Astrakhan State Medical University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Astrakhan State Medical University is a state medical university founded in 1918 in Astrakhan, a Volga city near the Caspian Sea. Agents quote about US$4,100 a year (₹3.9 lakh), but the university's price orders could not be read, and its FMGE results are low: 16.7% over 2022–2025 on a small number of candidates. This page gives the fees we can support, the results year by year, the hostel, NEET and the climate.

In short: Astrakhan State Medical University is a state university founded in 1918 in Astrakhan, southern Russia. Its graduates passed FMGE at 16.7% over 2022–2025 (16 of 96 candidates), below the Russian average of about 25%. The university says it teaches in Russian, English and French; whether General Medicine is in English for all six years is not stated, so ask for it in writing.

Astrakhan State Medical University is the main medical school of the Astrakhan region, in the Volga delta where the river meets the Caspian Sea. It began in 1918 as a medical faculty of Astrakhan State University, became Astrakhan State Medical Institute in 1922, was renamed Astrakhan State Medical Academy in 1995 and has been a university since 2014. It is a federal state institution under the Russian Ministry of Health. The address is Bakinskaya Street 121, Astrakhan.

The university's English site says teaching is offered in three languages (Russian, English and French) and that it has a Faculty of Foreign Students. A 2021 page of the university mentions about 2,500 students from near and far abroad. We found no official count of students from India, so we cannot say how large the Indian group is. The university appears in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), where its languages are listed as Russian and English.

Astrakhan State Medical University fees for Indian students

The university sets its fees in roubles and publishes them as price orders on its site. The latest order we could trace by title is No. 205 of 3 April 2025 (prices for 2025/26), with amendments of 15 September, 27 October and 24 November 2025 and 6 February 2026. The files are hosted on a cloud storage link that we could not open, so we could not read a single amount from them. Every figure below therefore comes from agents and must be treated as an estimate.

Astrakhan State Medical University fee structure 2026-27

Tuition, 6 years (agent figure)₹23.4 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

The table above converts one agent figure: US$4,100 a year (an agent table for 2025-26, with an interim 2026-27 figure), which is about ₹3.9 lakh a year and about ₹23 lakh over six years if the fee never changed. Another agent quotes US$3,200 a year, and a third page, which may describe a different Astrakhan institution, quotes 300,000 roubles. The agents do not agree, and none shows a university document. Ask the university for the price order that applies to foreign students on the English track, for the amount in roubles and for whether the fee stays fixed for all six years. Russian state universities often index fees yearly, so keep a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate.

Compare Astrakhan with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. At the agent figure it sits in the lower-middle of our list, but because it is not an official price we do not call it the lowest.

Living cost in Astrakhan

Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Astrakhan is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, study material and winter clothing. Astrakhan, with 475,629 people (2021 census), is a regional city and is cheaper to live in than Moscow, Saint Petersburg or Kazan. We have no verified price list for the city, so ask senior students for their real monthly spend before you fix the family budget.

Hostel and hostel fees

The university's official page lists five dormitories for students. Foreign students are normally placed in shared rooms with common kitchens. The price is not on the page we could read. One agent quotes the hostel at US$1,000 a year (about ₹0.95 lakh), another at US$500, and a third at 70,000 roubles. Ask the international office for the Astrakhan State Medical University hostel fee in writing, whether it is charged per month or per year, and whether it is paid together with tuition.

Families often ask about the girls hostel. We found no statement on it. Ask how rooms are allocated, whether female students are housed together, what security there is at the entrance and how far the hostel is from the teaching buildings and clinics.

NEET cut-off and eligibility

The university does not set a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score that we could find. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

We found no published entrance exam for foreign applicants. Some universities hold an interview or a test in biology and chemistry, so ask. There is no published acceptance rate. Students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted, so the real filter is FMGE six years later, and Astrakhan's FMGE record makes this especially important. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Ranking and recognition

Families search for the Astrakhan State Medical University ranking or its world ranking. We have found no ranking position for it that we can verify, in Russia or globally. Rankings also say little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask the university for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. The university is listed in WDOMS (listing F0001014) with languages Russian and English. Check the entry yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

FMGE passing percentage of Astrakhan State Medical University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. The numbers for Astrakhan are small. In 2022, 3 of 14 candidates passed (21.4%) against a Russian average of 26.0%; in 2023, 2 of 15 (13.3%) against 19.4%; in 2024, 4 of 30 (13.3%) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 4 of 17 passed (23.5%) against 18.1%, the one session above the Russian average, and in December 2025, 3 of 20 (15.0%) against 30.9%. Over 2022–2025 combined, 16 of 96 candidates passed, 16.7% against about 25% for Russia. Astrakhan has fewer than 300 candidates in those four years, so it is not ranked in our ranking.

202214321.4%
202113323.1%

Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

In 2020, none of the 7 candidates passed, and in 2021, 3 of 13. With so few candidates a single year can swing a lot, but the direction is consistent: the university is mostly below the Russian average. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same thing as FMGE. Compare Astrakhan with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page. Because FMGE is a six-year test of Indian-style subjects, a student here should plan self-study with FMGE-style questions from the third year.

Safety in Astrakhan for Indian students

Astrakhan is in southern Russia, about 1,270 km from Moscow in a straight line, near Kazakhstan and Kalmykia. It is not one of the three regions (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk) where the Indian Embassy in Moscow advised in August 2024 that Indians take precautions and relocate temporarily. We found no safety incident at the university or in the city. As for any Russian city, we suggest:

  • Ask about hostel security: guards, entry control and cameras.
  • Keep the Indian Embassy in Moscow in your phone and register with it after arrival.
  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel, and the status of your flight before you leave, because flight restrictions in Russia can change at short notice.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Astrakhan for Kerala students

Astrakhan is a Volga delta city with 475,629 people (2021 census), on the Caspian Depression, and the lowest city in Russia, lying below sea level. Its climate is mild by Russian standards: the long-term averages are −3.6 °C in January and 26.1 °C in July, so the summers are hot and dry, the winters cold but not Siberian. A warm jacket, boots and a hat are needed from the first winter; the heat is a different adjustment for students from humid Kerala.

We found no verified information on Malayali students or on Indian food in Astrakhan. Most Indian students in regional cities cook in the hostel kitchen and bring or order spices. Ask the university how many Indian students study in the English group, and ask us, because we can connect you with families whose children are already in Russia.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight to Astrakhan. Astrakhan time is 1.5 hours behind India. Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no university scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the university for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training involves Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. The programme we can confirm for foreign students is the six-year General Medicine specialist course.

Astrakhan compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting Astrakhan usually compare it with universities at a similar fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Astrakhan State Medical UniversityAstrakhan₹3.9 lakh (agent figure)16.7% (not ranked)
Voronezh State Medical UniversityVoronezh₹4.9 lakh (price list 2026-27, English elements)19.1%
Tver State Medical UniversityTver₹4.9 lakh (2026/27 order)17.2%
Northern State Medical UniversityArkhangelsk₹4.0 lakh (price list 2026-27)22.5%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Astrakhan's figure is an agent quote; the others come from the universities' price lists. Confirm current fees with each university.

At a similar fee, Northern State Medical University has had a better FMGE result than Astrakhan, and Voronezh and Tver, which now cost about ₹1 lakh a year more, are close. None of the three is far ahead, so the decision should rest on the confirmed price, English medium for all six years and the city.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

The university awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. Degree documents are attested through the MEA apostille and, in Kerala, via NORKA Roots.
