MBBS in Kemerovo, Russia: University, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students
Kemerovo, in Siberia 2,990 km east of Moscow, has one university on this site that teaches medicine to foreign students: Kemerovo State Medical University (KemSMU). The January mean is −17.3 °C, among the coldest cities on this site, and local time is 1.5 hours ahead of India. This page gives the fee, the FMGE record, the cold, the long route from Kerala and the questions to ask.
In short: Kemerovo is a city of 557,119 people (2021 census) in Siberia, 2,990 km from Moscow, with an operating airport about 4.3 hours by air from Moscow. KemSMU's fee for 2026/27 appears to be 335,000 roubles a year (about ₹3.8 lakh), inferred from an official excerpt and not a confirmed price list. FMGE numbers are small, with 66 of 201 candidates passing in 2022 to 2025 (32.8%). The January mean is −17.3 °C. Local time is 1.5 hours ahead of India.
Medical university in Kemerovo, Russia
Kemerovo State Medical University (KemSMU, founded 1955, Voroshilova St. 22a) is the only medical university in Kemerovo on this site. Do not confuse it with Kemerovo State University, a different institution whose figures appear on some agent pages. Fees are converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026.
Fee. An official excerpt with a payment deadline of 21 August 2026 points to 335,000 roubles a year for 2026/27 (about ₹3.8 lakh). We did not read a full foreigner price list, so treat the figure as an inference and ask KemSMU for the list and the contract. The official page itself warns about intermediaries who give false fee information, so ask for the number from the university, not from an agent. The hostel is quoted by agents at 60,000 to 90,000 roubles a year (about ₹68,000 to ₹102,000) or USD 600 to 1,000, and none of those figures is official.
Language. The foreign-applicants pages say that "the educational program is implemented in English" for a six-year General Medicine specialty. We found no statement on whether Russian is used in the clinical years, and an agent says Russian is used for clinical training. The NMC requires English throughout, so ask KemSMU in writing for the language of each year, including hospital rotations.
FMGE. NBEMS shows KemSMU candidates only from 2023: 22 in 2023 (9 passed, 40.9%), 75 in 2024 (28 passed, 37.3%), 39 in June 2025 (9 passed, 23.1%) and 65 in December 2025 (20 passed, 30.8%). Over 2023 to 2025, 66 of 201 passed (32.8%), above the Russian average of about 25%, but a group of 201 over three years is too small to rank. It means the Indian group is recent and growing, and you will have few older students to ask. See the FMGE pass rate page for universities with a longer record.

Kemerovo weather for Kerala students
The January mean in Kemerovo is −17.3 °C and the July mean is 19.3 °C (1991 to 2020). That is about 11 degrees colder than Moscow in January and among the coldest on this site. Winter is long and the cold is sustained. Hostels, lecture halls and hospitals are heated, but the first-year clothing budget is higher than in the Volga cities: a proper down jacket rated for deep cold, insulated boots, thermal layers, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Buy them in Kemerovo after arrival, ask seniors what they used and read the winter packing list.

Ask students whether classes are ever cancelled in extreme cold and how the university handles it, since we have no verified record of that. Summers are mild, with a July mean of 19.3 °C.
How to reach Kemerovo from Kerala
Kemerovo International Airport (Alexey Leonov, KEJ) is operating, and the flight from Moscow takes about 4.3 hours. The train takes 48 to 55 hours, depending on the source. From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia: fly from Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Kozhikode (CCJ) to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then to Moscow, and then on the long leg to Kemerovo. The whole trip is the longest of the cities on this site, so plan one day for each leg and a night in Moscow if the connection is tight.
Kemerovo is four hours ahead of Moscow, so local time is 1.5 hours ahead of India. The distance from Moscow is 2,990 km in a straight line. Fares for the Moscow to Kemerovo flight are an extra expense on every trip home, and winter holidays are short. The Russian consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission and NORKA attestation.
Cost of living in Kemerovo
We found no usable price data for Kemerovo and no official student budget, so we give no monthly figure. It is a city of 557,119 people, and prices for food and transport are likely lower than in Moscow. The costs that stand out are the hostel (unconfirmed), the heavy winter clothing and the long flights to Moscow and back. Ask three senior Indian students what they spend each month. See cost of living in Russia.
Indian students and food in Kemerovo
No official count of Indian students exists; an agent claim of 300 to 700 is unsourced. The FMGE data suggest a recent, growing group: 22 candidates in 2023, 75 in 2024. We found no verified Indian restaurants. Ask KemSMU to connect you with current students from Kerala and ask where they buy rice, spices and vegetables, how the hostel kitchen works and how they manage in January. See Indian food in Russia.
Is Kemerovo safe for Indian students?
Kemerovo is deep in Siberia, thousands of kilometres from the border with Ukraine and far from the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at KemSMU. The practical risks are the cold, distance and a small student community. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival, keep copies of your documents with your parents, and ask about hostel security and emergency contacts. Never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
