Medical university in Barnaul, Russia

Altai State Medical University (ASMU, founded 1954, Lenin Avenue 40) is the only medical university in Barnaul that we cover. Do not confuse it with Altai State University, a different institution. Fees are converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026.

Fee. ASMU's admission table for foreign students (2025 campaign, no order number shown) gives 357,300 roubles a year for General Medicine on the intermediary-language (English) line, about ₹4.0 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate, and 282,700 roubles for foreigners studying in Russian. Six years at the English-line price would be about 2,143,800 roubles, about ₹24 lakh (first year × 6, our estimate). The hostel is an agent figure only, 80,000 to 90,000 roubles a year (about ₹90,500 to ₹101,900). Agents also quote 301,775 and 380,000 roubles for tuition; treat those as older or different figures and ask ASMU for the contract fee.

Language. The page of the Faculty of Foreign Students lists two six-year programmes: "General Medicine English-medium" and "General Medicine bilingual". The dean says the English-medium track was introduced in 2023, so it is new. The bilingual track includes Russian, and Russian Wikipedia gives 320 students in bilingual programmes. We could not read whether the English-medium track is English for all six years, including clinical rotations. The NMC requires English throughout, so ask ASMU to confirm that your group is on the English-medium track, in writing, and which track the fee applies to.

FMGE. 34.3% passed in 2022 (37 of 108), 22.1% in 2023 (46 of 208), 22.3% in 2024 (56 of 251), 17.8% in June 2025 (19 of 107) and 24.8% in December 2025 (33 of 133). Over 2022 to 2025, 191 of 807 passed (23.7%), against about 25% for Russia overall. The result is near the average, with a sample large enough to take seriously. Note that most graduates in these reports studied before the English-medium track began in 2023, so they do not necessarily reflect it. See the FMGE pass rate page and compare with Kemerovo, another Siberian option.

Barnaul weather for Kerala students

The January mean in Barnaul is −16.2 °C and the July mean is 19.9 °C (1991 to 2020). That is about ten degrees colder than Moscow in January. Winter is long and the cold is sustained, and the first-year clothing budget is higher than in the Volga cities: a down jacket rated for deep cold, insulated boots, thermal layers, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Buy them in Barnaul after arrival and ask seniors what they used. Hostels, lecture halls and hospitals are heated. Read the winter packing list.

Summers are warm and pleasant, with a July mean of 19.9 °C, and the Altai Mountains to the south are the region's holiday destination. We have no verified details of student trips, so ask current students.

Cost of living in Barnaul

We found no usable price data for Barnaul and no official student budget, so we give no monthly figure. It is a city of 630,877 people, and food and transport are likely cheaper than in Moscow. The costs that stand out are the hostel (agent figures only), heavy winter clothing and the flights to Moscow and back, which are the main reason Siberian students go home less often. Indian students and food in Barnaul

There is no official count of Indian students at ASMU. Russian Wikipedia gives about 350 foreign students in 2015 (not India-specific). The FMGE reports show 807 ASMU candidates in 2022 to 2025, rising from 108 in 2022 to 251 in 2024, so the Indian group has grown. We found no verified Indian restaurants. Is Barnaul safe for Indian students?

Barnaul is in southern Siberia, thousands of kilometres from the border with Ukraine and far from the North Caucasus. We know of no published incident involving Indian students at ASMU. The practical risks are the cold and the distance from help. Check mea.gov.in before each trip, register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival, keep copies of your documents with your parents, and ask about hostel security and emergency contacts. Never accept a job or contract offer connected with the military. See is MBBS in Russia safe.
