MBBS in Saratov, Russia: Medical University, Fees, Weather, Travel and Safety for Indian Students
Saratov is a Volga city of about 900,000 people, 730 km south-east of Moscow in a straight line, and the home of Saratov State Medical University, founded in 1909. This page covers what a Kerala student should know before choosing it: the fee we could verify, FMGE results by year, winter and summer temperatures, the route from Kochi, living costs and the safety position in 2026.
In short: Saratov has one medical university for Indian students, Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky, a public university founded in 1909. The Study in Russia portal lists General Medicine in English at 5,700 US dollars (about ₹5.4 lakh) a year, and the university's own 2026-27 price order could not be read. Fewer than 300 of its graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, and 18.3% of them passed, below the Russian average of about 25%. The city has a working airport, but drone alerts are a fact of life on this stretch of the Volga.
Medical universities in Saratov, Russia
Saratov State Medical University (SSMU), also written Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky or Saratov Medical University, is the only university in the city that we list for Indian MBBS students. It is a federal public university under the Russian Ministry of Health. Wikipedia and the World Directory of Medical Schools both give 1909 as the year it began, as the medical faculty of the Imperial University, and it became a separate medical institute in 1930. The address is Bolshaya Kazachya Street 112, Saratov 410012. The WDOMS lists it, and it lists Russian and English as languages of instruction.
Fee. The Study in Russia portal (russia.study), which carries data supplied by universities, lists General Medicine 31.05.01 in English at 5,700 US dollars a year, about ₹5.4 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026, with a second English track at 5,550 dollars. The portal does not say which academic year the price belongs to, and a dollar price is unusual for a Russian state university, which normally bills in roubles. The university's own order No. 489-o of 15 May 2026 "on tuition cost 2026-2027" is listed on its website, but we could not read the amounts. An agent site quotes 432,000 roubles (about ₹4.9 lakh) for year one and 451,440 for year two, dropping to about 235,870 and then 204,420 from year three. We treat that as an agent figure. Please ask Saratov for the signed price for your intake and whether it is in roubles or dollars.
Language. The university's international page says the six-year programme is offered in Russian and in English medium. It does not say that all six years are in English, and the NMC rules need at least 54 months of study in English. Ask for the English-medium share of each year in writing. Compare this with the NMC rules before you pay a deposit.
FMGE. NBEMS reports show 20 of 73 Saratov graduates passing in 2022 (27.4%), 7 of 72 in 2023 (9.7%), 15 of 71 in 2024 (21.1%), 3 of 29 in June 2025 (10.3%) and 5 of 28 in December 2025 (17.9%). Together that is 50 of 273 in 2022–2025, or 18.3%, against about 25% for Russia as a whole. Because fewer than 300 candidates sat the exam, too few for a fair rate, Saratov is not placed in our FMGE ranking. Four of the five sessions were below the Russian average of the same session. The numbers are small, so one weak batch moves them a lot, but they do not support an easy FMGE pass.

Saratov weather for Kerala students
Saratov has a continental climate. The mean temperature is −7.6 °C in January and 22.9 °C in July (1991–2020 normals, Wikipedia). July is warm, but January is a different world from Kerala: frost and snow for months, and a daily mean below zero.
- Buy in Saratov, not in Kerala: a proper winter coat, insulated boots with grip, thermal underwear, gloves and a hat. Seniors know which shops to use and what fits the local cold.
- Bring from home: medicines you use regularly with prescriptions, a spare pair of spectacles, and documents in a waterproof folder.
- Time: Saratov is on Moscow time plus one hour, so it is 1.5 hours behind India. Evening calls home are easy.
Read the winter packing list before you buy anything in Kerala.
How to reach Saratov from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or Doha, or to Delhi, and then to Moscow. Saratov Gagarin International Airport (GSV) is open, and the Moscow–Saratov flight takes about 1.7 hours. A train from Moscow takes about 14 hours. Ask the international office which Moscow airport the group is meeting at and who receives the first-year students.
Airlines can change plans at short notice because of drone-related restrictions, so book a flexible onward ticket and allow a buffer day in Moscow. Saratov is about 730 km from Moscow in a straight line.
Cost of living in Saratov
We found no verified monthly cost-of-living figure for Saratov, and we do not quote a guess. What we can document is limited to university charges:
| Item | What we found |
|---|---|
| Tuition, General Medicine in English | 5,700 USD a year on the Study in Russia portal, about ₹5.4 lakh (year not stated) |
| Hostel | No price on the pages we could read; ask the university |
| Food, phone, local transport | No verified figure; ask three senior students for their last month's spending |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow, then Moscow to Saratov (about 1.7 h) or a train of about 14 h |
Plan for a reserve of 10–20% over the tuition for fee changes and for the rouble rate. See the fees comparison to place Saratov against other cities.
Indian students and food in Saratov
We found no published count of Indian or Malayali students at Saratov State Medical University, and no verified list of Indian shops or restaurants in the city. The old advisory of India's Ministry of External Affairs for students in Russia says hostels at many universities do not offer boarding and students are generally expected to cook their own food. Ask the university whether the hostel has kitchens on each floor, and ask a senior student where rice, lentils and spices are bought. Our page on Indian food in Russia explains what students usually do.
Is Saratov safe for Indian students?
Saratov is not in the North Caucasus, but it is on the Volga across from Engels, a city with a major Russian air base. Governor Roman Busargin confirmed drone attacks on Engels on the night of 15–16 July 2026 and said civilian buildings were damaged, according to Ukrainska Pravda. Alerts reach Saratov too, and debris from downed drones can cause damage and injuries in the city. Follow the university's instructions and keep away from windows during an alert.
The wider picture for Russia matters too. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia. India's Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly warned Indians against accepting offers that lead to service in the Russian armed forces. In February 2026 a teenager attacked students in a hostel of Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa, injuring four Indian students; the case is under investigation. Racist attacks on foreign students are rare in absolute terms, but they happen, so students should not walk alone at night, should keep a copy of the passport, and should register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow.
