Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University (Pirogov University, also written RNRMU) is a federal state autonomous institution of higher education and a research university, so it is a public university under the Russian Ministry of Health system. It was founded in 1906. Its older names are the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov and the Russian State Medical University, or RSMU. Many Indian families still search for "RSMU Moscow" or "Pirogov Russian National Medical University"; all of them mean this university, as do "Pirogov Russian NRM University" and "Pirogov Medical University, Moscow, Russia". Nikolai Pirogov, after whom it is named, was a 19th-century Russian surgeon.

The address is Ostrovityanova street 1, building 6, Moscow 117513, in the south-west of the city. The university website is rsmu.ru, and the English site for foreign applicants is pirogov-university.com. We could not reach both sites directly from our side and read them through web archives, so check the fee page again on the live site. The university has not published a count of its Indian students that we could find.

Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University fees for Indian students

The Pirogov University tuition fees are set in roubles and published on the tuition page for foreign applicants (pirogov-university.com/admission/tuition-fees). The 2025-26 table lists 31.05.01 General Medicine twice, once for Russian and once for English as the language of study, both six years, and both at 1,000,000 roubles a year. The same table gives dentistry in English at 1,100,000 roubles and pharmacy in English at 750,000 roubles. The page says that fees for 2026-27 will be published later, and the version we read is an archive snapshot of 12 March 2026. So the 2025-26 figure is the latest we can quote, and the 2026-27 price may be higher.

Pirogov University fee structure 2025-26

Six years at today's fee (fees usually rise each year)INR
Tuition, 6 years₹67.9 lakh
Hostel, 6 years₹2.0 lakh
Tuition and hostel, 6 years₹69.9 lakh
Converted at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 2026-10-15. Food, insurance, visa and flights are extra; see the fees page.

At today's exchange rate 1,000,000 roubles is about ₹11.3 lakh a year, which would be about ₹68 lakh over six years if the fee never rose. That is more than twice the cost of many state universities in the Volga region and the Urals, so for a family it should be compared with the self-financing MBBS seat in Kerala at about ₹8.1 lakh a year, which costs less per year and has no visa, flight or FMGE to pay for. Keep a reserve of 10–20% for fee increases and for the rouble-rupee rate, and ask the admissions office whether the fee in the contract is fixed for all six years.

Compare Pirogov with other universities on the MBBS in Russia fees page. The English fee is at the top end of our list, in the same range as RUDN and below Sechenov. Our guide MBBS fees in Kerala vs Russia sets this against the Kerala fees.

Living cost in Moscow

Beyond tuition and hostel, a student's monthly budget in Moscow is made of food, a mobile plan and internet, a metro pass, study material and winter clothing in the first year. Moscow, with a population of about 13 million, is generally the most expensive student city in Russia. We have no verified monthly figure, so ask senior Indian students at Pirogov for their real monthly spend before fixing the family budget. The hostel at about ₹2,800 a month is cheap compared with renting, which is the main reason to secure a hostel place for all six years.

Hostel and hostel fees at Pirogov University

The accommodation page describes a single high-rise dormitory, with blocks of two rooms for two or three people, at 2,468 roubles a month (about ₹2,800) in the archived snapshot of March 2026; we could not confirm it on the live site. Confirm the current rate, because it can change from year to year. Ask the international office whether a place is given to every foreign first-year student, how far the building is from the teaching hospitals, and whether there is a deposit.

Families often ask about the girls hostel at Pirogov University and its fees. Moscow dormitories are normally mixed buildings with separate blocks or floors and a pass system at the entrance. Ask how female students are placed in the building, who is on duty and what the visiting rules are.

NEET cut-off and eligibility for Pirogov University

We found no NEET cut-off of the university's own above the national qualifying score. What you need is the NEET-UG qualifying score for your category, because without it an Indian graduate cannot sit FMGE:

  • NEET-UG: qualified, result valid for three years. In NEET-UG 2026 the qualifying score was 213 out of 720 for general and EWS, 194 for general PwBD and 177 for SC, ST and OBC (the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and re-held on 21 June 2026; the result came on 16 July 2026). In 2025 it was 144, 127 and 113.
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • Age: 17 by 31 December of the admission year.

Ask the admissions office whether an entrance test or interview is held for foreign applicants and in which subjects. There is no published acceptance rate. In practice, students who meet the criteria and apply on time are usually admitted; the real filter is FMGE six years later. With a fee of this size, the family should also be sure the course will be affordable in year 6, not only in year 1. See the full eligibility and documents list.

Admission process at Pirogov University

  1. Apply online

Send scans of your passport, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and NEET score card to the admissions office, directly or through us. Say that you want General Medicine with English as the language of study.

  2. Admission letter and contract

The university checks the documents and issues an admission letter. Read the contract for the fee, the language of instruction and the internship.

  3. Invitation and visa

The university applies for your study invitation from the Russian migration authorities. With it you apply for the student visa; the nearest Russian consulate to Kerala is in Chennai.

  4. Travel to Moscow

Fly to Moscow through a Gulf hub or Delhi; Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. The university completes your migration registration after arrival.

English-medium groups at Russian universities usually start between September and November. Apply soon after NEET results, because the invitation and visa take several weeks. The general admission process page explains documents, apostille through NORKA Roots and the visa in detail.

Pirogov University ranking and recognition

Families often search for the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University ranking and for the Pirogov Medical University Moscow world ranking. The university's ratings page reports two: QS World University Rankings by Subject – Medicine, position 401–450 in 2026, and the Round University Ranking (RUR), world position 586 and 16th in Russia. These figures are the university's own and we did not check them against the QS and RUR sites, so verify before quoting them. A ranking says little about what matters most for an Indian student. Three things matter more:

  • NMC rules. The degree is valid in India only if the course meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study in English, a 12-month internship at the same university, and eligibility for a licence to practise in Russia. The NMC keeps no list of approved universities, so ask Pirogov University for written confirmation of each point. See NMC rules.
  • World Directory of Medical Schools. We could not check the WDOMS listing, so check it yourself; an Indian graduate needs a degree from a recognised medical school.
  • FMGE results, below, which show how its Indian graduates actually do.

On language: the fee table lists General Medicine in English as a separate six-year programme, so English medium is stated in the university's own table. We found no statement on whether any Russian-language teaching is built into the English track, and the curriculum was not checked. Clinical training in hospitals involves Russian-speaking patients, so ask for the language plan for years 4–6 in writing.

FMGE passing percentage of Pirogov University

NBEMS publishes FMGE results for every foreign university, and Pirogov's record changed a lot. In 2020, 4 of 37 passed (10.8%) and in 2021, 3 of 31 (9.7%). In 2022, none of 16 passed (0.0%) against a Russian average of 26.0%. In 2023, 5 of 26 passed (19.2%) against 19.4%. In 2024, 18 of 43 passed (41.9%) against 29.5%. In June 2025, 5 of 13 passed (38.5%) against 18.1%, and in December 2025, 7 of 17 (41.2%) against 30.9%.

20221600.0%
20213139.7%

Source: NBEMS FMGE reports. Annual figures combine both sessions.

Over 2022–2025 combined, 35 of 115 candidates passed, about 30.4%, above the Russian average of about 25%. Because fewer than 300 candidates appeared in those years, the university is not ranked in our ranking by FMGE results. The last three reports are clearly above the Russian average, but the numbers are small, and the weak years 2020–2022 are part of the history; a rise from small groups may or may not last. The older "MCI passing ratio" is the same exam. Compare every university on the FMGE pass rate page.

Safety in Moscow for Indian students

Moscow is the capital and not a border region. It is not among the regions for which the Indian Embassy in Moscow issued a precaution advisory in August 2024 (Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk), and the Embassy itself is in the city. We found no published report of an incident involving Indian students of Pirogov University. Moscow is a big city: keep your passport copy with you, use official taxi apps, avoid isolated areas at night and stay away from political gatherings. Drone alerts have caused temporary closures of Moscow airports from time to time, so keep a buffer when you book connections.

  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Moscow after arrival and save its emergency numbers.
  • Check the current advisory at mea.gov.in before you travel; it can change.
  • Ask the university about security at the dormitory and the entrance control.
  • Never accept a job or "contract" offer that involves the Russian military.

Life in Moscow for Kerala students

Moscow is the largest city in Europe by population, with about 13 million people (2021 census) and the busiest metro system in Europe according to Wikipedia. A student gets the widest choice of food, shops, hospitals and libraries, and every Indian airline route and the embassy are close. The price is the cost of living, which is the highest in Russia.

The winters are cold but milder than in the Urals or Siberia: the January mean is −6.2 °C and the July mean 19.6 °C by Wikipedia's climate tables. A good winter jacket, boots and thermal wear are still essential from the first year.

Kerala students and Indian food

The university has not published a count of Indian students, and we found no verified number for Kerala students at Pirogov University, so ask the admissions office to connect you with current students. Moscow has several Indian restaurants and groceries, and students from India usually cook in dormitory kitchens as well. We do not have a verified list of shops. Cooking in a group saves money. See our guide to Indian food in Russia.

Pirogov University is in Moscow itself, so there is no distance to Moscow to cover: the campus is in the south-west of the city. Moscow has three airports, Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO), all operating according to Wikipedia. The time zone is Moscow time, 2.5 hours behind India.

From Kerala there is no direct flight to Russia. The usual route is Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode to Moscow through Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Delhi. Aeroflot flies Delhi–Moscow nonstop about daily. Because you land in the same city, there is no second domestic flight. Read more on the universities page and the map of all cities.

Scholarships, syllabus and courses

We found no Pirogov University scholarship that cuts tuition for Indian students as a rule. The Russian government offers a limited number of state-funded places to foreign citizens each year through its quota programme, applied for on the official education-in-russia.com portal; competition is high and places in medicine are few. Indian families should plan to pay the full fee.

The General Medicine syllabus follows the Russian federal standard for specialty 31.05.01. A typical six-year plan looks like this; ask the university for its own curriculum before you sign:

YearsMain subjects
1–2Anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, biology, Latin, Russian language
3Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, propaedeutics of internal diseases, general surgery
4–5Internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediatrics, neurology, infectious diseases, psychiatry
6Clinical rotations in hospitals and the state final examinations

The first years cover the basic sciences, then clinical subjects follow, with hospital practice in the senior years. Clinical training means talking to Russian-speaking patients, so students who learn basic Russian in the first two years cope much better. Besides General Medicine, the fee table lists dentistry and pharmacy in English.

Pirogov University compared with similar universities

Families shortlisting Pirogov usually compare it with other Moscow universities, and with a state university at a much lower fee. The table uses first-year tuition and the combined FMGE pass rate for 2022–2025 from the NBEMS reports.

UniversityCityTuition per yearFMGE 2022–2025
Pirogov Russian National Research Medical UniversityMoscow₹11.3 lakh (2025-26)30.4% (35 of 115), not ranked
RUDN UniversityMoscow₹11.4 lakhNot ranked (fewer than 300 candidates)
Sechenov First Moscow State Medical UniversityMoscow₹14.1 lakhNot ranked (fewer than 300 candidates)
Bashkir State Medical UniversityUfa₹5.5 lakh27.9% (rank 8)
Fees at the Central Bank of Russia rate of 15 October 2026. Confirm current fees with each university.

Pirogov costs about the same as RUDN and ₹2.8 lakh a year less than Sechenov, and its recent FMGE results are higher than Bashkir's, though on far fewer candidates. Bashkir costs half as much. You pay at Pirogov for Moscow, a research university and a QS subject ranking, not for a proven FMGE advantage. See the full ranking by FMGE results.

After graduation: FMGE, internship and registration in Kerala

Pirogov University awards the Russian specialist diploma in General Medicine after six years. To practise in India, a graduate then needs to:

  1. Pass FMGE, held by NBEMS three times a year since 2026 (the NMC plans to replace it with NExT, with no date yet).
  2. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, as the NMC requires for foreign graduates.
  3. Register with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council to practise in Kerala.

After registration, graduates can take NEET-PG for postgraduate seats in India like any other doctor. Practising in Russia is also possible but needs Russian accreditation and fluent Russian. Plan for a year or more between the diploma and the first salary in India. Our after MBBS in Russia guide explains each step.
