Ivanovo State Medical University and Life in Ivanovo: MBBS Fee, FMGE, Weather and Travel for Indian Students
Ivanovo is a textile city of about 362,000 people, 250 km north-east of Moscow and about 3 hours 40 minutes from it by Lastochka train. Ivanovo State Medical University, founded in 1930, lists a first-year fee of 285,000 roubles for 2025-26, about ₹3.2 lakh. Its FMGE record is weak so far, and this page gives the numbers and the questions to ask.
In short: Ivanovo State Medical University (formerly Ivanovo State Medical Academy) is a public university founded in 1930, in a city about 250 km from Moscow. Its official page lists the first year of General Medicine, English medium, at 285,000 roubles for 2025-26, about ₹3.2 lakh, up from 249,850 roubles the year before. Over 2022–2025 only 14 of 114 graduates passed FMGE, 12.3%, against about 25% for Russia, though the December 2025 session improved to 23.3%. Winter is cold, with a January mean of −8.7 °C.
Medical universities in Ivanovo, Russia
Ivanovo State Medical University (IvSMU) is the same institution that FMGE reports and many websites call Ivanovo State Medical Academy; a university brochure says it was renamed a university in 2024. It is a federal public university under the Russian Ministry of Health, founded in 1930, at Sheremetevsky Avenue 8, Ivanovo. Postal codes differ between sources (153012 in the World Directory of Medical Schools, 153462 on Russian Wikipedia), so copy the address from your admission letter. The WDOMS lists the university.
Fee by year of study. The university's fee page lists "General Medicine – English medium" with a price for each year of study in 2025-26: 285,000 roubles for year 1, 261,093 for year 2, 253,502 for year 3, 237,238 for years 4 and 5 and 223,650 for year 6. Year 1 is about ₹3.2 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. These are the prices charged to each course this year, not a plan for one new student, so do not add them up as a six-year bill. For comparison, year 1 was 249,850 roubles in 2024-25, so the first-year price rose about 14% in a year. The same page lists a preparatory course at 142,120 roubles, a yearly medical examination for foreigners at 6,900 roubles (about ₹7,800) and health insurance at 4,900 roubles a year (about ₹5,500). We could not read a 2026-27 price. Ask the university how much it expects to raise tuition each year.
Language. The page does not say that all six years are in English, and an aggregator says English is used with Russian taught for the internship. Because the NMC rules need 54 months of study in English and a 12-month internship, get the English and Russian share of each year in writing. The NMC rules page explains the test.
FMGE. NBEMS reports list 3 Ivanovo candidates in 2022 (0 passed), 24 in 2023 (1, or 4.2%), 39 in 2024 (5, or 12.8%), 18 in June 2025 (1, or 5.6%) and 30 in December 2025 (7, or 23.3%). In total 14 of 114 passed, which is 12.3%, against about 25% for Russia as a whole. December 2025 is still below the Russian average of 30.9% for the session, although it is the best result so far. The numbers are small, so one batch moves them a lot. The university is not in our FMGE ranking: fewer than 300 candidates sat the exam in 2022–2025, too few for a fair rate.

Ivanovo weather for Kerala students
Ivanovo is cold in winter and cool in summer. The English Wikipedia text, quoting Meteoinfo norms for an unstated period, gives a mean of −8.7 °C in January and 18.9 °C in July; a table on the Russian Wikipedia from other sources gives −12.0 °C and 18.8 °C. Plan for the colder figure, as the central Russian winter is long.
- Clothing: a long insulated coat, thermal wear, waterproof boots with grip, gloves and a hat. Buy after arrival with senior students' advice.
- Summer: mild, with a July mean below 19 °C, so carry a jacket even then.
- Time: Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
The winter packing list has the details.
How to reach Ivanovo from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia. Fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi. Ivanovo Yuzhny Airport (IWA) is open, with regional flights to Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Mineralnye Vody and Makhachkala, but we found no Moscow route. The usual way from Moscow is the Lastochka train, about 3 hours 40 minutes. Ivanovo is about 250 km from Moscow in a straight line.
Ask the international office whether it sends someone to the Moscow station or airport, and which Moscow terminal and station your train leaves from.

Indian students and food in Ivanovo
We found no count of Indian or Malayali students at IvSMU and no verified Indian shops. The group is probably small: 114 graduates sat FMGE in four years. Ivanovo is a smaller city, so plan to cook in the hostel, and check the customs rules before you pack spices; Indian food in Russia explains the usual approach. Ask the university to link you to two current Indian students, preferably from Kerala, and ask where they buy rice and vegetables.
Is Ivanovo safe for Indian students?
Ivanovo is in central Russia, not in a border region and not in the North Caucasus. It is not named in the Indian Embassy's August 2024 notice for Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk. We found no published attack on Indian students in Ivanovo. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia and warns of drone attacks, airspace closures and detentions. India's Ministry of External Affairs asks Indians not to accept offers that lead to service in the Russian military.
In February 2026 a teenager injured four Indian students in a hostel at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa; the case is under investigation. Racist attacks are rare, but a small foreign group should still avoid walking alone late at night, ask about the hostel entrance guard, carry copies of the passport and registration and register with the Embassy of India in Moscow.
