MBBS in Vladikavkaz, Russia: North Ossetian State Medical Academy, Fees, Language, FMGE and North Caucasus Safety
Vladikavkaz is the capital of North Ossetia-Alania, a city of about 296,000 people at the foot of the Caucasus, 1,500 km from Moscow in a straight line. North Ossetian State Medical Academy (SOGMA) lists a first-year fee of 360,000 roubles for 2026-27, but its English-language course is only partly in English, which matters for NMC rules. This page covers the fee, the language problem, FMGE, travel and a source-based safety review.
In short: North Ossetian State Medical Academy (SOGMA) is a public university founded in 1939, in a North Caucasus capital. Its order of 28 April 2026 (No. 113/o) lists General Medicine at 360,000 roubles for the first year of 2026-27, about ₹4.1 lakh, but the table does not separate foreign students or the English group. The university describes its English programme as "partly English", so it may not meet the NMC rule of 54 months in English. FMGE: 123 of 550 passed (22.4%) in 2022–2025, 15th of 24. The airport is open but often restricted, and the region is in the North Caucasus.
Medical universities in Vladikavkaz, Russia
North Ossetian State Medical Academy (SOGMA, also North Ossetia State Medical Academy or Vladikavkaz Medical Academy) is a federal public university under the Russian Ministry of Health, founded in 1939. The address is Pushkinskaya Street 40, Vladikavkaz. The World Directory of Medical Schools lists it. Do not confuse it with North Ossetian State University (NOSU, founded 1920, nosu.ru); English Wikipedia redirects "North Ossetian State Medical Academy" to NOSU, so a search for the academy can land on the wrong university.
Fee. The academy's order of 28 April 2026, No. 113/o, on the cost of education for 2026-27 lists full-time General Medicine 31.05.01, first year, at 360,000 roubles, about ₹4.1 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. The table we saw does not separate the English-partial group or foreign citizens, so we cannot say that this is the fee for an Indian student. An agent puts the hostel at 36,000 roubles a year (about ₹41,000). The academy says foreign students are housed on the same basis as Russian students and that the legal cap on the hostel fee is 5% of the scholarship, without giving an amount. Ask for the signed fee, the hostel amount and the fees of years two to six.
Language, the central issue. The official SOGMA document "On admission of foreign citizens to educational programmes implemented partly in a foreign (English) language" covers General Medicine, Paediatrics and Pharmacy on paid places, and its education page lists the language as "partly English". The first-year foreign students of the English programme start the academic year on 1 November. Only part of the course is in English, so the course is not full English for NMC purposes. The NMC rules need at least 54 months in English and a 12-month internship at the same university; a course that is partly English may fall short. Ask SOGMA for the exact number of months taught in English and read the NMC rules before paying.
FMGE. NBEMS reports show 11 of 37 passing in 2022 (29.7%), 11 of 99 in 2023 (11.1%), 51 of 188 in 2024 (27.1%), 17 of 87 in June 2025 (19.5%) and 33 of 139 in December 2025 (23.7%). In total 123 of 550, or 22.4%, passed in 2022–2025, 15th of 24 in our FMGE ranking and slightly below the Russian average of about 25%. The number of candidates grew from 37 in 2022 to 188 in 2024, which suggests a growing Indian group.

The winter packing list has more.
How to reach Vladikavkaz from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then take a flight to Beslan Airport (OGZ) near Vladikavkaz, about 2.9 hours. A train from Moscow takes about 35 hours according to a travel guide, so most students fly. Vladikavkaz is about 1,500 km from Moscow in a straight line, the farthest city in this section after Makhachkala.
Beslan airport is open but has been restricted repeatedly: Caucasian Knot reported restrictions on 25 July 2025, in early December 2025 together with Grozny, Magas, Makhachkala and Nalchik, and in 2026 on 21 January and 30 March. Flights were delayed on 10 January 2026. Keep a flexible ticket and a buffer night in Moscow. Ask SOGMA who meets arrivals.

Is Vladikavkaz safe for Indian students? A North Caucasus review
Vladikavkaz is the capital of North Ossetia-Alania, in the North Caucasus. It is close to the Georgian border and to the republics of Ingushetia and Chechnya, but it is a separate region. Here is what the sources say, and what we did not find.
- Indian government: we found no advisory from India's Ministry of External Affairs or the Embassy in Moscow that names North Ossetia. The Embassy's notice of 14 August 2024 asked Indians in Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions to take precautions or relocate, and nothing wider. Check mea.gov.in and the Embassy site before travelling.
- UK Foreign Office: it advises against all travel to Russia and says terrorists are active in the North Caucasus, mainly in Dagestan, with counter-terrorism operations at short notice that may restrict travel. It describes its ability to help in the North Caucasus as very limited. Moscow is the nearest Indian mission, about 1,500 km away.
- Canada: its page for Russia, updated 18 June 2026, says the security situation in many areas of the North Caucasus is unstable and unpredictable, and that military operations in North Ossetia and Kabardino-Balkaria are carried out with little or no notice, with travel restrictions.
- Drones and airspace: Beslan airport was restricted repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, and in December 2025 a drone threat was declared across the North Caucasus republics.
- Incidents: we found no published attack on Indian students in Vladikavkaz.
A family can ask SOGMA in writing about hostel security and guards, what the procedure is during a counter-terrorism operation or drone alert, whether teaching continues, and how foreign students are told about travel limits. Do not travel to border areas, mountain districts or neighbouring republics without telling the academy; carry a copy of your passport and migration registration, because police checks are frequent; and register with the Embassy of India in Moscow. India's Ministry of External Affairs also warns against any offer of service in the Russian armed forces. In February 2026 a teenager injured four Indian students in a hostel at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa. Families who cannot accept North Caucasus conditions should look at Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod or Penza; see Is MBBS in Russia safe?.
