Ivanovo State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Ivanovo State Medical University, until 2024 Ivanovo State Medical Academy, is a state medical school 250 km north-east of Moscow, with a published first-year fee of 285,000 roubles for 2025-26 (₹3.2 lakh). Its graduates passed FMGE at 12.3% over 2022–2025, on few candidates. This page gives the fee list by course, the hostel, the exam record and what a Kerala student should ask.

In short: Ivanovo State Medical University (formerly Ivanovo State Medical Academy) is a state university founded in 1930 in Ivanovo, in the Golden Ring north-east of Moscow. The university's list gives 285,000 roubles (about ₹3.2 lakh) for the first year of English-medium General Medicine in 2025-26. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 12.3% (14 of 114 candidates), against a Russian average of about 25%. The university lists an English-medium course but does not state that all six years are in English, so ask for it in writing.

Ivanovo State Medical University is the medical school of the Ivanovo region. It was founded in 1930 as Ivanovo State Medical Institute, became Ivanovo State Medical Academy in 1994 and, according to a university brochure, was renamed a university in 2024. People still search for it as "Ivanovo State Medical Academy", and the name appears on older documents, so it is the same institution. It is a federal state institution under the Ministry of Health, at Sheremetevsky Avenue 8, Ivanovo. It is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS, listing F0000076).

The university's pages for foreign students list a "General Medicine, English medium" course by year of study, together with the Russian-language course. We found no official count of Indian students, so we cannot say how large the group is. The international office email given on the university site is [email protected].

Ivanovo State Medical University fees for Indian students

The university publishes its fees for foreign students by year of study, which is more useful than a single headline figure. For students admitted in 2025-26 the first-year tuition is 285,000 roubles; in 2024-25 the first-year fee was 249,850 roubles, so the fee rose by about 14% in one year. We could not read a 2026-27 price list. The same university page lists a preparatory course at 142,120 roubles.

The table above simply multiplies the first-year fee by six (about ₹19 lakh) and adds the hostel; it is a planning figure, not a price. The university's 2025-26 list shows what students in each course pay that year, not what a new student will pay later:

Do not add the column up as your six-year cost: the later-year prices are those of older cohorts, and tuition here is indexed every year. The sensible planning figure is the first-year fee with a reserve of 10–20% for increases and the rouble-rupee rate. Ask the university whether your contract fixes the fee for the whole course.

Compare Ivanovo with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At ₹3.2 lakh a year it is among the lowest first-year fees in our list.

Living cost in Ivanovo

Besides the items above, a student's monthly budget in Ivanovo is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, study material and winter clothing. The university's own estimate of hostel 2,000–2,500 roubles plus transport 2,000–2,500 roubles a month (about ₹4,500–5,700 together) shows these two items are small compared with tuition. We have no verified food price for Ivanovo; ask senior students for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget.

Hostel and hostel fees

The university gives the hostel fee as 2,000 to 2,500 roubles a month, about ₹2,300 to ₹2,800, which is 24,000–30,000 roubles for a twelve-month year (₹0.27–0.34 lakh). An agent quotes about US$285 a year, much lower, and another US$404, so use the university's figure. Rooms for foreign students are normally shared, normally with shared kitchens. Ask the international office how many students share a room, whether the fee is paid for twelve months, and whether a place in the first year is certain.

Parents often ask about the girls hostel. We found no Ivanovo statement on it. Ask how rooms are allocated, whether female students are placed together, what the entrance security is and how far the hostel is from the teaching buildings and clinics.

NEET cut-off and eligibility

The university does not set a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score that we could find. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

We found no published entrance exam for foreign applicants. Ask whether the university holds an interview or a test in biology and chemistry. There is no published acceptance rate. Students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted, so the real filter is FMGE six years later, and the FMGE record below makes this the main question. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at Ivanovo State Medical University

  1. Apply and send documents

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the university's international office, directly or through us.

  2. Admission letter and contract

The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.

  3. Invitation and visa

The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Ivanovo

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then take the fast Lastochka train to Ivanovo. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.

Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.

Ranking and recognition

Families search for the Ivanovo State Medical Academy ranking, its world ranking and its official website. We could not verify a ranking position for it, in Russia or globally. The official site is ivgmu.ru, and the foreign-student page is ivgmu.ru/articles/15. Three things matter more for an Indian student than a ranking:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask the university for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. The university is listed in WDOMS (F0000076). Check the entry yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

FMGE passing percentage of Ivanovo State Medical University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. The numbers for Ivanovo are small and low. In 2022, none of 3 candidates passed; in 2023, 1 of 24 (4.2%) against a Russian average of 19.4%; in 2024, 5 of 39 (12.8%) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 1 of 18 passed (5.6%) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 7 of 30 (23.3%) against 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, 14 of 114 candidates passed, 12.3% against about 25% for Russia. Ivanovo has fewer than 300 candidates in those four years, so it is not ranked in our ranking.

SessionAppearedPassedPass rate
December 202530723.3%
June 20251815.6%
202439512.8%
20232414.2%
2022300.0%
Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

December 2025 is the best result on record and the only one near the Russian average, and a single batch of 30 is a small sample, so we would not read it as a trend. Every session was below the Russian average. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing as FMGE. Compare Ivanovo with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page, and ask the university what FMGE support it gives Indian students.

Safety in Ivanovo for Indian students

Ivanovo is in central Russia, about 250 km from Moscow in a straight line, far from the Ukrainian border and not one of the three regions (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk) where the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians take precautions and relocate temporarily. We found no safety incident at the university or in the city. As anywhere in Russia, we suggest:

  • Ask about hostel security: guards, entry control and cameras.
  • Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival.
  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

The everyday risks are ice in winter and, as a foreigner, the occasional document check by police: carry a copy of your passport and migration card.

Life in Ivanovo for Kerala students

Ivanovo is a city of 361,644 people (2021 census) in the Golden Ring of old Russian towns, a quiet, small-city setting. Winters are cold: long-term averages are −8.7 °C in January and 18.9 °C in July, and a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear are needed from the first year. Being close to Moscow helps: the capital is a short train ride away for shopping and for the embassy.

We found no verified information on Malayali students or on Indian restaurants in Ivanovo. Most Indian students in smaller cities cook in the hostel kitchen. Ask the university how many Indian students are enrolled now, and ask us: we can connect you with families whose children are already in Russia.

Ivanovo: 250 km from Moscow in a straight line; local time is 2.5 h behind India.

Ivanovo State Medical University is in Ivanovo, in the Golden Ring. The distance from Ivanovo to Moscow is about 250 km in a straight line, and the Lastochka train takes about 3 hours 40 minutes. The nearest airport is Ivanovo Yuzhny Airport (IWA), which is operating, with regional flights to Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Mineralnye Vody and Makhachkala but no Moscow route that we found. Most students therefore arrive at a Moscow airport and take the train.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then the train to Ivanovo. Ivanovo time is 2.5 hours behind India. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no university scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the university for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. One agent says English medium is used with Russian taught for the internship; the university does not state this. Clinical training involves Russian-speaking patients, so basic Russian in the first two years helps. The programmes we can confirm are General Medicine in English and in Russian, and a preparatory course.

Ivanovo compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting Ivanovo usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025

Perm State Medical UniversityPerm₹4.1 lakh (price order, English track, 2025-26)27.7%
Altai State Medical UniversityBarnaul₹4.0 lakh (university table, 2025)23.7%
Kabardino-Balkarian State UniversityNalchik₹2.8 lakh (agent figure)25.5%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. The Kabardino-Balkarian figure is an agent quote and its university's foreigner price list was not found; Altai's comes from its 2025 admission table. Confirm current fees with each university.

At a similar or lower fee, Kabardino-Balkarian has had FMGE results about twice Ivanovo's; Altai (about ₹0.8 lakh a year dearer on its own table) about twice, and Perm (about ₹0.9 lakh dearer) more than twice. Ivanovo's strengths are a published fee list by year, a low hostel cost and proximity to Moscow; its FMGE record is the weakness.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

The university awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. Degree documents are attested through the MEA apostille and, in Kerala, via NORKA Roots.
