Kazan Federal University: MBBS Fees, Hostel, NEET Cut-Off and Admission for Indian Students

Kazan Federal University (KFU) teaches General Medicine in English at its Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology in Kazan. The university's 2026-27 price list gives 653,400 roubles for the first year, about ₹7.4 lakh. Its FMGE results are above the Russian average in every session we have, but the number of candidates is small. KFU is not Kazan State Medical University: they are two different universities.

In short: Kazan Federal University is a public federal university founded in 1804. Its 2026-27 tuition for General Medicine is 653,400 roubles a year (about ₹7.4 lakh), one of the higher fees among Russian state universities. Its graduates passed FMGE above the Russian average in every session since 2022, but only 5 to 24 candidates sat the exam in a session. The university states that General Medicine for foreign citizens is taught in English; get that in writing for all six years.

Kazan Federal University Russia, officially Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University and often written KFU or Kazan Federal Volga University, is a public federal university in the capital of Tatarstan. It was founded in 1804 and was formerly the Kazan Imperial University; Wikipedia also lists the Soviet-era name Vladimir Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University. This is the main thing to understand about KFU: it is a large multi-subject university, not a specialised medical school. MBBS students study at its Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology. The address of the university is Kremlevskaya street 18, Kazan 420008. The Kazan Federal University campus around it is in the centre of the city, and the official website is eng.kpfu.ru for foreign applicants.

For foreign applicants the university lists "31.05.01 General Medicine, taught in English" on its admissions page: full-time, six years, 160 contract places and no budget-funded places. The admission exams are biology and a foreign language (English). Wikipedia gives about 50,200 students for the whole university, without a date. We found no published number of Indian students or of students from Kerala, so ask the university how many Indian students are in each year of the English group.

Kazan Federal University vs Kazan State Medical University

Families often mix these up, because both are in Kazan and both take Indian students. They are different universities with different websites, fees and FMGE records.

When an agent says "Kazan Federal Medical University", "KFU medical college" or "Kazan Federal University medical faculty", check which institution is meant and read the name on the admission letter. For MBBS at KFU it must be Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University. It is also a different institution from the N. E. Bauman Kazan State Academy of Veterinary Medicine, which has no MBBS programme.

Kazan Federal University MBBS fees for Indian students

KFU sets its tuition in roubles. The English-language page of the university with programmes and tuition fees lists General Medicine at 653,400 roubles in the column "Tuition fee for 1 course", which is one academic year. The table is for 2026-2027. The same page also showed an older figure of 468,000 roubles for 2022/2023 in a search excerpt; we did not re-verify it, but it shows how much a Russian fee can change in a few years: the current figure is about 40% higher.

KFU fee structure 2026-27

Tuition, 6 years₹44.4 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

In rupees, the Kazan Federal University MBBS fees in INR come to about ₹7.4 lakh a year in tuition at today's exchange rate. Kazan Federal University fees in rupees for the total MBBS tuition are about ₹44 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. We do not know whether KFU fixes the fee for the whole course, so plan with a reserve of 10–20% for increases and for the rouble-rupee rate: that puts the six-year tuition at roughly ₹48–53 lakh. Ask the university whether the contract fixes the fee in roubles for all six years.

DentistryAlso in the fee table, but English only in years 1–2 and Russian in years 3–5; not an option for an Indian MBBS student

Medical insuranceCompulsory for foreign students; ask whether it is arranged by the university
Food and daily costsDepend on how much you cook; Kazan is less expensive than Moscow
FlightsKerala to Moscow via a Gulf hub or Delhi, then a domestic flight or train to Kazan

The KFU tuition fees for international students are higher than at several other Russian state medical universities. See the MBBS in Russia fees page for the full list. A higher fee does not by itself mean a better education or better FMGE results, so judge it together with the results below.

Living cost in Kazan

Beyond tuition and hostel, a student in Kazan spends on food, a mobile plan and internet, local transport, books and winter clothing in the first year. We have no verified monthly figures, so we give no amount. Ask senior Indian students for their actual monthly spend. It varies mostly with how often you cook in the hostel and how often you eat out.

KFU hostel and hostel fees

KFU has a hostel page on its English site, but the text we could read does not show a price. We cannot tell you the Kazan Federal University hostel fees, and we will not guess. Ask the international office, in writing, for: the monthly or yearly fee, the number of students per room, whether kitchens are shared, the distance from the hostel to the institute, and whether the place is kept for all six years or must be renewed each year.

Many families ask about a girls hostel at KFU. Russian university residences usually have rooms or floors allocated by gender, but the rules differ. Ask how female students are placed, what security there is at the entrance, and what the curfew or visitor rules are. If the hostel is full, ask what help the university gives in finding a private flat and what a flat typically costs.

NEET cut-off and eligibility for KFU

KFU does not publish a NEET cut-off above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot practise in India:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144, 127 and 113 in 2025).
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

The Kazan Federal University entrance exam for MBBS is a test in biology and a foreign language (English), according to the admissions page. We have no published syllabus, format or date, and no acceptance rate. Ask the admissions office whether Indian applicants take it online, in person or are assessed on documents, and what level of biology it expects. Ask KFU for a sample paper. The full eligibility and documents list is on our admission page.

Admission process at Kazan Federal University

  1. Apply online

Apply through the KFU admissions site (admissions.kpfu.ru) or through an agent. Prepare scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card.

  2. Entrance exam and admission letter

Sit the biology and English test if asked. The university then issues an admission letter and a contract. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.

  3. Invitation and visa

The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Kazan

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi, then on to Kazan. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.

Ask for the intake dates and the application deadline of the current year; the invitation and visa take several weeks. The admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.

KFU ranking, world ranking and recognition

Families search for the Kazan Federal University ranking, the Kazan Federal medical university ranking in Russia and the Kazan Federal medical university world ranking. We could not retrieve the QS page for KFU, so we do not quote a rank. Rankings also say little about what matters for an Indian student. Three things matter more:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, in-person clinical training and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask KFU for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. We have not confirmed KFU's WDOMS listing. Check it yourself and note the programme name and the year of the listing.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

On the language, KFU's admissions page marks General Medicine as implemented in English, and it does not carry the caveat that the fee table gives to Dentistry. That is a stronger statement than most universities make. Still, ask for a letter saying that all six years, including hospital rotations, are taught in English, because the NMC counts only English-medium study.

Kazan Federal University FMGE passing percentage

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university. KFU graduates were above the Russian average in all six sessions with KFU candidates. In 2021, all 10 candidates passed against a Russian average of 24.8%. In 2022, 5 of 11 passed (45.5%) against 26.0%; in 2023, 4 of 11 (36.4%) against 19.4%; in 2024, 13 of 19 (68.4%) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 2 of 5 passed (40.0%) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 21 of 24 (87.5%) against 30.9%.

202311436.4%
202211545.5%
20211010100.0%
Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

Read these numbers with care. Between 2022 and 2025 only 70 KFU candidates sat FMGE, so the university does not reach the 300 candidates needed for our ranking and is not ranked. Adding the four years gives 45 passes from 70 candidates, about 64%, but one extra failure or pass moves a session's rate by several points. The results are encouraging, not proof. They also say little about the English group that starts now. The older "MCI passing ratio" means the same thing: FMGE was run for the Medical Council of India before the NMC replaced it. Compare KFU with every other university on the FMGE pass rate page.

Safety in Kazan for Indian students

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, a large city on the Volga about 720 km from Moscow in a straight line. It is not on the list of border or North Caucasus regions for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow issued a precaution advisory in August 2024 (Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk). We know of no published incident report about KFU or its Indian students, and we have not researched city crime statistics, so we cannot call it "safe" or "unsafe". What we suggest for any family:

  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before travel, as Russia is in a war with Ukraine and conditions can change.
  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and keep its numbers in your phone.
  • Ask KFU what security the hostel has: guards, entry control and cameras.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Kazan for Kerala students

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, in the Volga region of Russia. The winter is long and cold, with snow, as in most of central Russia: a proper winter jacket, boots and thermal wear are essential in the first year. Moscow time is two and a half hours behind India, so evening calls home are easy.

Kazan Federal University reviews on agent sites and social media are written to sell, so treat them with care. We found no published number of Indian or Kerala students at KFU, and we found no verified information on Indian food in Kazan, so we cannot tell you what to expect. Before you pay a fee, ask the university or your counsellor to put you in touch with two or three current Indian students from Kerala, and ask them about food, the hostel kitchen, the winter and the language. Students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better in hospitals.

Kazan: 720 km from Moscow in a straight line; local time is 2.5 h behind India.

The Kazan Federal University location is the centre of Kazan, on Kremlevskaya street. The distance from Kazan to Moscow is about 720 km in a straight line; by road or rail it is longer. A domestic flight or a train connects the two cities. Kazan has its own international airport, which is the nearest airport for the university; the exact transfer time from the airport to the hostel depends on which hostel you get, so ask the university.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi, then a domestic flight or a train to Kazan. Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. See the universities page for the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no KFU scholarship that reduces tuition for Indian students, and the English General Medicine programme lists 160 contract places and 0 budget places. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask KFU for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients. The Kazan Federal University courses we can confirm for foreign students are General Medicine and, in the fee table, Dentistry, which is English only in years 1–2. Ask which hospitals the clinical years use, and whether the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology teaches them in English. Other KFU courses are on the university's own website.

KFU compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting KFU usually compare it with other Volga universities and with the other university in Kazan. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Kazan Federal UniversityKazan₹7.4 lakh64.3% (45 of 70, not ranked)
Kazan State Medical UniversityKazan₹5.4 lakh30.5%
Bashkir State Medical UniversityUfa₹5.5 lakh27.9%
Privolzhsky Research Medical UniversityNizhny Novgorod₹5.3 lakh36.9%
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Kazan State Medical University's price page we could read was labelled 2023-24; confirm current fees with each university. The KFU rate is our own sum of the NBEMS figures for a small group.

KFU costs about ₹2 lakh a year more than the other three, which is about ₹12 lakh over six years before any fee rises. Its FMGE rate looks the highest, but it rests on 70 candidates, while the others rest on hundreds. Kazan State Medical, Privolzhsky and Bashkir have long records at a lower fee. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

KFU awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. KFU's results so far are good on paper, but they come from a small group, so prepare for FMGE from the first year like every other student.

Kazan Federal University: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MBBS fee at Kazan Federal University for Indian students?

The university's price list for 2026-27 gives 653,400 roubles a year for General Medicine, about ₹7.4 lakh at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Over six years that is roughly ₹44 lakh in tuition if the fee did not change; fees usually rise, so keep a reserve. Hostel, food, insurance and flights are extra.

What are the hostel facilities and hostel fees at Kazan Federal University?

KFU has a hostel page, but we could not read a price on it, so we cannot quote the hostel fee. Ask the international office in writing for the fee, the room type, the kitchen arrangements and the security, and whether the place is kept for all six years.

What NEET score is required for admission to Kazan Federal University?

You need the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category: in 2026 that was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (144 and 113 in 2025). KFU does not publish a higher cut-off. The admission exams listed for the English programme are biology and English.

Which is better: Kazan Federal University or Kazan State Medical University?

They are different universities. KFU is a large federal university whose medicine is taught at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology; its fee is about ₹7.4 lakh a year against about ₹5.4 lakh at Kazan State Medical University. KFU's FMGE rate is higher but rests on 70 candidates, while Kazan State Medical's combined 30.5% rests on a much larger group. We cannot call one better; compare fee, hostel, English-medium letter and Indian student feedback.

Are there students from Kerala at Kazan Federal University, and is Indian food available in Kazan?

We found no published number of Indian or Kerala students at KFU and no verified information on Indian food in Kazan. Ask the university or your counsellor to connect you with current Indian students before you pay, and ask them about food and the hostel kitchen.
