Its Tver State Medical University (Tver SMU) teaches General Medicine to foreign students in a programme that uses English, priced at 430,000 roubles for the first year in 2026/27, about ₹4.9 lakh, in the university's order of 28 May 2026. Tver has no passenger airport, but the train from Moscow takes about an hour and a quarter. FMGE results have been below the Russian average and fell in 2025. This page gives the numbers and the questions to ask.
In short: Tver is 160 km from Moscow, with a Lastochka train of about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min and no passenger airport, so you land in Moscow and take the train. Tver SMU's price order No. 458 of 28 May 2026 gives 430,000 roubles for the first year of the English-programme General Medicine line, about ₹4.9 lakh (2026/27 intake; the 2024/25 list had 350,000). It is a large source of Indian candidates, with 1,854 sitting FMGE in 2022 to 2025, but only 17.2% passed, below the Russian average of about 25%, and the rate fell to 7.6% in December 2025. The January mean is −7.0 °C.
Medical university in Tver, Russia
Tver State Medical University (founded 1936, address Sovetskaya str. 4) is the only medical university in Tver on this site. Its order No. 458 of 28 May 2026 gives a separate line, "General Medicine (programme using English)", at 430,000 roubles for the first year of the 2026/27 intake (about ₹4.9 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026). The order covers the first year only; six years at that price would be about 2,580,000 roubles (about ₹29 lakh), which is our estimate. The earlier 2024/25 list had 350,000 roubles for the first year and 2,100,000 roubles for six years, so the first-year price has risen by 80,000 roubles; ask for the contract terms for later years.
On language, the admission page shows 2025 fee-paying General Medicine places: 1,037 in all, of which 1,000 are for foreign citizens in the English-using programme and 36 for foreigners in Russian. The wording "using English" does not prove that clinical teaching is entirely in English, so get that in writing, since the NMC requires English. We found no hostel price. The university is large, with about 4,000 undergraduate and 700 postgraduate students (undated Wikipedia infobox).
FMGE is the weak point. 18.6% passed in 2022 (99 of 532), 14.0% in 2023 (70 of 501), 24.4% in 2024 (118 of 484), 11.1% in June 2025 (20 of 180) and 7.6% in December 2025 (12 of 157). Over 2022 to 2025, 319 of 1,854 passed (17.2%), 19th of 24 universities with at least 300 candidates in our ranking, against about 25% for Russia overall. The December 2025 result of 7.6% compares with a Russian average of 30.9% that month. A student considering Tver should ask the university what support it gives to Indian students preparing for FMGE, and read the FMGE pass rate page before deciding. A nearby alternative is Smolensk, which is also within a few hours of Moscow by train and has a stronger record.

Tver weather for Kerala students
The January mean in Tver is −7.0 °C and the July mean is 19.0 °C (1991 to 2020). It is a little colder than Moscow (−6.2 °C) and much milder than Ufa or Perm. Snow lies from about November to March. Buy a down jacket, boots with grip, thermal layers and gloves in Tver or Moscow after arrival, with advice from senior students. See the winter packing list.

How to reach Tver from Kerala: no airport, train from Moscow
Tver has no passenger airport. Migalovo airfield, 10 km west of the city, is a military airlift base and we found no civil scheduled flights. The nearest working airports are the Moscow airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo), and Tver is about 160 km from Moscow. The Lastochka train takes about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min, and suburban trains also link Tver with Moscow on the main Moscow to Saint Petersburg line.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia: fly from Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Kozhikode (CCJ) to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then to Moscow, then the train. Because Moscow is so close, Tver students can reach the Embassy of India or a Moscow hospital in a short trip, which is unusual among Russian regional cities. Moscow airports have had repeated short suspensions during drone alerts in 2026, so keep a buffer before the train. Tver keeps Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India. The consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission.
Cost of living in Tver
We found no usable price data for Tver and no official student budget, so we give no monthly figure. It is a city of 416,219 people, smaller and probably cheaper than Moscow, with a tuition level of about ₹4.9 lakh for the first year in the 2026/27 order. The advantage of Tver is that Moscow is 1.5 hours away by train, so airport transfers are cheap compared with a city that needs a flight. Ask Tver SMU for the hostel fee and whether foreign first-year students get a room, then ask three senior Indian students for their monthly spending. See cost of living in Russia.
Indian students and food in Tver
Tver SMU is one of the main universities for Indian students: 1,854 of its graduates sat FMGE in 2022 to 2025, and as many as 532 in one year, so the Indian group is large. We could not verify a count of Malayali students or any Indian restaurants. Ask current students where they buy rice, spices and vegetables, and how often they go to Moscow for shopping, since it is close. More on Indian food in Russia.
Is Tver safe for Indian students?
Tver is not a border region with Ukraine and not in the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students in Tver. Check the advisory at mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep copies of your documents with your parents. Ask about hostel security. Never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
