Medical universities in Arkhangelsk, Russia

Northern State Medical University is at Troitsky Ave. 51, the city's main avenue. English Wikipedia gives the opening as 4 August 1932 after an order of 2 October 1931, and Russian Wikipedia gives 16 December 1932; the university uses 1932. It was the Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute until 1994, then an academy until 2000. It is a state university under the Ministry of Health, and the World Directory of Medical Schools lists it with Russian and English as languages. Indians search for it as "Northern State Medical University Arkhangelsk", about 2,900 searches a month in India, so it is one of the best-known names in this group. Do not confuse it with Novosibirsk State Medical University, which also shortens to NSMU.

Fee. The university's English page on degree-programme fees lists "General Medicine for International Students, taught in English", full-time, six years, at 350,000 roubles for first-year students in 2026-27, about ₹4.0 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. The page covers only first-year entrants. Agents quote 340,000 roubles for 2026 and 320,000 for 2025, which are close but not official. They also give the hostel at 40,000 roubles a year in one case and 12,000 roubles for the first year in another, with food at about USD 1,200 a year; we could not confirm any of them. Ask for the later-year prices in writing, and ask whether the 350,000 is fixed for six years.

Language. The fees page calls the programme "taught in English", but we found no statement on whether Russian enters the later years, and agents say "English and Russian". The NMC rule needs at least 54 months in English and the clinical years have patient contact, so ask for the hours in each language. See the NMC rules.

FMGE. NSMU has one of the largest Indian cohorts among the universities in this series, and the results are steady but below average:

NBEMS FMGE reports. Over 2022–2025 combined: 598 of 2,654 passed, 22.5%.

The gap to the Russian average is small in some sessions and 6 points in December 2025. Three in four candidates still fail in a typical session, so a pass is never automatic. See the FMGE pass rate page and the ranking by FMGE results to compare universities.

Arkhangelsk weather for Kerala students

Arkhangelsk is the coolest city in this group in summer: our figures (1991–2020 normals) give a July mean of only 16.5 °C and a January mean of −11.6 °C. January is milder than in the Siberian cities, but the city is far enough north for very short winter days and the white nights of June. A mean hides the cold spells. The time zone is Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.

Illustration: winters in the Russian North are long and dark; budget for proper winter clothing in the first year.

For the first winter, buy a down jacket, insulated waterproof boots, a hat, gloves and thermal underwear. A student from Kerala should expect only a few hours of daylight in December and a cool summer. The winter packing list has the checklist.

Searches for "Arkhangelsk airport" are about this airport. An overnight train from Moscow takes about 22 hours. The city is 990 km from Moscow in a straight line. Ask the university whether it meets first-year students at the airport. See the admission process and NORKA attestation pages for documents.

Cost of living in Arkhangelsk

We found no official monthly cost for Arkhangelsk. The university's accommodation page exists but we did not read it, and the hostel figures above are agent numbers. Budget for tuition, hostel, medical insurance, food, a phone plan, transport and winter clothes, and ask three senior students for their real monthly spend. Keep a reserve of 10–20% for increases and the rouble–rupee rate (₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026). Add the cost of FMGE preparation, as most candidates need more than one attempt. The fees page compares tuition across cities.

Indian students and food in Arkhangelsk

We found no official count of Indian students. NBEMS shows 2,654 NSMU candidates in 2022–2025, so Indian graduates are many, and the Indian community is probably larger here than in most northern cities; that is an inference from exam entries, not a headcount. With 301,199 residents, Arkhangelsk is a small city, so ask where rice, spices and Indian vegetables are sold. Students cook in hostel kitchens. Ask the university or us for the contact of a Kerala student on the course. See Indian food in Russia and student life for Malayalis.

Is Arkhangelsk safe for Indian students?

Arkhangelsk is in the far north of European Russia, a long way from the border regions of Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk named in the Indian Embassy's August 2024 advice, and it is not in the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at NSMU. The main risks here are cold, ice and darkness: use anti-slip boots, wear reflective gear on dark roads and do not walk on frozen rivers. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the embassy after arrival and refuse any work offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
