Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky (SSMU) is a public medical university founded in 1909 in Saratov, on the Volga. A Study in Russia portal lists English-language General Medicine at US$5,700 a year (about ₹5.4 lakh), and the university's own 2026-27 price order exists but we could not read the amounts. Here are the fees we can source, the FMGE results year by year, the hostel questions and the English-medium status.
In short: SSMU is a public medical university in Saratov, founded in 1909. A Study in Russia portal lists the English-language General Medicine programme at US$5,700 a year (about ₹5.4 lakh); an agent lists 432,000 roubles (about ₹4.9 lakh) for the first year. The university's own 2026-27 price order could not be read, so ask for it. Over 2022–2025 its graduates passed FMGE at a combined 18.3% of 273 candidates, below the Russian average of about 25%. The official site lists Russian and English as languages of instruction but does not say English covers all six years.

Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky is a federal state budgetary institution under the Russian Ministry of Health, so it is a public university, not a private college. It traces its history to the medical faculty of the Imperial University in Saratov, opened in 1909; Wikipedia and WDOMS both give that year. It became the Saratov State Medical Institute in 1930 and became a university after 1993. The official address is Bolshaya Kazachya Street 112, Saratov 410012, and the official website is sgmu.ru, with an English section at sgmu.ru/en. Many sites call it the Saratov Medical University; the full name on your admission letter should read Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky.
The English section has a Department of International Education, and the page for General Medicine says the programme lasts six years and the language of instruction is "Russian, English". WDOMS also lists Russian and English, and the university is registered there. We found no official count of Indian students or of students from Kerala. The FMGE reports show that 273 Saratov graduates sat the exam in 2022–2025, a mid-sized Indian group.
People search for Saratov State Medical University photos. We show no campus photo on this page because we have not found one with a licence we can use. The university's website has an official gallery; look at it, and ask current students to send you recent pictures of the hostel and the hospital where they train.

Saratov State Medical University fees for Indian students
SSMU sets its tuition in roubles for Russian students, but the figure most often quoted to foreigners is in US dollars. We have three sources, and they do not agree:
- Study in Russia portal (russia.study): General Medicine 31.05.01, language English, tuition US$5,700, about ₹5.4 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. A second English track is listed at US$5,550. The portal does not say whether this is per year or for a different period, and it lists a general specialty average of US$3,500 a year, so we treat US$5,700 as the first-year fee and not as a contract price.
- University order: the university's Order No. 489-o of 15 May 2026 "on tuition cost 2026-2027" is listed on its official paid-services page, but we could not read the amounts. This is the document that decides your fee, so ask for it.
- Agent figures: one agent lists 432,000 roubles for the first year (about ₹4.9 lakh) and year-wise 432,000, 451,440, 235,870, 235,870, 204,420 and 204,420. We cannot link this to a university document, so treat it as a rumour of a pattern, not a price list.
SSMU fee structure 2026-27
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years (agent figure) | ₹32.5 lakh |
The table above multiplies the portal figure by six: about ₹5.4 lakh a year and about ₹33 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. The figure comes from a portal listing, not from the university's price order, and the table labels it as an agent figure, so take it as an indication. Plan with a reserve of 10–20% for fee increases and the rouble-rupee rate, and ask the university for the 2026-27 order, the English-track fee for each year and the hostel fee in one written offer.
For a Kerala family: a Kerala government MBBS seat costs about ₹23,150 a year in tuition, a self-financing seat about ₹8.1 lakh a year (one college's 2025-26 provisional fee was ₹8,10,175) and an NRI seat about ₹22.7 lakh a year. SSMU tuition at the portal figure sits below the self-financing fee and in the middle of Russian universities.
| Cost item | What we know for SSMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, English track | US$5,700 on a portal listing; the university order for 2026-27 not readable |
| Hostel | Not published on pages we could read; one agent snippet says about US$360 (₹35,000) a year |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask what it covers |
| Food | Mostly cooked in hostel kitchens; no verified monthly figure for Saratov |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then about 1.7 hours by air to Saratov |
Compare SSMU with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page.
Living cost in Saratov
A student's monthly budget in Saratov is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel kitchen), a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing in the first year. Saratov is a large regional city of about 901,000 people (2021 census), and regional cities are generally cheaper than Moscow or Saint Petersburg. We have no verified monthly figures for Saratov, so we give none. Ask senior Indian students for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget.
SSMU hostel and hostel fees
We found no hostel fee or room description on the university pages we could read. One agent snippet mentions about ₹35,000 (US$360) a year, but we could not identify the page, so please do not budget from it. Ask the international office, in writing, for the fee, the room type, how many students share, the kitchen arrangements, the distance to the classes and the teaching hospitals, and whether a place is kept for all six years.
Parents often ask about the girls hostel at Saratov State Medical University. Russian university residences usually allocate rooms or floors by gender, but the rules differ. Ask how female students are placed, what security there is at the entrance and who can visit.
NEET cut-off and eligibility for SSMU
We found no NEET cut-off set by SSMU above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
The university may hold an entrance test or interview for foreign applicants; the format is not published in the sources we read. There is no published acceptance rate. In practice, applicants who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted, and the real filter is FMGE six years later. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Groups for foreign students usually start in September. Apply soon after the NEET result, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.
Ranking and recognition: SSMU ranking and world ranking
Families search for the Saratov State Medical University ranking and world ranking. We found no placement in the main global rankings for medicine. Wikipedia mentions a Times Higher Education 2021 listing among the top 300 in the "good health and well-being" category; it is a secondary source and a thematic list, so we do not treat it as a ranking of the medical school. Rankings also say little about what matters to an Indian student. Three things matter more:
- NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask SSMU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
- World Directory of Medical Schools. SSMU is listed in WDOMS with Russian and English as languages of instruction. Check the listing yourself.
- FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.
India's Ministry of External Affairs has published a general advisory on Russian medical education (mea.gov.in). It warns that institutions often teach the first years in English with Russian alongside and expect Russian from about year 4. Read it before you decide, because it applies to SSMU as much as to other universities.
FMGE passing percentage of Saratov State Medical University
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. SSMU graduates were above the Russian average in 2020 to 2022 and below it in the last four sessions. In 2022, 27.4% passed (20 of 73) against a Russian average of 26.0%. In 2023, 9.7% passed (7 of 72) against 19.4%; in 2024, 21.1% (15 of 71) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 10.3% passed (3 of 29) against 18.1%, and in December 2025 17.9% (5 of 28) against 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, 50 of 273 candidates passed, which is 18.3%, below the Russian combined figure of about 25%. In 2020 it was 21.7% (13 of 60) and in 2021 26.7% (16 of 60).
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 28 | 5 | 17.9% |
| June 2025 | 29 | 3 | 10.3% |
| 2024 | 71 | 15 | 21.1% |
| 2023 | 72 | 7 | 9.7% |
| 2022 | 73 | 20 | 27.4% |
| 2021 | 60 | 16 | 26.7% |
| 2020 | 60 | 13 | 21.7% |
With fewer than 300 candidates in four years, SSMU is not in our ranking of larger universities. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same exam. Compare SSMU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page and in the ranking by FMGE results. The downward trend after 2022 is worth asking about: was it the language of teaching, the size of the cohort, or something else? Ask the university and its recent Indian graduates.
Safety in Saratov
Saratov is on the lower Volga, about 730 km from Moscow in a straight line, and is not on the Ukrainian border. It is not one of the regions in the August 2024 advisory, when the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised Indians in the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions to take precautions and relocate temporarily. We found no published report of an incident involving SSMU's students. The war has meant drone strikes and short airport closures in cities far from the border, so a family should stay current. What we suggest:
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel and before each return from holidays.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in the phone.
- Ask the university what the hostel's entry control and emergency arrangements are.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Saratov for Kerala students
Saratov is a university city on the Volga with about 901,000 people (2021 census). The winter is cold but not extreme: the January mean is about −7.6 °C and the July mean about 22.9 °C (1991–2020 averages), so summers are warmer than in Moscow. Buy a proper winter jacket, boots and thermals in the first autumn. Saratov is one hour ahead of Moscow, which makes it only one and a half hours behind India.
We have no verified information on Indian groceries, restaurants or the size of the Malayali group in Saratov. Ask the university for contacts of current Indian students, and ask us to connect you with a Malayalam-speaking counsellor. Most Indian students cook in the hostel kitchen, so ask seniors what is sold locally.

Where SSMU is: distance to Moscow and how to reach Saratov from Kerala
Saratov State Medical University is in Saratov, in the lower Volga region. The distance from Saratov to Moscow is about 730 km in a straight line. The nearest airport is Saratov Gagarin International Airport (GSV), which is operating; a flight from Moscow takes about 1.7 hours. A train from Moscow takes about 14 hours.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Saratov. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no SSMU scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on education-in-russia.com; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask SSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The programme we found for foreign students on the official site is General Medicine; ask about other programmes.
SSMU compared with similar universities
Families shortlisting SSMU usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saratov State Medical University | Saratov | ₹5.4 lakh (portal figure) | 18.3% |
| Kazan State Medical University | Kazan | ₹5.4 lakh | 30.5% |
| Privolzhsky Research Medical University | Nizhny Novgorod | ₹5.3 lakh | 36.9% |
| Bashkir State Medical University | Ufa | ₹5.5 lakh | 27.9% |
At a similar fee, Kazan State Medical, Privolzhsky and Bashkir have each had better FMGE results than SSMU over the last four years, and all three have larger Indian groups. SSMU's reasons to be considered are the dual Russian-English listing on its own site, the Volga location and the lack of a border-region risk. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
SSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. An 18.3% pass rate over 2022–2025 means more than four in five candidates from the university did not pass in those sessions, so plan your FMGE preparation from the middle of the course and allow more than a year between the diploma and the first salary in India.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|

| Official site lists General Medicine with Russian and English as languages of instruction; listed in WDOMS | No official statement that all six years are in English |
| A mid-sized Indian group: 273 graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025 | FMGE 18.3% in 2022–2025, below the Russian average; the rate was 27.4% in 2022 and between 9.7% and 21.1% in the four sessions since |
| Not a border region; large, well-connected Volga city with a working airport | Hostel fee and room details not published; no verified Indian-food information |
| Saratov time is only 1.5 hours behind India | Cold winters; no direct flight from Kerala |

Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MBBS fee at Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky for Indian students?
A Study in Russia portal lists the English-language General Medicine programme at US$5,700, about ₹5.4 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026; an agent lists 432,000 roubles for the first year. The university's own Order No. 489-o of 15 May 2026 sets the 2026-27 fee, but we could not read the amounts, so ask for it in writing. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.
What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky?
The university pages we could read give no hostel fee or room description. One agent snippet mentions about US$360 a year, but the page is unknown, so do not rely on it. Ask the international office for the fee, the room type, security and whether a place is kept for all six years.
What NEET score is required for admission to Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky?
You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: for the 2026 intake that is 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (in 2025 it was 144 and 113; the marks rose in 2026 after the exam was re-held). We found no higher cut-off set by the university; ask whether it holds an entrance test or interview for foreign applicants.
Does MBBS at Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky meet NMC rules and is it taught in English?
The official English page lists "Russian, English" as the language of instruction for General Medicine, and WDOMS lists the same two languages. Neither states that all six years are in English, and India's MEA advisory warns that Russian is often expected from about year 4. The NMC requires the whole course in English, at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same university, so get written confirmation of each point.
Are there students from Kerala at Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky, and is Indian food available in Saratov?
There is no official count of Indian students or of students from Kerala, but 273 SSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, so the Indian group is not small. We have no verified information on Indian groceries or restaurants in Saratov. Ask the university for contacts of current students, and ask us for a Malayalam-speaking counsellor.
