MBBS in Smolensk, Russia: University, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students

Smolensk, in western Russia near the border with Belarus, 370 km from Moscow, has one university on this site that teaches medicine to foreign students: Smolensk State Medical University (SSMU). Agents quote about USD 5,500 a year, about ₹5.2 lakh. Its graduates passed FMGE at 35.4% in 2022 to 2025, third among the 24 universities with at least 300 candidates. Smolensk has no passenger flights, so students take the train from Moscow. This page gives the fee, the record, the weather, the route and the questions to ask.

In short: Smolensk is a city of 316,570 people (2021 census) on the Moscow to Brest railway line, with no scheduled passenger flights. The Lastochka train from Moscow takes about 4 hours. Agents quote USD 5,500 a year (about ₹5.2 lakh), which we could not confirm on an official price list. SSMU passed 861 of 2,434 FMGE candidates in 2022 to 2025 (35.4%), well above the Russian average of about 25%. The January mean is −5.8 °C, one of the milder winters among Russian university cities.

Medical university in Smolensk, Russia

Smolensk State Medical University (SSMU, Krupskoy St. 28) is the only medical university in Smolensk on this site. It dates from a medical faculty founded in 1920 and has carried the name "university" since 2015. Fees are converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026.

Fee. The only tuition figure we found is USD 5,500 a year (about ₹5.2 lakh), published on agent pages for 2024/25 and 2026 without a clear year; the same agent tables give a hostel of USD 350 a year (about ₹33,300) and one agent says the hostel is included in the fee. We could not read an official price list, so treat these as agent figures and ask SSMU for the price list for foreign citizens and for what the fee includes. A fee quoted in dollars also moves with the rouble-dollar rate, so ask which currency the contract uses.

Language. The official 2026/27 admission page has a paid-places column for foreign citizens "studying with the use of English" in General Medicine; a search excerpt shows 658 paid places, of which 480 for foreigners with English. The record of the World Directory of Medical Schools, in a search excerpt, gives the language of instruction as Russian and English. "Using English" does not by itself mean all six years, including clinical rotations, are in English, so get that in writing from SSMU.

FMGE. 34.9% passed in 2022 (161 of 461), 25.3% in 2023 (138 of 546), 42.9% in 2024 (321 of 748), 22.1% in June 2025 (55 of 249) and 43.3% in December 2025 (186 of 430). Over 2022 to 2025, 861 of 2,434 passed (35.4%), third of 24 universities in our ranking, and above the Russian average in every session. The number of candidates is large, so it is a firmer signal than a result from a small group. See the FMGE pass rate page and compare with Tver, which is also reached by train from Moscow and has a lower record.

Smolensk: 370 km from Moscow in a straight line; local time is 2.5 h behind India.

Smolensk has no scheduled passenger flights. Smolensk North (LNX) is a former military base, and Smolensk South stopped commercial service in the early 2000s; Russian press reports a reconstruction of Smolensk North planned for 2026 to 2028. The nearest working airports are the Moscow airports, about 370 km away in a straight line. The Lastochka train from Moscow takes about 4 hours on the Moscow to Brest line.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia: fly from Kochi (COK), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Kozhikode (CCJ) to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then to Moscow, then the train. Moscow airports had repeated short suspensions in 2026 during drone alerts, so allow a buffer before the train. Smolensk keeps Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India. The Russian consulate for the student visa is in Chennai; see admission.

Cost of living in Smolensk

We found no usable price data for Smolensk and no official student budget, so we give no monthly figure. It is a small city of 316,570 people, and food, transport and rent are likely lower than in Moscow. Add the cost of the train from Moscow on every trip. Ask SSMU for the exact hostel fee, and whether it is included in tuition as one agent claims, then ask senior Indian students for their monthly spending. See cost of living in Russia.

Indian students and food in Smolensk

The Study in Russia portal says SSMU has about 2,600 foreign students from 10 countries (a search excerpt gives 2,575 in 2025) among 6,900 students. No count of Indian students is published, but 2,434 SSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022 to 2025, and 748 in 2024, so the Indian group is large and long-established. We found no verified Indian restaurants. Ask SSMU or us for contacts of current students from Kerala and ask where they buy rice and spices. More on Indian food in Russia.

Is Smolensk safe for Indian students?

Smolensk is in the west, near the border with Belarus. It is not on the border with Ukraine, and the August 2024 advisory of the Embassy of India named the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions, not Smolensk. But the Smolensk region adjoins Bryansk, so drone alerts and airport restrictions in western Russia are a fair question to put to the university. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at SSMU. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival, keep copies of your documents with your parents and ask about hostel security and shelter arrangements. Never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
