MBBS in Chelyabinsk, Russia: Universities, Cost of Living and Life for Indian Students
Chelyabinsk is an industrial city of 1,189,525 people in the southern Urals, 1,490 km from Moscow, and it is the home of South Ural State Medical University. We found no official price list and no official statement that the university runs an English-medium General Medicine course for foreigners, only an agent quote of 330,000 roubles a year (about ₹3.7 lakh), so this page is a checklist of what to verify before you consider it.
In short: Chelyabinsk, Russia, has one medical university in our list, South Ural State Medical University (SUSMU), founded in 1944. We found no official fee list and no official English-medium General Medicine page; an agent quotes 330,000 roubles a year (about ₹3.7 lakh) with a 35,000-rouble hostel, and Russian course catalogues list the faculty as Russian-language. NBEMS shows no FMGE results under its name. The January mean is −14.9 °C, and Chelyabinsk is 2.6 hours by air from Moscow. Treat it as unconfirmed until the university answers in writing.
Medical universities in Chelyabinsk, Russia
South Ural State Medical University (SUSMU) is at Vorovskogo St. 64. It was founded on 1 July 1944 as the Chelyabinsk Medical Institute, later called the Chelyabinsk State Medical Academy (1995–2012), and took its present name in 2012. It is a state university under the Ministry of Health. Indian searches use "Chelyabinsk State Medical University" and "Chelyabinsk Medical University"; it is the same institution. The official domain in Russian sources is chelsma.ru; a newer domain has not been verified.
What we could not confirm. This is a low-confidence entry, and it is better to say so than to guess:
- Fee. The archived price page links only a 2021 procedure for paid services and no price orders for 2025-26. The one figure we have is an agent's: tuition 330,000 roubles and hostel 35,000 roubles a year, the same for six years, about ₹3.7 lakh and ₹40,000 at the rate of 15 October 2026. Another agent site lists USD 3,000 a year (about ₹2.9 lakh) and calls the programme "bilingual". The two do not agree.
- English. We found no official English-medium General Medicine page for foreigners. The university's site we could reach shows an e-learning portal with a Foreign Students Department, nothing more. Russian-language course lists show the faculty as Russian-language.
- WDOMS and FMGE. A search found no WDOMS record for SUSMU, which is not proof of absence. NBEMS reports for 2020–2025 have no rows under its name, so there is no pass rate to compare with the Russian average of about 25%.
If the university does accept Indian students in English, the next questions are the same as anywhere: the programme code 31.05.01, the fee in a signed contract for your intake, English in every year (the NMC needs 54 months), the 12-month internship at the same university, and the licence to practise in Russia. Read the NMC rules and see the FMGE pass rate page for universities that publish results. If the university cannot answer these in writing, look at Yekaterinburg or Tyumen, which are in the same part of the Urals, or compare on the medical colleges page.

Chelyabinsk weather for Kerala students
Chelyabinsk lies in the southern Urals. English Wikipedia's climate table (period not stated) gives a January mean of −14.9 °C and a July mean of 19.3 °C; Russian Wikipedia gives −14.1 and 19.3. A mean hides the cold snaps, so plan for the coldest days. The time zone is Moscow plus 2 hours, 0.5 hours behind India.

Winter in Chelyabinsk needs a down jacket, insulated boots with grip, a hat, gloves and thermal underwear. Ask senior students which shops they use. Our winter packing list gives the full list. Many Indian searches for Chelyabinsk are about the meteor that burst over the city on 15 February 2013. It was a one-off event with no bearing on student life today.
How to reach Chelyabinsk from Kerala
Kurchatov Chelyabinsk International Airport (CEK) at Balandino is operating. There is no direct flight from Kerala to Russia, so fly from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then about 2.6 hours to Chelyabinsk. Trains from Moscow take about 32 hours on the fastest listing (31 h 49 min), and a direct service is listed at about 41 hours. The city is 1,490 km from Moscow in a straight line. We have not checked whether any airline connects Chelyabinsk to the Gulf or Delhi. Documents are explained in the admission process and NORKA attestation pages.
Cost of living in Chelyabinsk
We found no verified monthly cost for Chelyabinsk. The agent hostel figure of 35,000 roubles a year (about ₹40,000) is unverified. Build the budget from tuition (only after you have an official figure), the hostel in writing, medical insurance, food, a phone plan, local transport and winter clothes. Ask three senior students for their real monthly spend. A reserve of 10–20% for increases and the rouble–rupee rate (₹1.132 per rouble on 15 October 2026) is sensible. See the fees page to compare with cities where an official price exists.
Indian students and food in Chelyabinsk
We found no count of Indian students at SUSMU and no verified source on Indian shops or restaurants in the city. A city of 1.2 million will have large supermarkets, but we cannot say whether rice, spices and Indian vegetables are easy to find. Students cook in hostel kitchens, and senior students tell newcomers where to shop. Before paying anything, ask for the phone number of a current Indian student, preferably a Malayali, and ask whether the course they follow is in English or in Russian. See Indian food in Russia.
