Yaroslavl State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students
Yaroslavl State Medical University (YSMU) is a public medical university founded in 1944 in Yaroslavl, a Golden Ring city 250 km from Moscow, about three hours by train. A university price order gives 350,000 roubles (about ₹4.0 lakh) a year for six years on the track taught through English as an intermediary language. Very few of its graduates have taken FMGE, so there is no pass rate to judge, and the city was hit by drones in 2026.
In short: Yaroslavl State Medical University is a state medical university founded in 1944, 250 km north-east of Moscow. Its price order of 23 May 2025 gives 350,000 roubles (about ₹4.0 lakh) a year, flat for six years (2,100,000 roubles, about ₹24 lakh), for the track "on the intermediary language (English)". Only 19 of its graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025 and 2 passed, too few to judge. The city has had drone attacks in 2026; read the safety section.

Yaroslavl State Medical University, shortened to YSMU and often searched as "Yaroslavl medical university", is a federal state budgetary institution of higher education under the Russian Ministry of Health. It is a public university, not a private college. Russian Wikipedia gives 15 August 1944 as its founding date. It was the Yaroslavl State Medical Institute until 1994, a medical academy from 1994 to 2014 and a university since. The address is Revolutsionnaya St. 5, Yaroslavl 150000, and the website is ysmu.ru.
We found no figure for Indian students at YSMU and no Kerala group. The FMGE tables show why: only 19 YSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, against 1,045 from Ufa and 2,209 from Volgograd. For a student from Kerala this means a small Indian community, and few seniors to ask. It also means less documented evidence of how Indian graduates fare. The university's English-language website was not reachable from our side, so we could not read its English pages.

Yaroslavl State Medical University fees for Indian students
The best source for the Yaroslavl State Medical University fees is the university's order No. 22/03-15 of 23 May 2025, which approves the list of paid services for entrants to the first course in 2025/26. Its Annex 3 covers "training on the intermediary language (English)" for foreign students on specialty 31.05.01 General Medicine. It gives 350,000 roubles for each of the six years, and 2,100,000 roubles for the whole course, as a flat price. At the Central Bank of Russia rate, 350,000 roubles is about ₹4.0 lakh and 2,100,000 roubles is about ₹24 lakh. This is an order for new entrants, so a flat six-year price is a real path, not a list for students already in the course.
Annex 2 of the same order gives the Russian-language General Medicine price for all payers, not split by citizenship: 215,211 roubles a year (about ₹2.4 lakh) and 1,291,266 roubles for six years. The Russian-language line is not what an Indian student needs under the NMC rule on English, but it shows how much the English track costs more.
The order covers 2025/26. A 2026/27 first-course order is listed on the paid-education page of the site, but we could not open the file, so we do not know the 2026/27 price. Ask YSMU for it and for a written statement that the price is fixed for your batch.
YSMU fee structure 2026-27
The block below uses the order's flat 350,000 roubles a year and its six-year total of 2,100,000 roubles. An agent quote of 395,000 roubles circulates online; the order is lower and is the figure to plan with.
| Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year) | INR |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 6 years (university list for this intake) | ₹23.8 lakh |
Other agents quote 350,000 roubles, matching the order, and one agent gives a hostel fee of 100,000 roubles a year (about ₹1.1 lakh). On the order, tuition alone for six years is about ₹24 lakh; add the hostel if it is near the agent figure, plus insurance, food, flights and a reserve of 10–20% for the exchange rate and any change of the price. Use the rouble to INR page for today's rate.
| Cost item | What we know for YSMU |
|---|---|
| Tuition, English track, each year | 350,000 RUB, flat for six years (order of 23 May 2025, Annex 3) |
| Tuition, six years | 2,100,000 RUB, about ₹24 lakh (same order) |
| Tuition, Russian-language track | 215,211 RUB a year (same order, Annex 2) |
| Hostel | 100,000 RUB a year quoted by an agent; no official price found |
| Medical insurance | Compulsory for foreign students; ask whether the university arranges it |
| Food, transport, phone | Not published; ask senior students |
| Flights | Kerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then about three hours by train to Yaroslavl |
The MBBS in Russia fees page ranks universities by tuition. A flat price for six years is unusual and helpful for planning, but it is for the 2025 intake only. Compare with Kerala private-college fees on the Kerala vs Russia page.
Living cost in Yaroslavl
A student's monthly budget in Yaroslavl is made of food (mostly cooked in the hostel), a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing. Yaroslavl has about 577,000 people and is only about three hours from Moscow by train. We have no verified monthly figure and will not guess; the cost of living in Russia page lists what to ask.
Hostel and hostel fees at Yaroslavl State Medical University
We found no official hostel fee or hostel description. One agent quotes 100,000 roubles a year; that figure is unconfirmed and is high for a Russian state hostel, so the real fee may be different. Ask the international office in writing for the fee, room type, number of students per room, kitchens and internet, the deposit and the summer arrangement, and the distance to the teaching hospitals.
For girls, ask how rooms are allocated, who is on duty at the entrance at night, and whether entry is controlled by a card. Ask what the hostel does during a drone alert and where the shelter is.
NEET cut-off and eligibility
YSMU does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score that we could find. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category:
- NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. For NEET-UG 2026 (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026, with the result on 16 July 2026) the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC; in 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English, at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
- Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.
Ask whether YSMU holds an entrance test or interview for foreigners and in which language. There is no published acceptance rate. A student who meets the criteria and applies on time is normally admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later. See the admission page for documents.

Admission process at Yaroslavl State Medical University
Apply and ask for the order
Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the international office, directly or through us. Ask for the 2026/27 fee order for the English track and the language plan.
Admission letter and contract
The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, whether it is fixed for six years, the language of each year, the internship and refund terms.
Invitation and visa
The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.
Travel to Yaroslavl
Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then take the train to Yaroslavl. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.
Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa.
Is Yaroslavl State Medical University taught in English and does it meet NMC rules?
The price order names a track "on the intermediary language (English)". That means English is used as the language of instruction for foreigners, but the order does not say that all six years, including clinical rotations, are in English, and we found no university statement that settles it. One agent says the course is taught in English; that is unverified. The NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 need at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. Ask YSMU in writing for the language of each year and each clinical rotation. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so adverts saying "MCI approved" mean nothing. See NMC rules.
Yaroslavl State Medical University ranking and recognition
Families search for the Yaroslavl State Medical University ranking. We found no ranking of YSMU in the main global tables, so we quote none. We could not check the World Directory of Medical Schools because the directory blocks automated access; look up the listing yourself and keep a screenshot. What an Indian student can measure is the FMGE record, in the next section, which is thin.
Yaroslavl State Medical University FMGE passing percentage
NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. YSMU graduates appear in very small numbers. In 2022, 0 of 5 passed (Russian average 26.0%). In 2023, 1 of 4 passed (25.0%, Russian average 19.4%). In 2024, 1 of 5 passed (20.0% against 29.5%). In June 2025, 0 of 3 passed (18.1% average), and in December 2025, 0 of 2 passed (30.9% average). Together, 2 of 19 candidates passed in 2022–2025, about 11%.
| Session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025 | 2 | 0 | 0.0% |
| June 2025 | 3 | 0 | 0.0% |
| 2024 | 5 | 1 | 20.0% |
| 2023 | 4 | 1 | 25.0% |
| 2022 | 5 | 0 | 0.0% |
| 2021 | 6 | 1 | 16.7% |
| 2020 | 3 | 0 | 0.0% |
With 19 candidates in five sessions the university is not in our ranking, which needs at least 300 candidates. One student moves the percentage by 20 points or more, so neither a good nor a bad judgement is fair. What the numbers do show is that hardly any Indian graduates have come back from Yaroslavl to sit FMGE, and the two passes in four years are not encouraging. Ask YSMU how many Indian students it has graduated, how many sat FMGE, and what preparation help it offers. Compare all universities on the FMGE pass rate page. The old term "MCI passing ratio" means the same exam.
Safety in Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl is about 250 km north-east of Moscow, far from the Ukrainian border, and it is not among the regions named in the Indian Embassy's August 2024 advisory (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk). Day-to-day life is that of a calm historic city. The war has, however, reached it in 2026. In the night of 5–6 August 2026, Governor Mikhail Yevrayev said the region was attacked by Ukrainian drones, the road from Yaroslavl towards Moscow was temporarily closed, and Telegram channels reported explosions and smoke over the city; reports say the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery was the target, which the sources did not confirm independently. Ukrainska Pravda notes an earlier strike on the same refinery on 6 July. We found no report of harm to students.
- Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before applying and before every trip.
- Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its number.
- Ask YSMU what students should do during an alert and where the shelters are.
- Note that the NMC wants the whole course at one university, so changing city mid-course can break eligibility; decide before you start.
- Never accept a job or "contract" offer involving the Russian military.

Life in Yaroslavl for Kerala students
Yaroslavl has 577,279 people (2021 census) and lies on the Volga, in the Golden Ring of old Russian towns north-east of Moscow. The climate is cold. The long-term January mean is about −12 °C (−12.0 °C in the 1961–1990 table; a later table gives −9.4 °C), and the July mean is between 17.9 °C and 20.4 °C depending on the table. Expect snow from November to March and temperatures that fall well below −20 °C in cold weeks. A Kerala student needs a real winter coat, insulated boots and thermal wear from the first October; see the winter packing list.

We found no verified Indian shops, restaurants or Kerala group in Yaroslavl. Do not assume Indian food is on sale; plan to cook in the hostel and bring spices. Ask senior students where rice and lentils are sold, and read Indian food in Russia.
Where YSMU is: distance to Moscow and how to get there from Kerala
Yaroslavl State Medical University is in Yaroslavl, on the Volga in the Golden Ring, about 250 km from Moscow in a straight line. The nearest airport is Tunoshna (Golden Ring Yaroslavl International Airport, IAR), which is operating, but we found no Moscow route, so most travellers go by train: about 3 to 3.5 hours from Moscow, the express about 3 hours. Yaroslavl uses Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.
From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow via Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then the train to Yaroslavl. See the Yaroslavl city page and the universities list.
Scholarships, syllabus and courses
We found no YSMU scholarship that lowers tuition for Indian students. The Russian government gives a limited number of state-funded places to foreigners each year through its quota programme at education-in-russia.com; places in medicine are few. Plan to pay in full; see the scholarship guide.
The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask YSMU for its own curriculum before you sign:
| Years | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery |
| 4–5 | Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry |
| 6 | Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations |
The basic sciences come first and clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so a student must learn Russian in the first two years whatever the language of the lectures. We list only General Medicine because it is the programme we could verify.
YSMU compared with similar universities
The table sets YSMU against three universities with a similar fee. FMGE is the combined 2022–2025 rate from the NBEMS reports.
| University | City | Tuition per year | FMGE 2022–2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaroslavl State Medical University | Yaroslavl | ₹4.0 lakh (2025/26 order, English track) | about 11% (2 of 19, not ranked) |
| Penza State University | Penza | ₹4.4 lakh | 30.2% |
| Belgorod State National Research University | Belgorod | ₹4.6 lakh | 12.1% |
| Dagestan State Medical University | Makhachkala | ₹4.8 lakh (2026/27 order, English track) | 11.7% |
Penza has a far better FMGE record at a slightly higher fee. Belgorod and Dagestan have weaker records and sit in regions with their own safety questions, which the table does not capture. YSMU's strengths are its flat six-year price and its closeness to Moscow; its weakness is how little we know of its graduates. See the full ranking by FMGE results.
After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala
YSMU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India a graduate then needs to:
- Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
- Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.
After registration a graduate can take NEET-PG like any other doctor. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. See after MBBS in Russia and the FMGE exam.
Pros and cons for a student from Kerala
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Official price of about ₹4.0 lakh a year, flat for six years (2025 order) | 2026/27 price not readable; the flat price is for the 2025 intake |
| 250 km from Moscow, about three hours by train | Drone attacks on the region in 2026 |
| Public university founded in 1944 | FMGE record too small to judge: 2 passes in 19 attempts |
| Track named "intermediary language (English)" in the price order | English for all six years not confirmed |
| Calm historic city of 577,000 | No Indian or Kerala community found; January mean about −12 °C |

We found no figure for Indian or Kerala students, and only 19 YSMU graduates sat FMGE in 2022–2025, which points to a small Indian group. We found no verified Indian shop or restaurant in Yaroslavl, so plan to cook in the hostel. Ask us to connect you with current Indian students.
