drones and airspace: the airport has been restricted several times; in December 2025 a drone threat was declared across the republic, and the head of Kabardino-Balkaria issued a no-fly alert.
- History: Nalchik was the target of a large militant attack in October 2005. We found no incident involving Indian students in Nalchik.
What a family can do: ask KBSU in writing about the hostel's security and guards, the procedure when a counter-terrorism operation or a drone alert is announced, whether classes continue and what the university does if travel is restricted. Do not travel into the mountains, to Chechnya, Ingushetia or border areas without telling the university; carry your passport copy and migration registration, as police checks are frequent; and register with the Embassy of India in Moscow. India's Ministry of External Affairs also warns against any offer of service in the Russian armed forces. In February 2026 a teenager injured four Indian students in a hostel at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa. If your family is not comfortable with the North Caucasus, universities in Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod or Penza are in other regions; see Is MBBS in Russia safe?.
